Chaos...

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep,

and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Genesis 1:1-2

I am just back from a gathering of missional EPs. As always, it was helpful to gain perspective by hearing about what is happening in presbyteries across the country from California to Texas to New Mexico to Illinois to Atlanta. Whatever one's region, chaos prevails. Yet the Spirit of God is hovering. Of that, we had no doubt.

Common trends include rapidly decreasing income streams, reduced (and ever reducing) staffs, the growing inability of congregations to afford pastoral leadership. And, yet, even in the midst of this painful reality there is a keen sense that God is at work. After all, chaos is often the context in which God seeks to create.

For Los Ranchos, Open Space has been the means by which the presbytery has moved from regulatory to relational. What is Open Space you ask? It is a context in which networks formed around shared passions can gather to resource, support, and encourage one another. Presbytery meetings now begin with 3-4 hours of Open Space as networks meet, followed by dinner, worship, and then a brief presbytery meeting. It is powerful to note that these networks include not simply (and not even always) pastors and elders, but leaders from congregations, as well as community leaders who are not even Presbyterian. Imagine that!

For Greater Atlanta, coaching cohorts, which function much like our cohorts, has been the means by which congregations have moved from maintenance to mission. There is an infusion of new life and energy over the possibilities. Pastors are skipping presbytery meetings to attend their cohort meetings. Imagine that!

For Mid Kentucky, a desire to redirect mission dollars to the field has resulted in the decision to become "virtual." No longer does the presbytery have an office-after all, the congregations (the people!) are the real presbytery. While there is a small hub at the seminary for the administrative staff, the ministry team is mobile and in the field. Imagine that!

In addition to sharing new forms of being, we also discussed:

        - the recommendations of the Mid Council Commission;

       - development of new funding streams; and

       - models for discipleship.

I pass on two questions for reflection:

  1. How has your congregation shaped your identity in Christ?
  2. What is your congregation's compelling story?

I encourage you at your next session meeting, Lenten luncheon, through your small groups to ponder these two questions. Perhaps some testimony will emerge that needs to be shared in the context of worship. Presbytery also would like to share your story, so please do email your stories (with photos!) to be included in upcoming broadcasts.

The Spirit of God is hovering over the chaos of the present moment. Let us give thanks and praise!

Lenten blessings,

Holy Habit: Crisis

Crisis. Take time here to locate the word in your own experience. What have been the critical times, the decisive or crucial events in your life? What are the turning points that chart your own history? Which of these have you experienced as "crisis"? Spend some time in this recollection.

Choose one of these crises for reflection. Let the experience become concrete again in your memory. Recall its onset, the circumstances, the people, the outcome. Allow yourself some time to do this.

Then reflect on these questions:

  1. How long were you "in crisis," engaged in this experience and its crucial issues?
  2. What did you "lose" in this experience; what did you have to give up or set aside?
  3. What did you "gain" in this critical transition; how were you enriched by the experience of this crisis?

Spend some time in prayer with the Triune God.

So rend your heart, and not your garments; return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness (Joel 2:13).

The words of the prophet Joel surely ring true for us at this time of Holy Lent. In the book, A Calvin Treasury, John Calvin is quoted "The human heart has so many crannies where vanity hides, so many holes where falsehood lurks, and is so decked out with deceiving hypocrisy, that it often dupes itself."

How powerful it would be if we could rend our hearts in the safety of God? What healing we would experience if we could peel back even a corner of our heart and let the hidden places where lies have taken root be exposed to the healing power of the Holy Spirit. How could having the ability to help others receive this healing strengthen our lives and our service in the Lord?

Well, dear friends in Christ, we have that opportunity. On Saturday, March 10, 2012, at 9am, Dr. Terry Wardle will present "An Introduction to Formational Prayer and Spiritual Care Giving" at The Presbyterian Church of Coshocton, Ohio.

Rather than an another event, this 4-hour presentation followed by a spirit-filled time of worship will be the launch point for bringing the ministry of healing to our congregations, communities, and to Muskingum Valley Presbytery.

Spirituality is Foundational to Change. Our culture is not insensitive to spirituality-95% of Americans believe in God. 85% believe prayer holds healing power. 62% belong to a religious organization. 60% believe religion is important.

Don't miss this opportunity to experience the power of God's Healing during this time of Holy Lent! Come and let you and your congregation begin the process of being transformed through God's intimate touch!

