UArts Only U.S. School Invited to World-Renowned Paris Summer Dance Program
 
The School of Dance received a prestigious invitation to "Camping 2016," the Centre National de la Danse's international showcase and workshop held in Paris, France, last month. The invitation marks the first time in the history of the workshop that an American school has been selected for this important event. UArts is among 16 of the world's top dance centers to receive the coveted invite and performed a piece by Netta Yerushalmy as part of the showcase on June 25.

Andrea Clearfield

Faculty/Alumni Awarded 2016 Pew Grant, Fellowship

Congratulations to faculty/alumni Andrea Clearfield MM '84 (Piano) and Kyle "JustSole" Clark CERT '06 (Dance), who are among the 2016 Pew Center for Arts & Heritage grant recipients. Clearfield received a $75,000 Pew Fellowship for her work as a composer and Clark was awarded a $60,000 Performance Grant for his project "The Life of a Just Sole." Congratulations also go to MFA in Devised Performance program partner Pig Iron Theatre Company, which was awarded a $300,000 Performance Grant for its new symphonic theater hybrid "A Period of Animate Existence." The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage is a multidisciplinary grant maker and hub for knowledge sharing, dedicated to fostering a vibrant cultural community in Greater Philadelphia.

UArts Students Spruce Up Street Corners with Imaginative Works of Art  
 
Students at the University of the Arts are once again bringing a new vision of public art to the sidewalks of Center City's Washington Square West neighborhood with original illustrations that are transforming the area's unsightly street-corner utility boxes. As part of an independent project that began in 2015, designs were printed on vinyl coverings and are being fitted to 18 new brown boxes, including two in front of Hamilton Hall (pictured above). The installation process began in May in coordination with the Washington Square West Civic Association.

Recent Grad Wins '3x3 Illustration Annual' Merit Award

Congratulations to recent grad Corey Brickley BFA '15 (Illustration), whose piece for Huffington Post Highline on gun control in prisons earned him a prestigious merit award from 3x3 Magazine's Illustration Annual No. 13. The long-form article, titled "The Shooting Gallery: When Correctional Officers Carry Shotguns, the Result is Death and Mayhem," featured seven of Brickley's motion-enabled illustrations.

Students, Recent Grads Win Top Film Festival Honors             
 
Several University of the Arts students and recent graduates received top honors at this year's Rough Cut Film Festival, a showcase for filmmakers under the age of 25 held June 13-20. Chosen by a panel of industry professionals, winners in the university division included Best Animation for "Hanging" by Nick LeDonne '17 (Animation); Best Documentary for "Asphalt Cowboy" by Tyler Larm BFA '16 (Film + Video); Best Narrative and Best Actress for "White/Wash" by Isaiah Freeman BFA '16 (Film + Video); and Best Archival Footage Honorable Mention for "Recollection" by Mary-Olivia Kram BFA '16 (Writing for Film + Television). Larm's work was also nominated for Best Editing, while Freeman's piece earned nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Direction; Kram's film also made the Experimental short list.
 
High school-aged filmmakers competed for best film in narrative, documentary and experimental categories, with first place winners receiving $48,000 scholarships and runners-up receiving $24,000 scholarships to UArts.

2016 'Making It' Alumni Exhibit Accepting Submissions Soon                  
 
"Making It," the annual young alumni exhibition that showcases the work of new graduates from the last 10 years, will begin accepting submissions on July 18. The exhibit will be on display in the Hamilton Hall Galleries September 23 through October 28 during Family Weekend and is part of a year-long series of events celebrating the University's 140th anniversary.
 
This year, the "Making It" jury features distinguished members of the UArts and Philadelphia arts community, including Mark Campbell BFA '74 (Sculpture), dean of the University's College of Art, Media & Design; Jordan Rockford BFA '00 (Photography), a senior lecturer and academic advisor at UArts; 2016 Pew Exhibitions Grant recipient Kelsey Halliday Johnson, curatorial fellow in Photography & New Media at the Michener Art Museum; UArts Alumni Council member Eric Preisendanz BFA '10 (Sculpture); and student juror Alexa Snellbaker '17 (Photography; Fibers & Textile Studies minor).
 
Submissions are open to University of the Arts undergraduate and graduate alumni from the classes of 2006 through 2016. Only artwork created after graduation is eligible for submission. More submission details to come.
