Radical Hospitality
Soon after his testing in the wilderness, Jesus preached in his home synagogue:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor (Luke 4:1-14-30).
At the heart of these words is the call to extend the radical hospitality of God. Jesus both taught and modeled with his life that it is in the space between the stranger and the self that the divine is encountered. As he told his disciples:
When I was thirsty, you gave me water... as you did to the least of these...
Quoting the prophet Isaiah, Jesus proclaims the radical hospitality of God which beckons all the excluded and disabled and powerless with the promise of healing and wholeness: shalom. At first the words seem to welcome Jesus neighbors and the synagogue warms with pleasure. But, with sickening rapidity, it grows cold. Jesus makes clear that he knows that they do not really understand or truly welcome him. In no time at all, the congregation turns into a lynch mob and Jesus narrowly escapes with his life.
Quaker Parker Palmer talks about the problems religious communities have with practicing radical hospitality born of the acceptable time of the Lord:
... if the church is to serve as a school of the spirit,
and as a bridge between the private and public realms,
it must find ways of extending hospitality to the stranger.
I do not mean coffee hours designed to recruit new members for the church, for these are often aimed at making the stranger "one of us."
The essence of hospitality is that we let our differences,
our mutual strangeness, be as they are,
while still acknowledging the unity that lies beneath.
Our unity then is found in Christ. But there is danger here: there will be change. Part of the spiritual practice of radical hospitality is to learn to recognize our internal reactions to people whom we consider "strangers." It is to name our fears of change and make a conscious decision to "let go." To whom do we find it hardest to extend hospitality? What of our past will be the hardest to "let go" that there might be space for "the new" born of God's call? The answers for each of us are probably different.
Radical hospitality is more than giving guests a warm welcome. It is more than growth in membership. It is an ongoing spiritual practice... It is a looking beneath the surface differences between us and engaging with the holiness that is the foundation of every person. Like every spiritual practice it is meant to change us... until we come to bear the image of Christ into the world.
How is God calling you to practice radical hospitality in your life and ministry?

Deborah Rundlett, General Presbyter |
Holy Habit: Radical Hospitality
I was a stranger and you invited me in. -Jesus (Matthew 25:35b)
How is God calling you to practice radical hospitality?
...with Christ The old Reformation hymn asks "O Lord how shall I meet you, how welcome you aright?" Carmelite Reformer and mystic, Teresa of Avila advises us to "settle ourselves in stillness and we will come upon him in ourselves." Perhaps, she had been thinking of the Psalmist charge to "Be still and know that I am God" (46:10). Yet, in truth, how many still moments do we truly have in our lives? Our calendars reflect the craziness of our lives. Perhaps, keeping a year of welcome begins with allowing ourselves time apart with God in Christ, a daily moment of stillness simply to be and delight ourselves in the Lord.
...with One Another Often hospitality is understood to be synonymous with "friendliness." While not mutually exclusive, hospitality calls us to a deeper investment of self than simple friendliness demands. Hospitality calls us to share our stories, with both laughter and tears. Hospitality pulls us into a deeper relationship with God and one another. But how often do we take the time to share our stories with one another? How often do we offer the gift of self made available through attentive listening and unhurried presence? Our stories matter. Our faith lives matter. Let us offer one another the gift of hospitality through the sharing of our respective journeys and hearts' yearnings.
....with the Stranger in our Midst Jesus makes clear that offering hospitality is a moral imperative (see Matthew 25) and that our fears do not excuse us from welcoming the stranger in our midst. It is interesting to note that the word for "stranger" in Greek (xenos), also means "guest" and "host". In fact, the NT word for hospitality (philoxenia) literally translates as "a love of guests or strangers." How might our lives - and that of our churches - change if we dared to greet each person we meet as Christ in the stranger's guise? Scripture is clear: we are to "extend hospitality to strangers" even as we "contribute to the needs of the saints" (Romans 12:13). It has been said that a church which is serious about hospitality is serious about mission. It's as simple as putting food in the eating place, drink in the drinking place, and music in the listening place.

Formational Prayer Seminar Description:
The Institute regularly holds training seminars in Formational Prayer for those men and women engaged in care-giving ministries. This seminar provides the tools for addressing dysfunctional behaviors; teaches steps for dealing with deep wounds; presents information on spirituality and world view as each relates to helping the broken; and demonstrates pathways that help people dismantle destructive false beliefs.
Link to June Formational Prayer Seminar:
http://seminary.ashland.edu/documents/IFC/june6-9-2012_broch.pdf
Explanation of the Formational Prayer Seminar:
June 6-9, 2012 we are holding a Formational Prayer Seminar. At this seminar, participants will receive in-depth instruction on Formational Prayer. The seminar is based on Dr. Terry Wardle's Book Healing Care Healing Pray. Each participant will receive a copy of the book Healing Care Healing Pray as well as a large three-ring note taking manual. You will also receive hands on experience in a small group setting. The groups are comprised of three seminar participants and lead by a caregiver. Caregivers are doctoral students in the Formational Counseling program at ATS. This seminar runs four full days, a total of 30 hours training. Wednesday you start at 8:00 with registration and end at 6:30 in the evening. Of course, you will receive a lunch and dinner break along with a few 15-minute stretch breaks throughout the day. Thursday and Friday the seminar runs from 8:00 to 5:00 and Saturday 8:00 to 4:00 again with lunch and stretch breaks throughout the day.
I have attached endorsements written by a few people who have attended the seminar in the past. They range from a Seminary president, to a professional in the counseling field, doctoral students, pastors, seminar participants, etc. I think this may give you some clarity as well. The cost for the four-day seminar and materials is $475. However, a group rate of $375 is available to groups of three or more participants who register together.
Healing Care Small Group Leaders Training:
Since seminar participants will not be in class on Thursday evening , Dr. Donna Thomas will be presenting an additional training on Dr.
Wardle's "Healing Care Group Material". Dr. Wardle has designed a 16-week small group experience that is now being widely used by caregivers with very positive results. The purpose of this small group curriculum is to offer individuals a safe place to heal from deep wounds, false beliefs, damaged emotions, and dysfunctional behaviors in a confidential small group setting.
Seminar participants are welcome to be a part of this one evening training session. While the normal cost for this training is $250, you are able to attend for the cost of the Small Group Leader's Materials. Which include a Leaders Guide, an instructional CD, copies of Dr. Wardle's books "Wounded" and "Draw Close to the Fire" and a copy of Dr. Thomas' book "The Healing Christ In Community" for $155.00. This Leaders Guide is a 250 pages color manual that provides everything you would need to do Healing Care groups.
If you are interested in registering for the Formational Prayer Seminar and additionally the Healing Care Small Group Leaders Training, please contact me as soon as possible. We will be glad to have you join us.
The Healing Care Leaders training is only available to those who have completed or are in the process of completing the Formational Prayer Seminar.
If you have, any further questions feel free to contact me at any time.
