Pulitzer, Tony and Emmy Award-Winning Composer Tom Kitt Headlines UArts' 138th Commencement Ceremony
 
Composer, musical director, conductor, arranger and musician Tom Kitt (left), whose awards include a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and two Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations for the rock musical "Next to Normal," will deliver the keynote address at UArts' 138th Commencement ceremony, taking place on Tuesday, May 10 at the University's Merriam Theater on the Avenue of the Arts. Kitt and longtime UArts Board of Trustees member Ronald J. Naples (2nd left) will both receive an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree. Also in the spotlight will be Silver Star Alumni Award recipients Fredric Snitzer BFA '73 (Sculpture), [3rd left], a Miami-based art gallery owner and Art Basel selection committee member, and UArts Associate Professor Kim Yvonne Bears-Bailey BFA '84 (Ballet) [right], assistant artistic director of innovative dance company PHILADANCO.

Art Unleashed 2016

Art Unleashed 2016 Raises More Than $350,000 for Student Scholarships
 
The University of the Arts' 7th Annual Art Unleashed Exhibition & Sale, which featured one-of-a-kind artwork by UArts students, faculty, alumni and staff, raised more than $350,000 for the Sam S. McKeel Promising Young Artists Scholarship Fund. The University's largest fundraiser kicked off on April 7 with an Opening Night Party -- one of Philadelphia's can't-miss art events -- and continued with a public sale through April 11. Among the more than 600 party guests who packed Hamilton Hall were Art Unleashed Spotlight Artists Piper Shepard BFA '85 (Fibers) and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Crafts Warren Seelig.

Z Big Band Tirfe

'Z' Big Band Named Best in the U.S. by 'DownBeat'; Ensemble's Saxophonist Top Soloist at Jazz Festival 
 
For the second consecutive year, the University of the Arts' "Z" Big Band has been recognized as one of the best in the nation. Led by Assistant Professor Matt Gallagher MM '01 (Jazz Studies), the School of Music band was named the top college large jazz ensemble in the 2016 DownBeat Magazine Student Music Awards, considered the most prestigious awards in jazz education. In addition, junior Henry Tirfe '17 (Saxophone) was named an Outstanding Soloist at the 46th Next Generation Jazz Festival, a prestigious competition presented by the world-renowned Monterey Jazz Festival featuring top college and high school jazz ensembles from across the country. Tirfe performed with the "Z" Big Band, which was named a finalist in the Next Generation's College Big Band Division.

Eileen Neff

Faculty/Alumna Named 2016 Guggenheim Fellow

Alumna and Adjunct Professor Eileen Neff BFA '72 (Painting) has been named a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow in the Photography field of study. Neff was among the 178 Guggenheim Fellows chosen from a group of nearly 3,000 applicants in the Foundation's 92nd competition.

Faculty, Alumnae Among 'Emerging Visual Artist' Fellows, Finalists               
 
Associate Professor and Fibers Coordinator Mi-Kyoung Lee MFA '96 (Book Arts + Printmaking) has been named a 2016 Visual Artist Fellow by the Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA). In addition, Visiting Assistant Professor Julianna Foster MFA '06 (Book Arts + Printmaking) and alumna Andrea Krupp BFA '84 (Printmaking) were among six CFEVA Fellowship finalists.

Shannon Ryan '18

Student, Recent Grad Awarded Society of Illustrators Scholarships                
 
Congratulations to sophomore Shannon Ryan '18 (Illustration) and recent graduate Molly Egan BFA '15 (Illustration), named the "best of the best" in this year's Society of Illustrators' Student Scholarship Competition. Egan's hand-made and painted wooden toys took home a $1,000 scholarship, while Ryan's woodblock print/collage was awarded a $500 prize. Their original artwork will be on display in the 2016 Student Scholarship Exhibit at the Museum of American Illustration in New York from May 10 through June 4, along with 10 other finalists from UArts included in this year's prestigious competition.

Alum's Play Selected for National Playwrights Conference                
 
"The Burdens" by writer and composer Matt Schatz BFA '01 (Writing for Film + Television) is one of eight plays selected from a pool of 1,400 for the 2016 National Playwrights Conference sponsored by the O'Neill Theater Center. A dark family comedy about how technology helps keep us close while still enabling us to keep our distance, "The Burdens" will undergo the O'Neill's signature development process this June, with Pulitzer Prize finalist Stephen Karam ("The Humans," "Sons of the Prophet") participating as writer in residence. Schatz is the winner of a 2012 Kleban Prize in Musical Theatre for "Love Trapezoid."

Alumni Association Hosts Career Panel                 
 
On Sunday, April 3, the Alumni Association -- in collaboration with the Office of Career Services -- hosted an alumni panel for parents of accepted students to learn more about what life is like after UArts. Parents were able to ask many questions of our panelists, who represented a wide range of programs at UArts.
