The GSSA Weekly from Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama

September 8, 2016

See what our Girl Scouts are doing:

Welcome to GSSA Weekly, the council's e-newsletter.

At right,  the newest members of Troop 8295 are starting on their Daisy Flower Garden Journey. These Daisy Girl Scouts made sun hats from newspaper comic print to provide shade while on their garden journey to learn the Girl Scout Law.

Would your troop like to make newspaper hats? Here's a link.

Cookie Bites: Trainings and Trios!

Troop Cookie Chairs: Order Your Trios by September 26.
Because gluten-free Trios are still in test marketing (and are direct sale only), we need to pre-order from the bakers. We will reserve cases of Trios for troops that want them and will have only a limited supply after that. Pre-Order Trios for your Troop by September 26

ChemScouts - a Fun STEM Day for Brownies and Juniors

Our popular ChemScouts program is back on Sept. 17!

Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama is collaborating with USA's Chemistry Department to present "ChemScouts." The day will include some popular past experiments, such as making ice cream and investigating a "crime scene" in a "forensic lab," as well as some fun new experiments. Girls will see mind-blowing demonstrations by chemistry students and professors.

Mini-Destination: SAVANNAH! June 8 - 11, 2017

Join the Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama for a once in a lifetime trip to the Juliette Gordon Low birthplace in historic Savannah, Ga. Take a step back in time and learn how girls lived in Juliette's day and visit First Headquarters.

Spend a day on Tybee island with Marine Scientist Dr. Joe Richardson and his Beach Ecology Experience and enjoy a dolphin cruise with Captain Derek. Visit Jekyll Island for the Georgia Sea Turtle Girl Scout program.  Enjoy the Savannah River on a riverboat dinner cruise and scare yourself silly on a haunted ghost tour.

This is a great trip for Mothers and Daughters, as well as troops!

This would make a great Christmas gift! Click here for details!

Naturalist Badge Day at Camp Conservation D B J C

Come to Scoutshire Woods on October 8 for an exciting day of science adventure!

Girls will learn first-hand about local wildlife habitats and natural resource conservation as they rotate through a variety of fun activities. Girls will become "tree amigos," participate in geocaching scavenger hunts, construct planters and pollinator houses from recycled materials, and get up close and personal with the skins and skulls of Alabama's forestry wildlife.

Brownies will earn the Bugs Badge. Juniors will earn the Flowers Badge, and Cadettes will earn the Trees Badge. Click here for details and registration information.

Fun Opportunities for Fall! Bring a Friend, too!

Fall is almost here (thank goodness!).  I hope you are as ready as I am for cool breezes, pumpkin spice
everything, SEC football - and the best thing of all, Girl Scout programs! We have so many fun things planned for our girls in the next few months.
Whether your girls like to do cool science activities, explore the outdoors, or celebrate their craftiness, we have just the event for them.  Our many offerings this fall include a day trip to the Dauphin Island Sea LabChemScouts and Kappa Delta Badge Day at the University of South Alabama, a family-friendly event at the Dream Field Farms Pumpkin Patch (my children are so looking forward to this one!), a badge day at the Alabama Wildlife Federation's NaturePlex featuring the new Outdoor Art Badges (11/5; details coming), and our annual Girl Scout Day at Auburn FootballThere is so much to choose from that there is something for every taste!
As you know, it's also membership recruitment time, and what better way to spread the fun and leadership opportunities of Girl Scouting than by bringing a friend to these events?  Just have your child's friend register as a Girl Scout, and they can attend any of these events as an individual member, or (even better) they can join a troop.
I can't wait to see you out and about across southern Alabama this fall!

Other Opportunities
Because we want our girls to have many learning (and fun!) opportunities, we offer this additional calendar for programs that are not presented by our council. Some of these programs are presented by our volunteer Troops and Service Units, others are put on by groups in the communities we serve. Calendar listings do not imply endorsement by the council.  This calendar is available on our Events & Programs page
Please contact the volunteer listed in the program for more information and program status.
