About a month ago, I started doing a TRX workout a couple times a week. Have you tried it? I LOVE IT! Not sure whether it's because I'm older and like the stability the straps provide or because it's just fun, but TRX actually makes working out seem easy!
(For more info on TRX, see the personal trainer info in Let's Get Moving! at left.)
As badly as this may sound, I have to admit that my body is "broken" (sigh). As most of you know, I spent 10 years working on the road which meant running through airports several times a week, lugging luggage (pun intended), lifting carryon's overhead (often multiple times during a long flight), dashing for rental cars and then of course actually running around manufacturing shops all day long.
I feel tired just typing all that, but it kept my body in fairly good shape. (Of course, it was 20 years younger then too hahaha)
But for the last 10 years, my job has been a sedentary one -- it is not unusual for me to sit down at the computer only to look up and find six or seven hours have passed. And, believe me; I have the shortened hip flexors to prove it! They say sitting can kill you and I believe it. My body feels stiff and tight all over.
To add insult to injury, after the first TRX workout, my quads hurt so badly I could barely walk. But the good news is, with each session, I can do more both in complexity and reps, and so, with time, I'm sure the muscle atrophy will reverse and overall flexibility and strength will improve.
You know, just like your body suffers from a sedentary lifestyle, so too will your psyche suffer if you don't 'take it for a walk' every now and again. What I mean by that is, it's all too easy to live a solitary existence; holed up in your office, working, emailing (or, egad, texting!), writing blogs or newsletters, and mindlessly combing through social media.
Our society as a whole is moving toward an extremely solitary and virtual existence so make a conscious effort to get yourself 'out there' and build some relationships. Whether you work for yourself or someone else, look up from your computer screen. Volunteer for community outreach programs. Have lunch with a colleague. Go to professional and social events. Have fun! And above all else, make human connections.
Fight atrophy of your body and your mind! Take them out for a walk. Exercise both your physical muscles and your mental acuity. And while you're at it, hug someone for no reason whatsoever.....it'll do you good.
