Brind School Students, Faculty, Alumni Dominate List of Barrymore Nominees

 

Ben Dibble '00Students, faculty and alumni from the Ira Brind School of Theater Arts dominated the list of nominees for the 2014 Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, announced recently by Theatre Philadelphia. Winners will be named at a ceremony being held October 27 at the University's Merriam Theater. Nominees include Alex Keiper BFA '07 (Musical Theater), who took home a total of five; faculty member/alum Ben Dibble BFA '00 (Musical Theater) and alumnus Ryan Touhey BFA '09 (Musical Theater), who each earned three; alumnus Michael Doherty BFA '10 (Musical Theater) and faculty members Allen Radway BFA '99 (Theater), Dave Johnson and Rosemarie McKelvey, who are up for two Barrymores each; and junior Aaron Bell '16 (Musical Theater), who earned an Outstanding Ensemble in a Play nod for "Pride & Prejudice."

UArts Launches President's Blog

Sean Buffington headshot 2013 Sean T. Buffington (right), president of the University of the Arts, launched a blog this summer. The new "President's Blog" provides an additional channel for Buffington to communicate with the UArts community and other website visitors. As he notes in the blog's "About" section, "At the University of the Arts, young artists, designers, performers and writers are making art and making a difference - in their art forms and in the world. My blog will shine a light on the work of these outstanding students - and our remarkable faculty and graduates too. I'll also offer my thoughts on arts, culture and the creative economy in Philadelphia and globally."

The 17th annual edition of the Fringe Arts Festival is underway in Philadelphia, and more than two dozen members of the UArts community are either front-and-center or behind the scenes in a wide range of exciting, cutting-edge productions. Among them are alumni Bayla Rubin BFA '09 (Directing, Playwriting & Production), Kate Raines BFA '08 (Acting), Emily Rea BFA '07 (Directing, Playwriting & Production), Felicia Kalani Anderton '15 (Musical Theater), Sam Tower BFA '10 (Acting), Matteo Jones Scammell BFA '11 (Acting), Dejha Ti BFA '08 (Multimedia), Kali Page BFA '14 (Dance), Kelsey Ludwig BFA '14 (Dance), Amanda Kmett'Pendry BFA '13 (Dance), Erin McDowell BFA '14 (Dance), Dare Harlow BFA '13 (Dance), Brian Sanders BFA '92 (Dance) and Gunnar Montana BFA '11 (Dance); and faculty members Aaron Cromie, David O'Connor, Manfred Fischbeck, Jen Childs BFA '90 (Acting), Meredith Glisson and Rosey Hay.

Faculty Member's Work Featured on 'Metalsmith' Mag Cover

Work by Craft & Material Studies faculty member Emily Cobb is featured in the current issue of the Society of North American Goldsmiths' Metalsmith magazine. The publication's "Juried Exhibition in Print: Animal Instincts" issue includes her pieces "Become Undone: The Dove" on the cover (right) and "The Bowed Horse: Untied" inside. This semester, the Philadelphia-based jewelry designer is teaching the collaborative course "Computers for Object Makers" at NextFab, a digital design and fabrication technology lab that has partnered with the University to offer UArts students access to its state-of-the art digital tools, facilities and technical support related to 3D design and output.

100-Year-Old Illustration Alum Mac Conner '37 Has First Solo Exhibit

Mac Conner "Mac Conner: A New York Life" is the first exhibition of more than 70 original hand-painted artworks by illustrator and Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art (now UArts) alumnus McCauley "Mac" Conner BFA '37 (Illustration), one of New York's original "Mad Men." The show runs from September 10, 2014, through January 11, 2015, at the Museum of the City of New York (1220 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street). From the 1940s through the 1960s, Conner's captivating illustrations graced the pages of major magazines, including Cosmopolitan, Redbook and The Saturday Evening Post, helping to create the image of the post-war American woman. Conner, still insightful and witty at 100 years old, is expected to attend the opening of his first solo exhibition scheduled for Wednesday, September 10 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Save the Date: Family and Alumni Weekend

Family & Alumni Weekend

Families of current students and all alumni are invited to attend Family and Alumni Weekend, set for October 17 - 19. Sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and the UArts Alumni Association, this year's program includes an opening reception hosted by President Sean Buffington, the "Making It" exhibition, the Golden Arts Reunion for the Class of 1964, Dining with the Deans, Alumni and Career Panel, Family Movie Night, and multiple shows and exhibitions all across campus. This fun-filled weekend will provide plenty of opportunities to connect with current students and their families, as well as with alumni and faculty.
