Assalamu Alaikum

Dear Family & Friends of ICSC,

At the Islamic Center of Southern California, we strive to bring Islamic principles to life through our programs and events. We realize that many people today face a tradeoff between spending time with family or socializing. We hope that our newest program, Muslim Family Night, makes it a little easier to stay connected with your friends and loved ones at the Islamic Center. Family Night was established to give our entire community an opportunity to meet casually for an evening of food, prayer, fun/games, and socializing. Join us tonight, Mar. 17, from 6 - 9:30 p.m. at New Horizon School in Pasadena. It is free to participate and all are welcome!

If you'd prefer to stay in Koreatown tonight, make sure to join us for "8 Weeks of Shabbat" with Rabbi Susan Goldberg at Wilshire Boulevard Temple. This event will take place at a different temple/synagogue every Friday leading up to Passover. It is an effort to get to know our Jewish neighbors and stand in solidarity to denounce the recent anti-Semitic rhetoric and hate crimes targeting Jewish Centers and Cemeteries across the country. If you'd like to join us tonight, please register here. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and services start at 7:30 p.m.

Last but not least, our MYG will be meeting twice this weekend for a special tribute to Malcom X! On Saturday evening, at 5:30 p.m., the youth will hold MYG Movie Night with a screening of "Malcom X," featuring Denzel Washington. They will be selling raffle tickets ($1/each) for a chance to win a copy of "The Autobiography of Malcom X!" They'll continue the conversation on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. when Ilyasah Shabazz discusses Malcom's teachings to young Muslim men regarding character, behavior, attitude, and treatment of women.

PLEASE NOTE: The L.A. Marathon will be taking place this Sunday. Click here for a course map to help avoid street closures on your way to the Center. We look forward to seeing you and your loved ones this weekend!

In peace,
Islamic Center of Southern California

P.S. STAY INFORMED.  Please forward this newsletter to your friends so they can join our mailing list.

Community Corner
More than 120 people, including kids and adults, joined us last Friday at our first ICSC Family Movie Night for a screening of Disney's "The Jungle Book." Smiles filled the faces of children and adults alike as they adventured through the world of Mowgli and Baloo here in the comfort of the Islamic Center.

"I wanted to go get popcorn, but I was having so much fun and I didn't want to miss any of the movie"

After transforming the Lecture Hall into a theater for the night, moviegoers stopped at a concession stand in the lobby to grab a free bag of popcorn or purchase a tray of nachos as they entered the movie. Easy for some, others were torn and had to put a little more thought into it, "I wanted to go get popcorn, but I was having so much fun and I didn't want to miss any of the movie," said Wafaa M. (JYG Member), "when I did, I had to get up and rush to go quick!"

For those who weren't in the mood to stay seated, we had games of table tennis going on in the social hall. After much back and forth, Sheikh Asim Buyuksoy was the winner of the evening.

Look for another Family Movie Night in the weeks to come! It is one of our new, recurring programs here at the Islamic Center and will be held one Friday each month.  Have movie recommendations? Email [email protected].

Prayer Timesprayers
We are open for prayers five times a day, every day. The iqama (announcement for prayer) is ten minutes after the Call to Prayer (athan). You can find prayer times on our website.
