The GSSA Weekly from Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama

May 5, 2016

Welcome to GSSA Weekly, the council's e-newsletter.

At right, Daisies of Girl Scouts of Troop 7374 worked hard to get donations of pet food and other supplies for the East Alabama Humane Society.  They then delivered the donations and took a tour, along with the Juniors and Brownies of their troop.

Excellent work -- thanks for caring for the animals in your area!

Troop 9327's Silver Award: Designing an Historical Scavenger Hunt for the Dept. of Archives & History!

Six girls from Troop 9327 developed a scavenger hunt patch program for the Alabama Department of Archives and History. The girls developed the pamphlet for the hunt, which walks participants through the Hands-On Gallery and the Museum of Alabama. The girls also designed the patch, and donated the design to the Department.

The Girl Scouts chose this idea from a list of options they developed with a focus on providing enrichment activities to older kids' groups. They worked on their project during their regular meetings -- this helped them to set target dates and goals, and to stay on track.

Collect Toiletries Supplies for Camp Sunshine Girls!

This summer, GSSA will run Camp Sunshine, a day camp for underserved girls in Montgomery.  Many of our campers lack hygiene supplies, and we are asking our Troops to help out!

Please collect toiletries like toothpaste, deodorant, and combs for our Camp Sunshine girls.  Please bring them to the Mobile or Montgomery Service Centers.

We are collecting items through May 20.  This is a great way to be a sister to every Girl Scout!  Thank you so much!

You are Invited to Our Gold Award Centennial Celebration!

In the upcoming weeks, we will have two large celebrations, one in Mobile and one in Montgomery to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scout Gold Award.   As many of you know, this is one of three pinnacle awards girls can earn as a Girl Scout.   These are the Bronze Award, the Silver Award, and the Gold Award.
We have many troops working to earn these awards doing lots of projects around the council and within their own community to "Make the World a Better Place."   This will be a celebration of those projects and that hard work.   It is a great opportunity to hear what the girls have accomplished, as well as meet these high-achieving Girl Scouts.
The event will be held on Saturday, May 14, at the Renaissance Riverview Hotel in Mobile and Saturday, May 21, at the Capital City Club in Montgomery.   It includes lunch and some fun, and is $16 to attend.   If you can't attend, but want to be supportive, you can sponsor the lunches of some of our distinguished girl recipients.  Please contact Jeannie Napper at jnapper@girlscoutssa.org for more information.

Other Opportunities
Because we want our girls to have many learning (and fun!) opportunities, we offer this additional calendar for programs that are not presented by our council. Some of these programs are presented by our volunteer Troops and Service Units, others are put on by groups in the communities we serve. Calendar listings do not imply endorsement by the council.  This calendar is available on our Events & Programs page
Please contact the volunteer listed in the program for more information and program status.
