Vocal Performance Alum Heads to Live Playoffs on 'The Voice'

Continued congratulations go to recent School of Music graduate Matt McAndrew BM '13 (Vocal Performance) [top and right], who is in the Top 20 and headed to the live playoff rounds on NBC singing competition "The Voice." Coach Adam Levine chose the 23 year old as the winner in the knockout rounds for his powerful performance of Train's "Drops of Jupiter" during the show's November 3 episode. McAndrew got three out of the four superstar coaches to turn their chairs during his blind audition on October 6 and won his October 20 battle round with a haunting performance of the Coldplay song "Yellow."

Theater Faculty, Alumni Take Top Honors at 2014 Barrymore Awards

Faculty members and alumni from the  Ira Brind School of Theater Arts were big winners at the 2014 Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, Philadelphia's most prestigious theater honors, held October 27 at the University's Merriam Theater. Among the highlights was 11-time nominee Ben Dibble BFA '00 (Musical Theater) [right], a UArts alumnus and faculty member, taking home his first Barrymore for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Musical.

UArts Hosts Artist Talk, Reception for Borowsky Prize in Glass Arts Winner

Bryan Wilson

Bryan McGovern Wilson, winner of the 2nd annual Irvin Borowsky Prize in Glass Arts, will give an artist talk on November 13 at 5:30pm in CBS Auditorium (320 South Broad Street). The lecture is part of the $5,000 Borowsky Prize, which is given to an artist whose work advances the field of contemporary glass art. Wilson will speak about his studio practice in the context of craft, research and role of the artist as mediator. A reception will follow at 6:30pm. Brind School Director Helms Wilma Theater's Season Opener

 

Joanna Settle Ira Brind School of Theater Arts Director Joanna Settle (right) is directing Gina Gionfriddo's Pulitzer Prize-nominated play "Rapture, Blister, Burn," the opening production for the Wilma Theater's 2014/2015 season. The show, which opened October 8 and was scheduled to close on November 2, has been extended through November 8 due to popular demand. "Rapture, Blister, Burn" features original music by Tony Award-winning composer Stew, as well as recent alumna Campbell Meaghan O'Hare BFA '14 (Acting) and Brind School faculty members Krista Apple-Hodge and Larry Fowler. Tickets are available at the Wilma's Box Office by calling 215-546-7824, visiting wilmatheater.org or going to the theater at 265 South Broad Street in Philadelphia.

Work by Illustration Faculty/Alum Featured in Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

Work by Illustration faculty member/alumnus Dominick Saponaro BFA '98 (Illustration) is featured on the website for the future Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a new project by director George Lucas that is currently in the design phase in Chicago. Saponaro's digital illustration piece titled "Swashbuckle Dom" (right) is included alongside works by Norman Rockwell, Lucasfilm Ltd., Charles Schultz and Pixar Animation.

'NY Times' Says College Grads Want to Live in Philly

An October 20 article in The New York Times cites Philadelphia as one of the top cities where young college graduates are choosing to live. Of the metropolitan areas with the most populous city centers, Philly showed the largest increase of young adults living there, at 78 percent. "They want something exciting, culturally fun, involving a lot of diversity."
