Creating a more welcoming family room

As the place where most people unwind and relax in the evening, the family room is one of the most important rooms in a home. Often it is next to the kitchen and the space where everyone gathers.

When the family room just doesn't feel right, a designer's fresh perspective can revitalize the room.

A wall of photos helps finish the look

Kathy thought this room felt dark and awkward. So, we selected a lighter paint and added a chandelier where the ceiling fan had been. Then, we added lamps and framed the windows with colorful window treatments.

By taking out the half wall between the kitchen and the family room, we created a more accessible and unified area. Since the fireplace seemed a bit lonely, we added a new surround that made a strong statement and became a focal point for the room.

By adding new sofas, the room also became a nice place for conversation. Instead of lining the walls with furniture, we created a cozy retreat for friends and family.

Designer Secrets

Half walls between a family room and the kitchen were a trend that never made any sense to me. They often become another place for clutter. I prefer dividing a room with furniture, which can be moved as needed.
