7th Annual Art Unleashed Exhibition and Sale to Showcase Exceptional Works by UArts Students, Alumni, Faculty and Staff
 
Emerging and established visual artists will be the stars of the show when the University of the Arts hosts its annual Art Unleashed Exhibition & Sale April 7-11 in Hamilton Hall. Celebrating its seventh year, Art Unleashed features the original work of UArts students, faculty, alumni and staff, and is the University's largest fundraiser for student scholarships. The Opening Night Party, which takes place this year on Thursday, April 7, has become one of Philadelphia's can't-miss art events, as it gives more than 700 guests the chance to preview over 1,000 works of art and purchase their favorites before the public show opens on April 8. Highlights include featured work by Spotlight Artists Piper Shepard BFA '85 (Fibers) and Warren Seelig, as well as Charon Kransen Arts/Books, the most specialized resource for books and exhibition catalogs on jewelry, metal and design from around the world. AU Logo 16

National Park Posters Win First Place in 2016 Ely Illustration Awards
 
Senior Natalia Jablonski '16 (Illustration) was named the first-place winner of the 2016 William H. Ely Excellence in Illustration Awards for her Yellowstone, Hawai'i Volcanoes, Katmai and Arches national park posters. Second place honors went to James Firnhaber '16 (Illustration), while Adem Kaan Sarioglu '16 (Illustration) took third place. Honorable mentions were awarded to Olivia Gomez '16 (Illustration), Hannah M. Lloyd '16 (Illustration), Kelly Migliori '16 (Illustration) and Kailey Whitman '16 (Illustration). Winners of this annual juried competition are chosen from among submissions by the entire class of graduating Illustration majors, whose original artwork is displayed in the Ely Senior Illustration Thesis Exhibition.

Alum's MASS MoCA Exhibit Featured in 'The New York Times,' 'Philadelphia Magazine' 
 
"Free Roses," a major solo exhibition by UArts alumnus Alex Da Corte BFA '05 (Printmaking) that is currently on view at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), was featured in the Sunday, March 27 issue of The New York Times and the April 2016 issue of Philadelphia Magazine. Da Corte, who has become "highly sought-after in recent years for a riotous post-post-Pop sensibility," transforms MASS MoCA's galleries into a "ravishing and terrifying" environment of sculpture and video installations.

Artist-in-Residence Awarded Theater Wing Grant, Nominated for Lortel Award              
 
César Alvarez, an artist-in-residence at the Ira Brind School of Theater Arts and artistic director of the Brind School's "Polyphone Festival," was awarded a 2016 American Theatre Wing Jonathan Larson Grant. The New York-based composer, lyricist, performer and writer was also nominated for a 2016 Lucille Lortel Award for music, lyrics and book for the off-Broadway musical "Futurity." The show earned a total of five nominations, including Outstanding Musical. Winners of the 31st Annual Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway will be announced on May 1 during a ceremony at New York University's Skirball Center.

Corzo Center Featured in 'Philadelphia Inquirer'

The University's Corzo Center for the Creative Economy was featured in the Sunday, February 28 issue of The Philadelphia Inquirer in an article titled "Helping 'Creatives' Think Entrepreneurially." "I feel if we can get the creating community to engage in the world, they will become true redefiners of the political and civic space we're in," says UArts Professor Neil Kleinman, director of the Corzo Center (pictured above).
