The Thomas in Us...
Imagination was not Thomas's long suit. He called a spade a spade. He was a realist. He didn't believe in fairy tales, and if anything else came up that he didn't believe in or couldn't understand, his questions could be pretty direct.
Thomas wasn't around at the time, but the rest of them were. They were sitting crowded together in a room with the door locked and the shades drawn, scared sick they'd be the ones to get it next, when suddenly Jesus came in. He wasn't a ghost you could see the wallpaper through, and he wasn't just a figment of their imagination because they were all too busy imagining the horrors that were all too likely in store for themselves to imagine anything much about anybody else. He said shalom and then showed them enough of where the Roman had let him have it to convince them he was as real as they were if not more so. He breathed the Holy Spirit on them and gave them a few instructions to go with it, and then left.
Nobody says where Thomas was at the time... Anyway, when he finally returned his reaction was just about what they might have expected. He said that unless Jesus came back again so he could not only see the named marks for himself but actually touch them, he was afraid that, much as he hated to say so, he simply couldn't believe what they had seen was anything more than the product of wishful thinking or an optical illusion of an unusually vivid kind.
Eight days later, when Jesus did come back, Thomas was there and got his wish. Jesus let him see him and hear him and touch him, and not even Thomas could hold out against evidence like that. He had no questions left to ask and not enough energy left to ask them even if he'd had a couple. All he could say was, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus seemed to consider under the circumstances that was enough.
Then Jesus asked a question of his own. "Have you believed because you have seen me?" he said and then added, addressing himself to all the generations that have come since, "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."
Even though he said the greater blessing is for those who can believe without seeing, it's hard to imagine that there's a believer anywhere who wouldn't have traded places with Thomas, given the chance, and seen that face and heard that voice and touched those hands.

Holy Habit: Witness
The body of Christ is to "rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn" (Romans 12:15). Look back over the past year. Who has rejoiced with you? Who has wept with you? Talk to God about what this meant to you.
What is it like for you to rejoice or weep with another? Find someone to rejoice or weep with you today. |

Formational Prayer Seminar Description:
The Institute regularly holds training seminars in Formational Prayer for those men and women engaged in care-giving ministries. This seminar provides the tools for addressing dysfunctional behaviors; teaches steps for dealing with deep wounds; presents information on spirituality and world view as each relates to helping the broken; and demonstrates pathways that help people dismantle destructive false beliefs.
Link to June Formational Prayer Seminar:
http://seminary.ashland.edu/documents/IFC/june6-9-2012_broch.pdf
Explanation of the Formational Prayer Seminar:
June 6-9, 2012 we are holding a Formational Prayer Seminar. At this seminar, participants will receive in-depth instruction on Formational Prayer. The seminar is based on Dr. Terry Wardle's Book Healing Care Healing Pray. Each participant will receive a copy of the book Healing Care Healing Pray as well as a large three-ring note taking manual. You will also receive hands on experience in a small group setting. The groups are comprised of three seminar participants and lead by a caregiver. Caregivers are doctoral students in the Formational Counseling program at ATS. This seminar runs four full days, a total of 30 hours training. Wednesday you start at 8:00 with registration and end at 6:30 in the evening. Of course, you will receive a lunch and dinner break along with a few 15-minute stretch breaks throughout the day. Thursday and Friday the seminar runs from 8:00 to 5:00 and Saturday 8:00 to 4:00 again with lunch and stretch breaks throughout the day.
I have attached endorsements written by a few people who have attended the seminar in the past. They range from a Seminary president, to a professional in the counseling field, doctoral students, pastors, seminar participants, etc. I think this may give you some clarity as well. The cost for the four-day seminar and materials is $475. However, a group rate of $375 is available to groups of three or more participants who register together.
Healing Care Small Group Leaders Training:
Since seminar participants will not be in class on Thursday evening , Dr. Donna Thomas will be presenting an additional training on Dr.
Wardle's "Healing Care Group Material". Dr. Wardle has designed a 16-week small group experience that is now being widely used by caregivers with very positive results. The purpose of this small group curriculum is to offer individuals a safe place to heal from deep wounds, false beliefs, damaged emotions, and dysfunctional behaviors in a confidential small group setting.
Seminar participants are welcome to be a part of this one evening training session. While the normal cost for this training is $250, you are able to attend for the cost of the Small Group Leader's Materials. Which include a Leaders Guide, an instructional CD, copies of Dr. Wardle's books "Wounded" and "Draw Close to the Fire" and a copy of Dr. Thomas' book "The Healing Christ In Community" for $155.00. This Leaders Guide is a 250 pages color manual that provides everything you would need to do Healing Care groups.
If you are interested in registering for the Formational Prayer Seminar and additionally the Healing Care Small Group Leaders Training, please contact me as soon as possible. We will be glad to have you join us.
The Healing Care Leaders training is only available to those who have completed or are in the process of completing the Formational Prayer Seminar.
If you have, any further questions feel free to contact me at any time.

PDA responding to storms and tornadoes that affected the Midwestern and Southern United States
A powerful storm system spawning multiple tornadoes moved through the Midwest down to the southern parts of the United States from February 28 to March 3, 2012. Hundreds of homes were destroyed or damaged, and at least 50 people died from the storms.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is responding by providing One Great Hour of Sharing funds to several of the affected mid-councils (presbyteries) as they respond within their communities. Several members of the PDA National Response Team (NRT) have been sent to work with the mid-councils in assessing the damage and determining how volunteers may be able to contribute to long-term recovery in the affected communities.
Please stand in the GAP for families and communities impacted by these storms.
Give . Your faithful and generous support of OGHS makes the initial response possible. Designated gifts to DR000015 (Disaster Relief - USA Disasters & Emergencies) will help meet the long-term recovery and rebuilding needs of affected families.
ACT . Contact the PDA Call Center by email or call (866) 732-6121 to let them know of your teams' interest in volunteering to help with recovery and rebuilding efforts. Eden Carroll will take your information and let you know when volunteer opportunities arise.
Pray . Our best response is prayer. Please pray for those in the storm-stricken communities including congregations, families, and those seeking to salvage what little the storms left behind. Also pray for strength for those offering assistance, and for those who will participate in the recovery efforts in the upcoming days and months. |
