UArts Alum Is Costume Designer for 'Star Wars'

 
Michael Kaplan BFA '71 (Sculpture), the costume designer for the history-making blockbuster "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," was featured in People, Elle, Vanity Fair, Entertainment Weekly, The Philadelphia Inquirer and other publications in advance of the movie's highly anticipated release. "It's possible that no single person is going to exert more influence over fashion trends in the coming year than Michael Kaplan," says Elle magazine. Kaplan has also designed costumes for the latest "Star Trek" films, as well as for "Blade Runner," "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," "I Am Legend," "Burlesque," "Flashdance" and "Fight Club," among others.

Alumna Nominated for 2 Grammys
 
Blues-pop singer Elle King '12 (Multidisciplinary Fine Arts) has been nominated for two Grammy Awards for her top 10 smash "Ex's and Oh's." The 25-year-old Brooklyn-based alumna, who is the daughter of comedian Rob Schneider and former model London King, co-wrote the hit, which is up for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. The 58th Annual Grammy Awards will air live on February 15 from Los Angeles.

Illustration Alum Named to 'Forbes' 30 Under 30 List     
 
University of the Arts alumnus Daniel Fishel BFA '09 (Illustration) has been named to Forbes magazine's 2016 "30 Under 30: Art & Style" list. The Queens-based illustrator, who created a set of tarot cards for The Portlandia Activity Book and is the artist behind the covers of two of award-winning writer Nick Hornby's books, is included in a group who are "creating and designing the future, from the gallery to the runway." Fishel was also included on Print magazine's 2015 New Visual Artists list as one of "15 brilliant creatives under 30."

NAACP Image Awards
Dance Alumna Nominated for NAACP Image Award
 
Sakina Ibrahim BFA '11 (Dance) has been nominated for a 47th Annual NAACP Image Award in the Outstanding Literary Work - Instructional category for her self-published book Big Words to Little Me: Tips and Advice for the Younger Self, dedicated to helping young girls develop the tools necessary to navigate life's challenges, to build a healthy self-esteem and to lead towards becoming secure, thoughtful, self-loving adults. The Image Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts, as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors. Winners will be announced on February 5, 2016, in Los Angeles.

Save the Date: 7th Annual Art Unleashed Exhibition & Sale           
 
Join us this April for the 7th Annual Art Unleashed Exhibition & Sale, which raises critical scholarship funds for UArts students. Artwork in all media by students, faculty, alumni and staff will be on display and available for purchase, including the work of 2015 Silver Star Outstanding Alumni Award recipient Piper Shepard BFA '85 (Fibers) and Distinguished Visiting Professor Warren Seelig, who are this year's Spotlight artists. Opening Night Party attendees will get a "first look" at the exhibition, enjoy entertainment by College of Performing Arts students, and be treated to great food and drink.

IRA Charitable Rollover Permanently Extended            
 
Congress has passed a federal tax bill titled Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015 (PATH), retroactively reinstating the IRA Charitable Rollover provision for all of 2015 and permanently extending the rollover into the future. This provision allows individuals aged 70½ and older to donate up to $100,000 from their individual retirement accounts (IRAs) to UArts, without having to recognize the transfer as taxable income. To take advantage of this special giving opportunity for the benefit of UArts students and programs, simply instruct your IRA trustee or custodian to transfer your desired gift amount to the University of the Arts. LA Happy Hour

Save the Date: SoCal Alumni Happy Hour
 
The Alumni Association will host a happy hour for its Southern California alumni on Saturday, February 13. The evening will be a wonderful opportunity to mix and mingle with fellow SoCal alumni and meet the University's new president, David Yager, along with UArts faculty and leadership. Tickets are $20 per person and will include appetizers and two drink tickets. Keep an eye out for your invitation!
