EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S CORNER

On July 25 and 26 there will be a significant event taking place in Rankin County at Park Place Baptist Church. The Rankin Baptist Association and Park Place will be hosting the Growing Churches 2014 Conference. This opportunity will take place on Friday night and Saturday morning through 1:00 p.m. There will be training opportunities for just about anything that you do in and through your church (actually, there are 146 training opportunities). You will want to avail yourself of this opportunity and bring others with you.
Just recently I met with the leadership of the Pearl Ministerial Alliance and they discussed the "Back to Church Sunday" that they are participating in on September 21, 2014. I told them that I would let all the churches affiliated with the Rankin Baptist Association know about this opportunity. For sure, I hope that all the Baptist Churches in Pearl will participate in this, but also this is an opportunity for any church to "piggyback" on this emphasis and use it to reach many more people on that particular Sunday. You may contact me at astephens@rankinbaptists.org 601-939-2182, Wade Chappell at 601-939-4215, or Marcus Thompson, president of the Pearl Ministerial Alliance at mthompson@ihl.state.ms.us for more information.
We are getting great reports on Vacation Bible Schools, mission projects, children's and students' camps.
In Christ,
Allen Stephens

Crossroads Counseling Center
What to look for in a Counselor
The Relationship
by Toby RileyIsaiah 9:6 gives the description of the Christ Child to come, and tells that He will be called Wonderful Counselor. When looking for a counselor, there is no better way to identify a good counselor, than to look for similar characteristics to the Wonderful Counselor. One of the most important characteristics of a counselor is his or her ability to establish relationships. Throughout the Gospels, we see how Jesus interacts with others, both individually and in front of crowds. These interactions can be summed up by Matthew 7:12, where Christ says to "do to others what you would have them do to you". Establishing a positive therapeutic rapport is essential in building the foundation to address whatever issue you may be having in your life. A good counselor must also have compassion. Matthew 9:36 tells us that Christ had compassion for the crowds of people. He saw in the towns and villages He visited, "for they were harassed and helpless". Compassion is sometimes difficult to truly understand, because of the need to speak the truth in love. This means that a good counselor should also be grounded in God's word and be able to speak God's word. Matthew 19:16-30 and John 8:1-11 are two good examples of Christ being faced with having to speak truth in what we would consider difficult circumstances. A good counselor should be able to speak truth with compassion and love.
