The Wilderness Time
So God led the people by the roundabout way in the wilderness. -Deuteronomy 13:18
The roundabout way! We tend to prefer the most direct route, unless we are on enjoying a balmy spring day on a winding country road. Most of the time, we are on a schedule and, as we all know, schedules do not allow for roundabout ways. Yet that seems to be where God often leads us... on a roundabout way into the wilderness.
Whether we like it or not, the wilderness is a place where God likes to take us. It is the place where God helps us to deal with endings that we might be readied for new beginnings, not of our own making, but of God's heart and will. Another term for wilderness is "liminal space." As Ruth Haley Barton writes:
Liminal space, the place of waiting, is a unique spiritual position where human beings hate to be but where the biblical God is always leading them. It is when you have left the tried and true, but have not yet been able to replace it with anything else. It is when you are finally out of the way. It is when you are between your old comfort zone and any possible new answer. If you are not trained in how to hold anxiety, how to live with ambiguity, how to entrust and wait, you will run... anything to flee this terrible cloud of unknowing.
We are in a wilderness time: as a denomination, as a nation, as a world! Be it the national political arena, the world of finance, or the future of the church as we have known it, uncertainty abounds. The tenuousness of it all has led many to look for a quick fix, seeking certainty in any false god that will promise a way out of the desert-even if it means returning to bondage in Egypt. But as anyone who has read the Exodus story knows, there is no going back. There is only going forward, even if in a "roundabout way."
Much as we hate "in-between times", they are crucial to our unlearning the ways that have enslaved us. It is the only way to live forward into God's new. William Bridges in his classic, Managing Transition, talks about the difference between change and transition. Change, he notes, is situational: a baby is born, a beloved family member dies, a friend loses their job, and a colleague gets married. Transition, by contrast, is a process by which people come to terms with change.
All transitions begin with endings. The challenge is learning how to let go of what was. The question is will we hang on to the past or will we make a real ending, thereby opening the way to a new beginning? Letting go must precede taking hold. We must be willing to live in the liminality in-between spaces. And so, we must train ourselves to hold anxiety, to live with ambiguity, to entrust and wait... to enter into the cloud of unknowing. For such is the way to life.
For such a time as this, God has called us. And for such a time as this, we are blessed.

Holy Habit: Living in the In-Between
Take some time to ponder the "wilderness" texts below:
From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by states, as the Lord commanded. Exodus 17:1
Whenever the cloud lifted from over the tent, then the Israelites would set out; and in the place where the cloud settled down, there the Israelites would camp. At the command of the Lord the Israelites would set out and at the command of the Lord they would camp. Numbers 9:17-18
God led you through that great and terrible wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of the hard rock. He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. Deuteronomy 8:15-16
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Matthew 4:1
And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? Matthew 16:26, NLT
Then enter into a place of stillness with God. Take a few moments to breathe deeply and become aware of God's presence within you and all around you. As you inhale, breathe in the life that God is giving you in this moment. As you exhale, release the distractions that keep you from being fully present to God in this moment.
As you feel ready, reflect on your own journey through the lens of the Israelites' exodus from Egypt. What stage most resonates with you:
- the ending, the leaving of Egypt where you have felt enslaved yet safe;
- the wilderness, that place of wandering between two worlds: one dead, the other powerless to yet be born;
- the beginning again, the Promised Land, with its new identity, culture and mission?
Where you are on the journey? Go to that place and listen for what God wants to say to you about your place on the journey.
How is God calling you to hold onto anxiety, to live with ambiguity, to entrust and wait... to dwell in the cloud of unknowing? |
MAUNDY THURSDAY (APRIL 5, 2012) AT 7:00 P.M.
CRESTON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH WELCOMES MESSIANIC RABBI ERIC LAKATOS AS HE WILL TAKE PART IN OUR SERVICE SHARING JESUS IN THE PASSOVER
Messianic Rabbi Eric David Lakatos is the founder of Light to the Nations. He is committed to Messianic Jewish revival, seeing Jewish people discipled as believers in the Messiah; and working to reconcile the Church to its appreciation of its Jewish roots. He also serves as the rabbi of Tikvat Yisrael Messianic Jewish
Synagogue in Lyndhurst, on the east side of Cleveland Ohio. He and his wife Gisela have 5 children and reside in Solon, Ohio.
Prior to his rabbinical career in ministry and his faith, Rabbi Eric was born and raised in a secular Jewish home in Toledo, Ohio. While the family did not discuss their Jewish background, Eric grew up hearing stories from his grandmother, Lucille (Forman) Lakatos, about his Jewish heritage. As Rabbi Eric shares: "Lakatos is a Hungarian ethnic name and it means, "locksmith". My grandfather was born in Budapest. Our Jewish lineage was kept mostly quiet growing up, that is until I came to believe in Yeshua, and then my Jewish heritage took on a whole new meaning for me and my family."
At age 18, Eric was first introduced to the Good News of the Messiah, Jesus and received his faith in Him. Afterwards, he began his biblical studies at Southwestern AG University, and the IAMCS Yeshiva, he also carries a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. In 1997, he became the rabbi of Adat Adonai Messianic Jewish Synagogue in Toledo, Ohio, and was licensed by the International Alliance of Messianic Congregations and Synagogues (IAMCS) and served there for 5 years. He later relocated to Cincinnati, and attended Beth Messiah Messianic Synagogue, and studied under Rabbi Michael Wolf who himself was a disciple of Martin Chernoff, who is considered a Pioneer and founder of Beth Messiah and of the modern Messianic Jewish Movement in America.
In 2008, Rabbi Eric became the leader of Tikvat Yisrael Messianic Synagogue and in 2010, he launched "Light to the Nations" a teaching ministry to all believers sharing the Good News of Messiah, the Jewish Roots of the Faith and the Restoration of Israel.

