3rd Annual Irvin Borowsky Prize in Glass Arts Awarded to Matthew Szösz
The third annual Irvin Borowsky Prize in Glass Arts has been awarded to glass artist Matthew Szösz. The Borowsky Prize is given each year to an artist whose work advances the field of contemporary glass art, and carries with it a $5,000 award and a residency and lectureship at the University. Szösz will present his lecture at UArts on November 12. In addition, for the first time, two Jurors' Awards were given to finalists Charlotte Potter and David King, a lecturer in the University's Glass program. The Irvin Borowsky Prize in Glass Arts is made possible by a substantial gift from the late University of the Arts Trustee Irvin J. Borowsky and his wife, Laurie Wagman, a current trustee.

MBET Program Premieres Laurie Wagman Concert Series
The Music Business, Entrepreneurship + Technology (MBET) program debuted its first installment of the 2015-2016 Laurie Wagman Concert Series on October 15 at Caplan Recital Hall. The inaugural concert featured national touring act Lithuania (Lameo Records), which includes members of Dr. Dog and DRGN KNG, and MBET student band, Mother. The series is a collaboration between UArts Trustee Laurie Wagman and a select group of MBET students, who will work to secure acts, produce, promote and organize each concert as the year goes on. All concerts are open to UArts students, faculty and alumni free of charge.

UArts Plays Lead Role in Craft NOW Philadelphia Celebration
To promote Philadelphia's leadership in the field of craft, the University of the Arts has joined with other leading institutions and artists in the city's craft community on Craft NOW Philadelphia, a series of coordinated events and festivities featuring UArts faculty, students and alumni. Craft NOW will celebrate Philly's rich legacy of craft November 11-15, coinciding with the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Contemporary Craft Show (November 12-15), one of the most influential fine-craft retail shows in the country. Highlights include the UArts Craft + Material Studies Faculty Exhibition, on display November 4-22 in the Hamilton & Arronson Galleries, and CraftNOWCreate, a public celebration being held in the Kimmel Center on Saturday, November 14. UArts will host a glass blowing studio tour, a jewelry demonstration, a tabletop handlooms demonstration and an experimental costume show at the free, family-friendly event.

Corzo Center for the Creative Economy Awarded $15K 'Startup PHL' Grant
The Corzo Center for the Creative Economy at the University of the Arts has been awarded a $15,000 StartUp PHL Call for Ideas Award, given to organizations that provide programs and events to support entrepreneurship in Philadelphia. The grant supports the Center's "Introduction to Entrepreneurship" program that will take place in January 2016 in partnership with the Philadelphia Free Library's Business, Science and Industry Department. The workshop is an interactive, two-week course designed to introduce the principles of entrepreneurship to the creative community. Free for UArts students, alumni, faculty and staff. The deadline to apply is November 20 at 5 p.m.

UArts Partners with Philadelphia Public Schools to Help Talented Young Artists
UArts has partnered with the City of Philadelphia's Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy and the talented students of the School District of Philadelphia's "A+ Art" program to offer scholarships to the University's Pre-College Programs. One student will be chosen from each of the 22 schools that participated in Art in City Hall's "A+ Art" exhibition, with e ight elementary students receiving scholarships to attend UArts' Saturday Arts Lab and 14 high school students selected to participate in the University's Saturday School -- all at no cost. The students will have the opportunity to take classes ranging from painting and drawing to film, photography, jewelry making and more.

Exhibit by Museum Studies Faculty, Alums Nominated for Global Fine Art Award
"Beneath the Surface: Life, Death and Gold in Ancient Panama," a University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology exhibit that was created by several Museum Studies faculty members and alumni, was nominated for a 2015 Global Fine Art Award in the Best Ancient Art Exhibition category. Other nominees in the category included the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Hermitage Museum and the Getty Museum, among others. The project was led by alumna Polly McKenna-Cress MFA '95 (Museum Exhibition Planning + Design), associate professor and director of the MEPD program, and Richard Cress, a master lecturer in the MA in Museum Education program and founding principal of Alusiv, the communication design services firm that designed the exhibition and graphics.

Family + Alumni Weekend
The energy on campus was electric the weekend of October 16-18, as hundreds of family, friends and alumni gathered for UArts' annual Family + Alumni Weekend. Friday evening began with an Alumni Happy Hour at Misconduct Tavern. Saturday featured workshops on dance movement and the University's long history, as well as an Alumni Milestone Brunch, a "Life + Work After UArts" panel, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars induction ceremony, and performances by students in the Schools of Music and Dance. Nearly $60,000 was raised for the Evan Solot Scholarship Fund during an afternoon concert performance and reception honoring the retiring School of Music professor. The evening was capped off with a reception for the "Making It" exhibition, where guests mingled with incoming President David Yager while viewing work by young alumni as well as by students from five Philadelphia art schools in the "Joint" juried exhibit. We're already excited for next year's festivities and hope that you will join us on campus next October!

Upcoming Alumni Events
On Friday evening, November 6, alumni are invited to gather at MiMA in New York City (450 W. 42nd Street) for a happy hour hosted by the Alumni Association and UArts alum Eryc Taylor BFA '95 (Dance), founder and artistic director of Eryc Taylor Dance Company. The gathering will be held in the M1 Lounge of his Manhattan apartment building. We invite you to hang out with fellow NYC alumni and friends of UArts. Registration is $20 per person and includes wine, beer and appetizers. In addition, on Saturday, November 7, alumni are invited to attend a free tour of the Dieu Donne Papermill at 3 p.m.
The Alumni Association also invites you to join incoming President David Yager, alumni and friends of UArts in Florida on Friday, December 4 for a pre-Miami Art Week breakfast hosted by UArts Trustee Brian Effron and his wife, Sherry. This breakfast is being held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Tamara Bistro in Miami Beach's National Hotel (1677 Collins Avenue), near to all major Art Basel art fair exhibition locations.
