Alum/'The Voice' Runner-Up to Open for Maroon 5

 

School of Music alumnus Matt McAndrew BM '13 (Vocal Performance), who was the first runner-up on Season 7 of the NBC hit show "The Voice," will open for Grammy Award-winning super group Maroon 5 at a beach concert in Atlantic City on August 16. Pop sensation Nick Jonas is also on the bill.

UArts Students Help Restore Disabled Woman's Long-Lost Hobby

 

For the first time in 10 years, Glenda Speller will be able to sew again thanks to the "Simple Stitch," a user-specific product created by UArts students Jude Yao Marks '16 (Industrial Design) and Lena Feliciano Hansen '16 (Industrial Design). The project was developed in collaboration with Thomas Jefferson University students and Liberty Resources Inc., a nonprofit that advocates for those living with disabilities. The result, Speller tells the PhillyVoice, "has given me back my life."

An illustration by recent graduate Corey Brickley BFA '15 (Illustration) was featured in The New York Times Sunday Book Review in the June 11 issue. The article is about the Big Brother aspects of the government in Iran and its effects on Iranians.

Hands Up
New Work by Brind School Director Featured in 'Philadelphia Inquirer' 

"Hands Up: 6 Playwrights, 6 Testaments," a series of 10- to 15-minute monologues about the perspectives of the African-American male experience presented by Flashpoint Theatre Company and directed by Ira Brind School of Theater Arts Director Joanna Settle, was featured in the June 15 issue of The Philadelphia Inquirer. The groundbreaking work was also featured in Philadelphia Weekly's "PhillyNow" blog, which says, "'Hands Up' is one of the best things I've ever seen in Philly."

1980 Still Life
Work by 2 Faculty/Alumni Acquired by Philadelphia Museum of Art

Work by faculty members/alumni Laurence Bach BFA '69 (Photography) and Eileen Neff BFA '72 (Painting) was recently acquired by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. "1980 Still Life 01" (left) and "1979 Grid Study 03," two classic silver prints by Bach, were donated to the PMA by photographer, collector and former UArts faculty member Douglas W. Mellor. This acquisition makes four images by the Graphic Design professor now in the museum's permanent collection. Neff's acquired work, titled "Leaf Wall Installation," was featured in her recent solo exhibition "Traveling Into View" at the Bridgette Mayer Gallery in Philadelphia. Neff is an adjunct professor in the Interdisciplinary Fine Arts and MFA in Studio Art programs.

Industrial Design Alum Launches New Stone Watch Collection   
 
Following the success of the Carpenter Collection, the first-ever line of all-wood watches, Lorenzo Buffa BS '12 (Industrial Design) and his Analog Watch Co. have launched the Mason watch, the world's first marble timepiece. Described as a "functional marble sculpture for your wrist," the Mason Collection features a body and face that are precision cut from solid marble. Buffa hopes to repeat the Carpenter Collection's success with a new Kickstarter campaign that runs through July 27.

Submit Your Work to 2015 'Making It' Young Alumni Exhibition    
 
The University of the Arts' Alumni Association is pleased to invite submissions for "Making It: Alumni Works '05 - '15," beginning on Monday, July 20. "Making It" is a juried exhibition of works by recent alumni graduating within the last 10 years. This year, the jury features distinguished members of the Philadelphia arts community including Sara McCorriston BFA '09 (Theater Design + Technology) and Jason Chen BFA '08 (Animation), co-founders of Philadelphia's renowned Paradigm Gallery + Studio. Submissions are open to all University of the Arts undergraduate and graduate alumni from the classes of 2005 through 2015. Only artwork created after graduation is eligible for submission. "Making It" runs October 2-27, 2015, with a reception being held during Family & Alumni Weekend on October 17 at 5 p.m.