Blessings in Christ,

Pastor Rick Hastings

Pastor Diana Circelli

HABITAT CELEBRATION

Sunday, February 12 to celebrate was a big day! About 60 people from Trinity United Methodist Church, Deerfield Presbyterian Church, and McConnelsville Presbyterian Church, and Habitat Board gathered for worship to celebrate the work of Habitat for Humanity in Morgan County.

A combined choir enjoyed singing an anthem under Katie Mansperger's direction. Walt Jones preached and Kelly Hardman explained Habitat's mission. A power point featuring Habitat work and prepared by Cris Reed was shown after the benediction during final meal preparations.

Although none of the three current homeowners were able to join us, we recognized their accomplishments. The families have all had significant personal, educational, and occupational milestones in addition to maintaining their own households.

In a message one of the homeowners expressed her "gratitude to my friends, family, and volunteers. It gives me a great sense of pride and security to be able to raise my children in their own home in my hometown."

Token gifts of gratitude were presented to the six Habitat board members, Kelly Hardman (president), Walt Jones, Ruth Orr, and Bob Montgomery as well as Kathy Mayle, and Dennis who were not able to attend. Kathy presented a certificate of appreciation to the Presbyterian congregations for their ongoing commitment to Habitat with specific mention of the ice cream social fundraisers the last few summers.

During the delicious meal following worship enthusiasm bubbled. Immediately plans began to develop for another combined worship service in the future and more shared mission among the congregations.

As you may know, Morgan County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International whose mission is to eradicate sub-standard housing worldwide. Presbyterians have supported Morgan County Habitat for Humanity since it began in 2004 working to eradicate substandard housing for families in Morgan County.

Construction on houses is done by a dedicated group of local volunteers with the "sweat-equity" help of the local partner families. To be a partner family with Habitat for Humanity, families must have a need for safe housing, they must be willing to partner with the organization which includes working hundreds of hours of sweat equity on their home and other partner family homes, and the family must have the ability to pay back a no-interest mortgage.

(Pictured from left: Bob Montgomery and Ruth Orr; two of the Board members from Habitat for Humanity who are also Presbyterian elders.)

Thank you to everyone who participated!

MAUNDY THURSDAY (APRIL 5, 2012) AT 7:00 P.M.

CRESTON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH WELCOMES MESSIANIC RABBI ERIC LAKATOS AS HE WILL TAKE PART IN OUR SERVICE SHARING JESUS IN THE PASSOVER

Messianic Rabbi Eric David Lakatos is the founder of Light to the Nations.  He is committed to Messianic Jewish revival, seeing Jewish people discipled as believers in the Messiah; and working to reconcile the Church to its appreciation of its Jewish roots. He also serves as the rabbi of Tikvat Yisrael Messianic Jewish

Synagogue in Lyndhurst, on the east side of Cleveland Ohio.  He and his wife Gisela have 5 children and reside in Solon, Ohio.

Prior to his rabbinical career in ministry and his faith, Rabbi Eric was born and raised in a secular Jewish home in Toledo, Ohio. While the family did not discuss their Jewish background, Eric grew up hearing stories from his grandmother, Lucille (Forman) Lakatos, about his Jewish heritage.  As Rabbi Eric shares: "Lakatos is a Hungarian ethnic name and it means, "locksmith". My grandfather was born in Budapest. Our Jewish lineage was kept mostly quiet growing up, that is until I came to believe in Yeshua, and then my Jewish heritage took on a whole new meaning for me and my family."

At age 18, Eric was first introduced to the Good News of the Messiah, Jesus and received his faith in Him.  Afterwards, he began his biblical studies at Southwestern AG University, and the IAMCS Yeshiva, he also carries a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix.  In 1997, he became the rabbi of Adat Adonai Messianic Jewish Synagogue in Toledo, Ohio, and was licensed by the International Alliance of Messianic Congregations and Synagogues (IAMCS) and served there for 5 years.  He later relocated to Cincinnati, and attended Beth Messiah Messianic Synagogue, and studied under Rabbi Michael Wolf who himself was a disciple of Martin Chernoff, who is considered a Pioneer and founder of Beth Messiah and of the modern Messianic Jewish Movement in America.

In 2008, Rabbi Eric became the leader of Tikvat Yisrael Messianic Synagogue and in 2010, he launched "Light to the Nations" a teaching ministry to all believers sharing the Good News of Messiah, the Jewish Roots of the Faith and the Restoration of Israel.

