Art Unleashed to Feature 'Neighborhood Appreciation Day,' Faculty/Alumni Book Sale

 

This year's Art Unleashed exhibition and sale will once again feature "Neighborhood Appreciation Day," a free and open-to-the-public event taking place from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 11 at Hamilton Hall (320 S. Broad Street). The "street crew" from exclusive radio sponsor 101.1 More FM will welcome local residents and businesses with music and giveaways, while Godshall's Quality Meats will be giving away samples of its premium turkey bacon. Also on tap for the day is a book sale and signing by noted faculty and alumni authors. All proceeds from books sold benefit student scholarships at UArts.

 

Art Unleashed, the University's largest fundraiser, kicks off on Thursday, April 9 with a gala Preview Party that will feature one-of-a-kind artwork, food and drink, and performances by students in the University's schools of Music and Dance. The public sale runs April 10-14 from noon to 5 p.m. daily.

Society of Illustrators 2015
9 Student Works Chosen in Society of Illustrators' Annual Competition  

Nine works by senior Illustration majors and recent graduates have been accepted into this year's prestigious Society of Illustrators' Student Scholarship Competition. Winning entries include two from Laura Weiszer BFA '14 (Illustration) and one each from Meredith Bentley BFA '14 (Illustration), William Beveridge BFA '14 (Illustration), Molly Egan '15 (Illustration), Aiden Jimeno '15 (Illustration), Rebecca Kirby '15 (Illustration), Anne Meier BFA '14 (Illustration) and Kate O'Hara BFA '14 (Illustration). Their original artwork will be on display in the 2015 Student Scholarship Exhibit at the Museum of American Illustration in New York May 6-30. Congratulations also go to Illustration faculty members Kevin Mercer, John Twingley, James Bennett and Jason Greenberg, who were the students' instructors.

Polyphone rehearsal

'Polyphone' Five-Day Festival of Musicals Gets Rave Reviews
 
The Ira Brind School of Theater Arts is still basking in the success of its recent "Polyphone Festival," which featured five musicals over five days for just five dollars. Pairing UArts students and alumni with local and national theater professionals, including Tony-winning playwright/composer Stew, "Polyphone" brought both new and classic material to the Merriam Theater stage March 24-28. Brind School Director Joanna Settle partnered with New York-based composer, lyricist and performer César Alvarez, the festival's artistic director, to curate this bold series of concert-style performances.

Comic Book Is Top Winner in 2015 Ely Illustration Exhibition Awards
 
Aiden Jimeno '15 (Illustration) was named the first-place winner of the 2015 William H. Ely Excellence in Illustration Awards for his comic book, "Little Brother." Second place honors went to Hyeonjoo Lee '15 (Illustration), while Rebecca Kirby '15 (Illustration) took third. Honorable mentions were awarded to Molly Egan '15 (Illustration), Heather Fisher '15 (Illustration) and Nicole Wheat '15 (Illustration). Winners of this annual juried competition are chosen from among submissions by the entire class of graduating Illustration majors, whose original artwork is displayed in the Ely Senior Illustration Thesis Exhibition.

Work by Jimeno and Egan was also selected for the Society of Illustrators' Student Scholarship Competition (see story above).

Carlos Rios WFTV Alum Is Universal Pictures' Emerging Writers Fellowship Finalist

Carlos Rios BFA '14 (Writing for Film + Television) has been named a finalist for Universal Pictures' Emerging Writers Fellowship, an exciting program that is designed to identify and cultivate new and unique voices with a passion for storytelling. Rios, who submitted two full-length screenplays that included a rewrite of his senior thesis script, will be flown to Los Angeles for a series of interviews at Universal Pictures.

Judith Schaechter

Work by Crafts Professor Acquired by Smithsonian

Adjunct Professor Judith Schaechter is featured on SmithsonianMag.com in an article about the recent acquisition of her stained glass piece "The Birth of Eve" by the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Renwick Gallery, which boasts, "Photographs don't do it justice; this kind of work begs a visit to the gallery for a physical encounter." Schaechter also participated on a panel as part of the James Renwick Alliance Annual Spring Craft Weekend on March 28.

Elizabeth Sokolowski
Head of Music Ed Awarded PMEA Citation of Excellence

Music Education Division Head and Associate Professor Elizabeth Sokolowski received a Citation of Excellence for District 11 (Bucks and Montgomery counties) from the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association ( PMEA) for her work in the field of music education. Awards were handed out on March 28 during the PMEA's annual conference held in Hershey, Pa.

Alumni Association Now Accepting Applications for Alumni Council 2015-2016

The Alumni Association is currently accepting nominations from graduates interested in Alumni Council membership. The Alumni Council plays an active role in the life of UArts by engaging alumni in events, reconnecting alumni to their alma mater, helping students to be successful, and more. The Alumni Council is a partner to the Office of Alumni Relations in its efforts to engage, advance and support UArts by brainstorming and planning networking strategies for all alumni. Nominees must submit a letter of interest as well as a completed application form. You can nominate yourself or nominate a qualified candidate. The deadline is Friday, April 17.
