Assalamu Alaikum

Dear Family & Friends of ICSC,

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our events last weekend and those of you who welcomed our guests with open arms. We had both our hiking outing and our monthly Get to Know Each Other program with Masjid Bilal.  It was a beautiful weekend full of community building and service.

Coming up on March 5 & 6, we would like to invite each of you to attend our Spiritual Night at the center and the Interfaith March, "In the Path of the Prophet Abraham" - starting at the Wilshire Boulevard Temple and ending here at ICSC. Please mark your calendars, sign up to volunteer, and RSVP to these events. Insha'Allah we will see you there.

Get to Know Each Otherpantry
"Partnerships for Positive Change"
by Kristen Stangas

In January, we began a monthly, joint session with Masjid Bilal called the "Get to Know Each Other" Program. For the first session, we visited them at their center, but the February program was held here at ICSC. The goal of this program is to meet our brothers and sisters from other mosques, learn about what makes us different, and connect through the many similarities that we share.

On Sunday, we invited Mike Farrell, actor, author, and civic activist to come and share his perspective on how Muslims can make change by getting involved in community programs that he has come across during his time as an activist. We also welcomed Mr. Omar Ricci, Ms. Hedab Tarifi, Wasi Momin, and Waffa Abu-Hajar to the podium to share insights from their respective positions in our greater community. Following the formal program, we joined together for sandwiches, salad, and ice cream sundaes. Our center was flooded with a diverse group spanning all ages. This was a nurturing event for children, teens, and adults and we hope to see you all at the next one on March 20th at Masjid Taqwa in Pasadena. Stay tuned for more information.

"Leota"
by Maimouna D.

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure to meet a very kind, friendly woman who was having a very interesting conversation about history with her friends. She was in the parking of lot the Islamic Center, patiently waiting in line for her turn to get her groceries. She nicely agreed on sharing her story. Her name is Leota and she is from Los Angeles.

After George W. Bush took presidency, most of the jobs in Technical Engineering drastically decreased, so she had to follow them up North. Leota found a job in Silicon Valley as Project Coordinator and Documentation Person for Computer-Tech and Bio-tech companies. After she turned 55 she got laid off. Sadly, the following month, Leota lost her mother. Not long after that, her two aunts also passed away. This occurred in 2008, and now, she was really struggling. Leota lost her apartment as she could not find work. As a result, she became homeless.

In 2010 she had her 40th High School reunion. When Leota told her friends that she was homeless, they asked her to come back to Los Angeles so that they could help her. They gave her gas money and rented a storage locker where Leota could put her belongings. Her friends would check on her throughout the day to make sure that she was okay and that she had something to eat. It's an interesting story - Leota came home to be homeless.

Finally after one year, she was able to find an apartment in the SRO (Single Room Occupancy) for homeless people.

"Last year I turned 62 - and now, I don't really qualify for food stamps because I make $859 in Social Security - so they dropped my food stamps to $16 a month and I started coming to this Food Pantry...and that's how I met you, THANK YOU ISLAMIC CENTER!"

Leota shared her story and ended, with the brightest smile on her face. Below is a picture of Leota and her friends Cornado and Jim.
