Assalamu Alaikum

Dear Family & Friends of ICSC,

We pray that you and your loved ones are enjoying your first week of Ramadan. Insha'Allah, you have had an opportunity to come break your fasts and pray taraweeh with us here at the center. This Saturday, we will have Spiritual Night until fajr. Please join us.

Thank you to those of you who supported us in our annual Pre-Ramadan fundraiser. Because of you, we were able to raise $85,000 to help fund our Ramadan Program, subhan'Allah.

In peace,

Islamic Center of Southern California

Ramadan Reflections:ramadan
"A Night to Welcome Ramadan"
by Marwa Abdelghani (Young Leader at ICSC)
On June 4, 250 community members enjoyed a final feast at the Islamic Center of Southern California before the onset of the 30-day fast from sunrise to sunset in the holy month of Ramadan. At its annual Pre-Ramadan Fundraising Banquet, several speakers took to the stage to address the attendees about Ramadan and community. Omar Badr, the Muslim Youth Group's two-time president, spoke about why he thinks the youth of today are meant to serve humanity and be ambassadors of Islam. Hedab Tarifi, the Center's first ever female chairperson, spoke to the crowd about several milestones of the mosque, including its commitment to helping improve the MYG and its new interfaith council. Levent Akbarut, a longtime member of our community and a friend of Muhammad Ali, gave a special tribute to Ali and the kind of person he was towards others.

Dr. Laila Al-Marayati, founder and president of Kinder USA, was the keynote speaker. She spoke about Ramadan as an opportunity to become conscious of God.

"The road to spirituality is individualism," said Dr. Al-Marayati. "One route that works for one person may have the opposite effect on another."

Thank you to everyone who attended on Saturday. The Center was able to raise $85,000 that night thanks to all of our community's support. Read more about the evening here.

*Our Ramadan Programs are a cornerstone of our holy month. Iftar will be served every night during the first week of Ramadan and Fridays through Sundays during the remaining weeks. Insha'Allah, we can raise funds to cover Monday through Thursday nights as well, but we are dependent on the generous contributions of our community in order to make that possible. Please consider becoming an iftar sponsor this Ramadan.*
Remembering a Legend
Brother, Friend, Humanitarian

It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of boxing great, humanitarian, and legendary American Muslim Muhammad Ali. We pray that God accepts his good deeds, forgives his sins, has mercy on his soul, and enters him into the highest levels of paradise.

Muhammad Ali was directly connected with the ICSC, especially in the mid 1980s where he frequented and spent much time engaged with our community and praying side-by-side with our members. At that time, members of our youth group also worked with him in social and civic service,  and the ICSC even sponsored him in a speaking tour about Islam.

Ali reflected the soul of America during the 1960s civil rights struggle, but also exemplified a courage that was principled, speaking truth to power, and accepting the consequences. That example holds lessons for American Muslims today.
