"Well, He's No Saint!"

That was the expression my grandmother used in response to odd behaviors of family members that she did not consider appropriate.  While we weren't sure what would constitute a "saint," we were pretty clear when we were outside the bounds of sainthood.  Still, her expression prompted the question: "What exactly is a saint?"

Different religious traditions use the term in different ways.  In the Roman Catholic and Anglican traditions, individuals who have led particularly holy lives attain "sainthood."  Yet the Apostle Paul in Romans 1:7 is clear that we are "called
to be saints."  So, what then is a saint?

My favorite definition of a saint is a person whose life reflects the love of God.  Simply put, a saint is a person whose actions and being shine the love of God into the lives of others.  Being a saint is not about being perfect. It is about being holy.  We are not holy because we never sin.  We are not holy because we are perfect.  We are holy because we are set apart through our baptism to reflect the love of God.  We express this holiness when we allow our lives to be formed in response to God's forgiveness and love.  We live as a holy people when we allow the Spirit of God to work through us to heal the world.

Do you know any saints?  I do!  I can name a long list of people through whom I have experienced the love of God and in whom I have seen God's love shine.  I can even name some saints in this presbytery.

God has blessed all of us with saints who have touched our lives.  The Apostles' Creed speaks of "the communion of saints," calling us to remember all the saints who have touched us.

This coming Sunday is All Saints Sunday.  Liturgically, it is one of the days set aside to honor and celebrate the saints in our lives, the people in whom God's light has shined for us. As the old hymn reminds us:

They lived not only in ages past, there are hundreds of thousands still;

The world is bright with the joyous saints who love to do Jesus' will.

You can meet them in school or in lanes, or at sea.

In church, or in trains or in shops, or at tea*

For the saints of God are just folk like me, And I mean to be one too.

Blessings, all you who are called to saints!

General Presbyter

*Yes, this is a British hymn! :)

Holy Habit: Remembering the Saints

The Hebrew word for "saint" is often translated "faithful."  In Psalm 30 and 149, we read: "Sing to the Lord, O you God's faithful (O you God's saint)."  In preparation for All Saints Sunday, take some time to name the saints/the faithful who have gone before us, even as you give thanks for the saints of today and tomorrow.  Remember, each one of us is called to be a saint in order that God's love might shine through us!

Important Announcement Regarding

IRS Tax-Exempt Status Filing Form 990

From: April Davenport

Sent: Monday, October 28, 2013 3:07 PM

Subject: Federal & State Tax-Exempt Status Issues

In May, the message below was sent to you regarding federal tax-exempt status issues and possible automatic revocation of federal tax-exempt status for failure to file Internal Revenue Service ("IRS") Form 990 (An Annual Information Report).  Since that time, our Office has received a report of a mid council receiving a revocation notice from a state tax authority due to an alleged failure to file a state information report which sounded similar to IRS Form 990.

If your mid council or a church in your mid council receives a letter from the IRS or a state taxing authority referencing possible revocation of exempt status, please do not ignore these letters.  While it may be that no such submission was due, an incorrect coding by a taxing authority could lead to the revocation of tax-exempt status and the necessity to reapply in order to reinstate this necessary status for the furtherance of ministry.

If you receive a letter from the IRS, please retain the letter and contact April or Becky immediately at the numbers listed below.

If you receive a letter from a state taxing authority, please retain the letter and contact a competent attorney in your jurisdiction immediately for assistance. The Office of Legal and Risk Management Services ("Legal Office") of the Presbyterian Mission Agency may be able to provide a referral to an attorney in your jurisdiction if such a referral is needed.  In addition, once legal counsel is secured in your jurisdiction, the Legal Office may be able to provide informational assistance to your attorney.

From Carly Jones, Wooster Westminster

Dear Presbytery/Church friends -

We are looking at developing an emergency preparedness plan for our congregation.  We were advised by the security team at The College of Wooster to look at other churches to see if they were willing to share their plans to help get us started.  If any area churches have information you are willing to share, please contact me at cjones@wooster.edu or Dries Coetzee at acoetzee@wooster.edu.

With thanks,
Carly Jones
