The Journey Has Begun!
The work at Case has begun! Work that would not be possible without your support! For your prayers, your financial gifts, your willingness to join me on this journey as we learn anew how to serve the needs of our communities; I give you thanks!
As we begin this journey, I thought some background about the field of positive organizational development might be helpful. Many of you will know the name, Peter Drucker. He was truly a visionary in the field of management. In his work, he sought to align strengths in ways that made the system's weaknesses irrelevant.
But, what you may not know is that he was a devout Christian who spent the last years of his life studying the church. He intuitively understood the reality that we have the capacity to do great things. As Jesus said: "Very truly I tell you, all who have faith in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father"(John 14:12). Yet we rarely tap into that power that is ours in and through Christ.
Drucker believed this was due in large part to a failure to lead from our strengths. It was his firm belief that while most people believed they knew their strengths, they were often wrong. And so, one of my first assignments is to develop a portrait of my "Best Self."
This exercise is designed to reveal and inspire leaders regarding competencies, qualities, skills and attitudes that they uniquely bring to their work and organization development. The assignment is one that seeks input from others that helps the leader to create a portrait of their human strengths. To that end, I am asking any of you who feel call to share one to three stories of when you saw me at my best. What was my positive contribution in each story? Should you write, please be sure to provide details so that I can understand context, what happened, and what my positive contribution was. Best-self stories often capture things that people say or do in critical times or everyday routines that make a difference. These stories are often unacknowledged publicly. They might describe a leader's approach to people, challenges, tasks, or context. Please email me your stories by November 12, 2012. In return, I will share the portrait that emerges and resulting action plan.
For those who would like to join me in creating their own "Best Self" portrait, this week's Holy Habit provides the guidelines. Should you have questions or want feedback, please do not hesitate to call or email.
Together in Christ,
Debbie Rundlett,
General Presbyter

Holy Habit: Develop a Portrait of Your Best Self
But earnestly desire the greater gifts. I Corinthians 12:31a
Ask God to place on your heart the names of 15-20 people who know you well. These people should be from a cross-section of your life: family, friends, colleagues, superiors and subordinates at work. They should be people you trust and respect.
Once you have developed the list, then email or write them, asking them to provide you with three stories of when you were at your best in their eyes. The purpose of the stories is to help you think about your interactions with others and to identify those times when you were living from your strengths. In writing, please be sure to provide details so that you can understand the context, what happened, and what your positive contribution was. The intent of best-self stories is to capture what you have said or done in critical times or everyday routines that have made a difference. They might describe your approach to people, challenges, tasks or even a particular congregational context. Be sure to set a deadline for when you need people to respond.
Then, do the same exercise. Ask yourself when you have been at your best. Take the time to journal your response to the above questions.
Once you have heard back from everyone, set aside a time when you can read through the responses. They will likely touch you on a very deep level. After reading through all the stories, begin to look for patterns of recurring behaviors. What were your positive behaviors? What strengths were evidenced? Are the particular themes-underlying truths about your values and beliefs, the essence of who you are at your best-that repeat themselves? From these themes and patterns, you will then develop your "Best Self" portrait.
The next step, of course, is to use your learnings to deepen the quality of your life and service. Ask yourself, how you might more fully live out of your best self-at home, as well as in your ministry and work. Ponder those situations and contexts that allow you to serve most fully from a position of strength. How then might you better manage your weaknesses? From this, commit to at least one way in which you might more fully live out of your strengths in the days, weeks, and months to come. Share this with a trusted friend or colleague. And then, offer it to God in prayer.

Formational Prayer Seminar...How we Can Change!
The Formational Prayer Seminar may appear to be a hefty title, but indeed it is four days of life changing experiences, learning to walk with Jesus and seek and obtain the glory, guidance, and reassurance of the Holy Spirit. In our first seminar, the very necessary process of forgiveness and putting wounds in perspective takes place with self-forgiveness, healing of old wounds, and short and long term hurts begin with one's self and extends to others. It is the beginning of a process and a journey!
Guided, led, and taught by Dr. Terry Wardle of Ashland Theological Seminary, who has a no holds barred, reveal all attitude about his own and shared experiences, we were guided to begin our own search and realities in a program of learning, combined with daily, meaningful worship. There could never be a kinder, more empathetic way through the hand of God!
Attending the second seminar proved to be an even stronger, more involved, self-reflective journey, led by Dr. Wardle, but further enriched by other leaders in their fields of expertise in different learning sessions. We were enriched in our journey, as we walked with Jesus daily, were led by the Holy Spirit, encouraged in daily study, daily prayer, and the use of many recommended resources. A further gift was the connections made with others making the journey, and coming from many different fields of work and areas of the country. We have been encouraged to "tell our story," and to "continue the journey." For those of us in this Presbytery with our theme of "Journeying with Jesus," these experiences are life changing helping us to make changes in our own lives to better help and encourage others to change theirs and continue the walk to enhance our own lives, other lives and the world. I believe for me, these seminars have been not only a large blessing, but a permanent life change in my personal and religious life, providing great direction and joy!

Prayer Requests/Updates
Please pray for Rev. Terry Timson of Roseville Presbyterian Church, for his medical issues.
Please pray for Craig Butler, Transitional Associate for Congregational Ministries at the Presbytery of West Virginia. He has stage one pancreatic cancer and is receiving chemotherapy every Thursday.
An email sent earlier this week from Carol Keil, parish elder of Ashland/Richland parish:
My 88 year old mother took a serious fall on Friday night and is in the ICU at Grant Hospital in Columbus. She has a fractured arm, eye socket, and cheekbone, but the real problem is her head injury. Originally we were told that she has brain damage due to a severe concussion. The second CT scan showed increased bleeding in the left hemisphere of her brain. They suggested immediate neurosurgery to relieve pressure, but warned that she would need to be placed in a nursing home with a ventilator and a feeding tube. We declined, as that is not how Mom would want to live. But, surprisingly, she was better today in spite of no surgery. So please pray for my mom as she continues to be hospitalized, for the wonderful staff at Grant as they care for her, and for my sister and me as we try to make the best decisions for our mother.
If you or someone you know has a prayer request,
