Longtime UArts Trustee Jill Felix Colton Passes Away

Jill Felix Colton
Longtime Board of Trustees member Jill Felix Colton (right) passed away on Monday, September 16, 2013, at the age of 69. A trustee since 2002, Jill brought passion and a dynamic presence to the Board. She was always willing to share her time and good counsel generously, and her commitment to UArts students and to the mission of the University was inspiring. She will be deeply missed. Her family has established the Jill Felix Colton Memorial Scholarship to honor her long service as a trustee and her contributions to Philadelphia and its creative community.

ID Faculty Member/Alum Wins Core77 Design Award


Laundry Punch Bag

The Laundry Punch Bag, a three-in-one hamper, workout and transporter created by Industrial Design alumnus and Master Lecturer Jason Lempieri MID '04 (Industrial Design), was recently named a Professional Notable winner in the prestigious Core77 Design Awards in the Soft Goods category. Lempieri's clever product, produced by British retailer  SuckUK LTD, has been featured on the "Today Show," on numerous design blogs and is available online at Urban Outfitters.

Visiting Writers Series Launches with Reading by Joyce Carol Oates

The University of the Arts' new Visiting Writers Series, created in connection with the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program, launched on September 24 with a reading, Q&A session and book signing by National Book Award winner and bestselling author Joyce Carol Oates (right). "It was an incredibly exciting beginning to our new Visiting Writers Series," said Creative Writing Program Director Elise Juska. The inaugural event was co-sponsored by The American Poetry Review.

School of Music Lecturer/Alum Is 'Classroom Hero'

School of Music alumnus and Senior Lecturer Jason Chuong BM '08 (Percussion), MAT '09 (Music Education) is one of 50 teachers profiled in American Teacher: Heroes in the Classroom, a new book set for release on October 12. Chuong, who teaches in the University's MAT in Music Education program, is also a full-time itinerant instrumental music teacher for the School District of Philadelphia, where he teaches grades 3-12 in some of the city's most challenging neighborhoods.

Photo Senior Interns at New York Fashion Week

 

Fashion Week

Morgan Beye '14 (Photography) spent the beginning of September in New York City shooting runway shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the fashion industry's premier event. Beye, who is the UArts chapter president of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, interned for Schiffer Publishing where she was hired to photograph collections by top designers to be published in the forthcoming SFP Lookbook: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2014 Collections.

Short Lensed by Film Alum Wins Ron Howard-Judged Contest

Andrew Wheeler
Congratulations to Andrew Wheeler BFA '01 (Film) [right], who served as cinematographer for the short film "Here and Now," named one of five winners in Canon's Project Imaginat10n Film Contest. The user-generated contest, designed to inspire short films based on crowd-sourced photos, was featured in the September 19 issue of Variety. "Here and Now" marks Wheeler's second highly successful collaboration with director Julian Higgins; the pair's American Film Institute graduate thesis film "Thief" won a Student Academy Award and a Student Emmy.

Highlights of this year's Family and Alumni Weekend include a reception for the "Making IT" exhibition that features work by recent alumni, the Golden Arts Reunion honoring the 50th reunion of the Class of 1963 and a Retirement Celebration Luncheon honoring long-time School of Music faculty member Dr. Donald Chittum. The weekend showcases the many talents of the UArts community and provides plenty of opportunities to connect with current students and their families, as well as with alumni and faculty.
