October 2012
Greetings!,

I never cease to be amazed by the vibrant partnerships The People's Health Clinic has formed with other phenomenal non-profit organizations.    Because  October is Breast Cancer Awareness month,  I am reminded of how fortunate the Clinic is to have the opportunity to work closely with both the Utah Affiliate of  Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Playing for Life Foundation (read on).

And during Domestic Violence Awareness Month we are honored to participate in the Candlelight Vigil with another great partner, Peace House,  and to have the great fortune to learn from professionals like Dr. Kathy Franchek, whose work is described at right.

We thank all our partners for helping make our work possible!

Witnessing Domestic Violence Impacts Children's Health

A child with asthma is brought to the ER time after time, despite seeming to take his medication faithfully. When the puzzled doctor asks him if anything happens just before these attacks, he confides that he has seen his dad hit his mom. Dr. Kathy Franchek-Roa, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, tells this story when training medical students and residents at the University of Utah. "Intimate partner violence," she says, "is a pediatric issue."

Of course we are concerned for children's safety and mental health in a home where there is spousal abuse (now more accurately called "Intimate Partner Violence"). What is less universally understood is that a child's physical health - chronic disease, attention deficit disorder or sleep problems, for example - can be made worse by exposure to intimate partner violence/abuse.   In a yet-to-be-published study of children at Utah shelters, (read more here)