Formational Prayer Seminar Description:
The Institute regularly holds training seminars in Formational Prayer for those men and women engaged in care-giving ministries. This seminar provides the tools for addressing dysfunctional behaviors; teaches steps for dealing with deep wounds; presents information on spirituality and world view as each relates to helping the broken; and demonstrates pathways that help people dismantle destructive false beliefs.
Link to June Formational Prayer Seminar:

Explanation of the Formational Prayer Seminar:
June 6-9, 2012 we are holding a Formational Prayer Seminar. At this seminar, participants will receive in-depth instruction on Formational Prayer. The seminar is based on Dr. Terry Wardle's Book Healing Care Healing Pray. Each participant will receive a copy of the book Healing Care Healing Pray as well as a large three-ring note taking manual. You will also receive hands on experience in a small group setting. The groups are comprised of three seminar participants and lead by a caregiver. Caregivers are doctoral students in the Formational Counseling program at ATS. This seminar runs four full days, a total of 30 hours training. Wednesday you start at 8:00 with registration and end at 6:30 in the evening. Of course, you will receive a lunch and dinner break along with a few 15-minute stretch breaks throughout the day. Thursday and Friday the seminar runs from 8:00 to 5:00 and Saturday 8:00 to 4:00 again with lunch and stretch breaks throughout the day.
I have attached endorsements written by a few people who have attended the seminar in the past. They range from a Seminary president, to a professional in the counseling field, doctoral students, pastors, seminar participants, etc. I think this may give you some clarity as well. The cost for the four-day seminar and materials is $475. However, a group rate of $375 is available to groups of three or more participants who register together.
Healing Care Small Group Leaders Training:
Since seminar participants will not be in class on Thursday evening , Dr. Donna Thomas will be presenting an additional training on Dr.
Wardle's "Healing Care Group Material". Dr. Wardle has designed a 16-week small group experience that is now being widely used by caregivers with very positive results. The purpose of this small group curriculum is to offer individuals a safe place to heal from deep wounds, false beliefs, damaged emotions, and dysfunctional behaviors in a confidential small group setting.
Seminar participants are welcome to be a part of this one evening training session. While the normal cost for this training is $250, you are able to attend for the cost of the Small Group Leader's Materials. Which include a Leaders Guide, an instructional CD, copies of Dr. Wardle's books "Wounded" and "Draw Close to the Fire" and a copy of Dr. Thomas' book "The Healing Christ In Community" for $155.00. This Leaders Guide is a 250 pages color manual that provides everything you would need to do Healing Care groups.
If you are interested in registering for the Formational Prayer Seminar and additionally the Healing Care Small Group Leaders Training, please contact me as soon as possible. We will be glad to have you join us.
The Healing Care Leaders training is only available to those who have completed or are in the process of completing the Formational Prayer Seminar.
If you have, any further questions feel free to contact me at any time.

PDA responding to storms and tornadoes that affected the Midwestern and Southern United States
A powerful storm system spawning multiple tornadoes moved through the Midwest down to the southern parts of the United States from February 28 to March 3, 2012. Hundreds of homes were destroyed or damaged, and at least 50 people died from the storms.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is responding by providing One Great Hour of Sharing funds to several of the affected mid-councils (presbyteries) as they respond within their communities. Several members of the PDA National Response Team (NRT) have been sent to work with the mid-councils in assessing the damage and determining how volunteers may be able to contribute to long-term recovery in the affected communities.
Please stand in the GAP for families and communities impacted by these storms.
Give . Your faithful and generous support of OGHS makes the initial response possible. Designated gifts to DR000015 (Disaster Relief - USA Disasters & Emergencies) will help meet the long-term recovery and rebuilding needs of affected families.
ACT . Contact the PDA Call Center by email or call (866) 732-6121 to let them know of your teams' interest in volunteering to help with recovery and rebuilding efforts. Eden Carroll will take your information and let you know when volunteer opportunities arise.
Pray . Our best response is prayer. Please pray for those in the storm-stricken communities including congregations, families, and those seeking to salvage what little the storms left behind. Also pray for strength for those offering assistance, and for those who will participate in the recovery efforts in the upcoming days and months. |
