Before Dawn... Time with the Father

A certain unavailability is essential for the spiritual life.

Henri Nouwen

Jesus understood the importance of time alone with the Father. Even if it meant getting up early before dawn, he sought out time with the Father. It didn't matter that the day before was long and hard. Indeed, the intensity of the day underscored his need for time apart. He knew that the Father was his life source and that without him he could do nothing.

The same is true of us. As he was to later tell the disciples, "Abide in me and I in you, for apart from me you can do nothing" (see John 15:4). Communion with God is a prerequisite to kingdom service. It is the place-or rather state of being-that opens us up to the movement of the Spirit in our midst. Communion is a spiritual state that we often resist (for reasons we can't even articulate), yet it is the state we yearn for. And when we enter that state, we know ourselves to be blessed as we simply rest in God.

Without communion there can be no compassion for others. Nor do we truly intercede for those entrusted to our care. We are too preoccupied with ourselves.

Jesus' capacity to be with God deepened his ability to be with us in all our fractured brokenness. In his time apart, he was often present to God on our behalf, listening. It is that same listening that we are called to today that the Spirit might intercede with sighs too deep for words (see Romans 8: 26-27).

Not that we understand this much better than the disciples. When dawn broke, they sought Jesus out, exclaiming when they found him, "Everyone is looking for you" (Mark 1: 37).We too can get so caught up in the busyness of ministry that we forget to be still. We forget that we are to serve in the supply of the Spirit, not our own power. But the time will come when we learn that we cannot sustain the pace we have set for ourselves; that we cannot manage apart from the Source.

Henri Nouwen writes: "A certain unavailability is essential for the spiritual life of the (leader)." It prompts the question: whom would we be if communion with the Father were to shape our understanding of leadership?

Food for the Journey

Psalm 42, As a Deer Longs

Romans 8:18-39, The Spirit Intercedes

Mark 1:35-39, Alone with the Father (or John 15, Abide with me)

Journey Questions

  1. Jesus made time to be with the Father even if it meant getting up before dawn. When do you spend time with the Father?
  2. What practices help you to "abide" with Jesus and commune with the Father?
  3. In what ways do you think that communion with God directs and shapes our intercession for others?
  4. Do you agree or disagree with Nouwen that "a certain unavailability" for spiritual leaders is essential? Why?

Questions for Reflection:

  1. Practically speaking, what must you relinquish in order to enter Christ's rest?
  2. What must you embrace?
  3. Where do you most need Shalom in these days?
  4. How can you position yourself for communion with God?

Journey Practice: Silence & Solitude

This next week, set aside 10 minutes each day to be still.  Be sure to turn off your cell phone, shut down your computer, find a "lonely" place where you won't be interrupted.  If need be, jot down your distractions before you begin.  And then be still and be with God.

Prayer for the Journey

I ask you, Lord Jesus, to develop in me, your lover,

an immeasurable urge toward you,

an affection that is unbounded,

a longing that is unrestrained,

a fervor that throws discretion to the winds!

The more worthwhile our love for you,

all the more pressing does it become.

Reason cannot hold it in check,

fear does not make it tremble,

wise judgment does not temper it.

Richard Rolle

FROM THE CLERK'S DESK                       July 11, 2013

I struggle with my own attachment to "stuff," the material possessions that John and I have accumulated in our years together.  I long for a simpler life, one less cluttered and burdened.  And so I am intrigued by the periodic mailings I receive from Tumbleweed Tiny House Company.  Could we give up our comfortable 3-bedroom house in Minerva for a you-build-it-cottage with a footprint of 261-874 square feet?

This may be a stretch, but I see a similarity between that question and the question many Presbyterians are asking about the revised PCUSA Book of Order.  Can we live without a document that no longer tries to answer or at least provide guidance for every conceivable situation that could come up as we live as God's people in this time?   What are we called to give up, to simplify, to let go of as no longer necessary?

I am grateful that I am serving as the transitional stated clerk of this presbytery.  This one modifying word, transitional, is a continuing reminder to me that I serve on a leadership team that is called to guide this presbytery as we live into the future that God intends for us.  There is great responsibility in the freedom that our Book of Order gives us.  However, I believe that this freedom is also life-giving because it calls us to rethink what "stuff" we have accumulated along the way and have accepted as the Presbyterian way of serving God.

Applications for the 2013 - 2 Cents A Meal Grant from the MVP 2 Cents A Meal Fund will be accepted at the MVP Mission Center through Thursday, August 15, 2013. The application form is available on our website, www.mvpjourney.org (see Forms - Miscellaneous)

Please be sure to fully describe the program(s) for which funding is requested (number of people served, involvement of other faith communities and/or organizations...) with special emphasis on the difference that a 2 Cents A Meal Grant would make (new program start-up, expansion of existing program, leverage of matching funds, etc...).

The application must be signed by the clerk of session and the pastor/moderator of the sponsoring church.

Incomplete applications or those postmarked or received at the Mission Center after August 15, 2013, will not be considered.

Awards will be announced at the MVP stated meeting on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at JIM's Place in New Philadelphia.

These grants are made possible by table offerings at presbytery meetings and gatherings and direct contributions from our congregations and individuals throughout our presbytery, who have discerned a call to respond to the growing number of children and adults in our communities who are hungry because they do not have reliable access to affordable, nutritious food.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In an increasingly conflict-ridden and fragmented world, the God who grants peace and wholeness calls Christians to understand and address the root causes of violence and injustice so that we may share in mending the brokenness that exists in our world.  Peacemaking is the human response to God's gift of peace giving.  The Presbyterian Peacemaking Program invites leaders from our partner churches around the world to share their experiences as peacemakers in their own lands.

Our presbytery has just received preliminary news that our application to host a 2013 International Peacemaker has been honored in the person of the Rev. Wilfred Orr from Newtownbreda, Northern Ireland.  Please consider if you are able to host Rev. Orr for a day or two in early October (4-9).  He is able to speak with churches and community groups, present at a church supper or other evening meeting and participate in worship leadership.  Given the short duration of his stay in the presbytery, we want to ensure that Rev. Orr visits both the north and south parts of MVP.

Churches who wish to host our visitor may contact Rev. Lynn Bozich Shetzer, 330-494-2288, callmeinstead330@yahoo.com or the Presbytery office.

Rev. Wilfred Orr

In 2012, Wilfred was presented with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen's honors list for "Service to Community Relations." Throughout his time in Newtownbreda he has been a leading figure in the Ballynafeigh Clergy Fellowship and has worked tirelessly to promote both stronger ties between churches of all traditions in the district and between those from different cultural, social and political backgrounds. The proactive role played by the Ballynafeigh Clergy Fellowship is viewed as significant in contributing to this district remaining one of the areas in Northern Ireland most balanced between Protestant/Unionist and Catholic/Nationalist populations in spite of the polarizing impact of "The Troubles."