To all executives and stated clerks of mid councils:

A note on behalf of Gradye Parsons: We have received word from Cindy Bolbach, Moderator of the 219th General Assembly (2010), that the pathology report from her recent abdominal surgery indicates a malignancy. Cindy will be following up with an oncologist in the next several days. Let us join in prayer for strength for our Moderator as she continues to heal from surgery and for a successful course of treatment. Well wishes can be sent to Cindy's Facebook page, gamoderator@pcusa.org, or First Presbyterian Church, 601 N. Vermont Street, Arlington, VA 22203.

Formational Prayer Seminar Description:

The Institute regularly holds training seminars in Formational Prayer for those men and women engaged in care-giving ministries. This seminar provides the tools for addressing dysfunctional behaviors; teaches steps for dealing with deep wounds; presents information on spirituality and world view as each relates to helping the broken; and demonstrates pathways that help people dismantle destructive false beliefs.

Link to June Formational Prayer Seminar:

http://seminary.ashland.edu/documents/IFC/june6-9-2012_broch.pdf

Explanation of the Formational Prayer Seminar:

June 6-9, 2012 we are holding a Formational Prayer Seminar.  At this seminar, participants will receive in-depth instruction on Formational Prayer.  The seminar is based on Dr. Terry Wardle's Book Healing Care Healing Pray.  Each participant will receive a copy of the book Healing Care Healing Pray as well as a large three-ring note taking manual. You will also receive hands on experience in a small group setting.  The groups are comprised of three seminar participants and lead by a caregiver.  Caregivers are doctoral students in the Formational Counseling program at ATS.  This seminar runs four full days, a total of 30 hours training.  Wednesday you start at 8:00 with registration and end at 6:30 in the evening. Of course, you will receive a lunch and dinner break along with a few 15-minute stretch breaks throughout the day.  Thursday and Friday the seminar runs from 8:00 to 5:00 and Saturday 8:00 to 4:00 again with lunch and stretch breaks throughout the day.

I have attached endorsements written by a few people who have attended the seminar in the past.  They range from a Seminary president, to a professional in the counseling field, doctoral students, pastors, seminar participants, etc.   I think this may give you some clarity as well. The cost for the four-day seminar and materials is $475. However, a group rate of $375 is available to groups of three or more participants who register together.

Healing Care Small Group Leaders Training:

Since seminar participants will not be in class on Thursday evening , Dr. Donna Thomas will be presenting an additional training on Dr.

Wardle's "Healing Care Group Material".  Dr. Wardle has designed a 16-week small group experience that is now being widely used by caregivers with very positive results.  The purpose of this small group curriculum is to offer individuals a safe place to heal from deep wounds, false beliefs, damaged emotions, and dysfunctional behaviors in a confidential small group setting.

Seminar participants are welcome to be a part of this one evening training session.  While the normal cost for this training is $250, you are able to attend for the cost  of the Small Group Leader's Materials.  Which include a Leaders Guide,  an instructional CD, copies of Dr. Wardle's books "Wounded" and "Draw Close to the Fire" and a copy of Dr. Thomas' book "The Healing Christ In Community"  for $155.00.  This Leaders Guide is a 250 pages color manual that provides everything you would need to do Healing Care groups.

If you are interested in registering for the Formational Prayer Seminar and additionally the Healing Care Small Group Leaders Training, please contact me as soon as possible.  We will be glad to have you join us.

The Healing Care Leaders training is only available to those who have completed or are in the process of completing the Formational Prayer Seminar.

If you have, any further questions feel free to contact me at any time.

Prayer Request:

Please hold Sheila Ellenberger in your prayers, she is currently serving as the Area III chair on COM. Sheila had surgery last Thursday, February 16th to replace both knees. She is now in the hospital rehabilitation therapy unit and will be there until Friday, February 24th. Sheila wanted everyone to know how blessed she is to have so many friends and acquaintances lifting me up in prayer. Just knowing that has made surgery, therapy and recovery much more manageable.

Please hold Joyce and Don Rhamy from the Fredericksburg Church in your prayers.  Joyce has completed loyal service on the MVP Nominating Committee.  Joyce's sister, Lillian Templeton, lives in Washington State and has advanced cancer.  Joyce and Don will be visiting Lillian during the week of the March MVP gathering in Coshocton.
