ID Alum Turns Senior Thesis Into Business That's Turning Heads

What started as a senior thesis project while Lorenzo Buffa BS '12 (Industrial Design) was an undergrad at UArts has turned into Analog Watch Co., a start-up company that produces watches made of all-natural wood. With the help of a Creative Incubator/Wells Fargo Fellowship Grant from the University's Corzo Center for the Creative Economy and an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign, Analog has just launched its Carpenter Collection (pictured top and right), the first-ever line of gender-neutral wristwatches designed with a truly soft and flexible wooden strap.

 

Buffa and his company have been getting lots of attention from local press outlets, including Philly.com, CBS-3 and the Passyunk Post.

Standing Room Only at Screening, Interview with Design Icon Inge Druckrey

Inge Druckrey

A standing-room-only crowd packed into Connelly Lecture Hall on October 23 for a Graphic Design-hosted screening of "Teaching to See" and an interview with UArts Professor Emerita Inge Druckrey, the renowned designer and educator who is the subject of the documentary by filmmaker Andrei Severny. The short film showcases Druckrey's work and her 40-plus year teaching career. Internationally recognized typeface designer and calligrapher Kris Holmes interviewed Druckrey and Severny following the screening.

Art Ed Professor Wins Prestigious Award   

 
Barbara Suplee

Art & Design Education Professor Barbara Suplee received a 2013 Outstanding Higher Education Art Educator Award from the Pennsylvania Art Education Association (PAEA). The prestigious award was presented during the PAEA's annual conference held October 18 - 20 in Bethlehem, Pa.

 

In 2002, Suplee was awarded the PAEA's Pennsylvania Art Educator of the Year Award. She is also the recipient of a Getty Fellowship from the Getty Center for Education in the Arts, the National Art Education Association's first Beverly Levett Gerber Special Needs Art Educator Lifetime Achievement Award and the University's 2008 Richard C. von Hess Faculty Prize.

Dance Students, Recent Alumni Selected for Innovative Exchange Program
 
Chez Bushwick

The  School of Dance has partnered with nonprofit contemporary dance organization Chez Bushwick as part of a field study exchange program for UArts students and alumni to present their choreography in a two-night performance series hosted at the  Center for Performance Research on November 21 and 22 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Selected students and alumni include Katrina Atkin '13 (Dance), Marc Crousillat '13 (Dance), Ann Marie Gover '13 (Dance), Brendan Hogg '14 (Dance), Amanda Kmett'Pendry '13 (Dance), Kelsey Ludwig '14 (Dance), Chelsea Palombaro '15 (Dance) [pictured right] and Arielle Pina '13 (Dance).

Renowned Illustrator/Alum Receives PA Governor's Award

 

Jerry Pinkney and Gov. Tom Corbett

Renowned illustrator and UArts alumnus Jerry Pinkney DIPL '60 (Advertising Design) can add yet another award to his collection: the prestigious Pennsylvania Governor's Award for the Arts, which honors outstanding Pennsylvania artists, arts organizations and patrons. The Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator and Philadelphia native received the Distinguished Arts Award from Governor Tom Corbett at a public ceremony held October 22 at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg.

UArts Students Perform at Center City Philly Street Festival

Fall Festival

As part of the 8th annual Midtown Village Fall Festival held October 6, the University of the Arts hosted a stage on the corner of Broad and Chestnut Streets featuring various performances by students and recent alumni from the College of Performing Arts. School of Music performances included the Rumble bucket-drum ensemble (right), the Rick Kerber Tribute Band and the "Z" Big Band, as well as a variety of other music ensembles. The Ira Brind School of Theater Arts presented two showcases, while dancers from the School of Dance performed a piece titled "Xhibition."
