The GSSA Weekly from Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama

April 7, 2016

Welcome to GSSA Weekly, the council's e-newsletter.

At right, participants at Horseback Riding Badge Day learned about horses and their behavior, basic riding skills, and how to care for their mount.  Juniors enjoyed grooming their new friend.  The horse liked it, too!

Troop 8363 Earns Bronze Award -- Congrats!

The 5th Grade Juniors of Girl Scout Troop 8363 completed their Bronze Award on Tuesday, March 22, 2016.

For their Bronze Award Project, they delivered 50 personalized Easter Buckets to the children of St. Mary's Home in Mobile.

The girls met, collected donations, and assembled the buckets over a 2 month period of time.  They involved their schools, churches, and community in this effort and received cash and other donations through events such as school out of uniform days, "Quesadillas for Quarters," and a bake sale.

Nominate Your Favorite Volunteer on our GSSA Facebook Page

In honor of National Volunteer Month, we're giving a nice thank you gift to the volunteer who is tagged most frequently on our GSSA Facebook page!

It's just a fun way to shout out the name of the volunteers who make Girl Scouting special.  Just tag or name your favorite volunteers in the post at the top of the page.

We'll pick the name on Friday, April 8.  Happy tagging!

During the activity program, the girls will work to earn the following badges: Brownies-"Home Scientist", Juniors- "Animal Habitats" badge, Cadettes-"Night Owl."

Spring Break is Over -- Time to Plan for Summer!

Summer means Camp!  Playing in the spillway, gliding down the zip line, and learning camp songs. Making friends (and memories) that will last a lifetime!

Camp is about so much more than vacation.  Girls grow in confidence when they try new activities away from home, under the guidance of trained camp staff.  They even find out they can happily survive without technology for a few days!

Visit our Summer Camp page, or download the 2016 Camp Guide for more information.  Give your girl the gift of the outdoors!

Pat Hall, GSSA Volunteer of the Year

Volunteers are the lifeblood of this organization.   They have been since its inception more than 104 years ago.   Without volunteers, our girls would not be as well poised to change the world, as they do on a daily basis.  We are fortunate to have more than 2,500 wonderful parents and volunteers who work with girls and we appreciate what each person does to make this endeavor successful.
Each year, we choose from our 2,500 volunteers one individual who exemplifies a commitment to the girls and changing their world.   This year, we are delighted that Pat Hall from Butler is the Volunteer of the Year.
Pat was a girl member of Girl Scouts for ten years.   She has served the girls and the community of Butler in Choctaw County for more than 30 years in a leadership role with Girl Scouts.
When I first came to GSSA, I noticed Pat, not because she made a point to remind me of who she was, but because at every event I saw her at, I noticed she wore a Girl Scout uniform.   Pat is quiet and self-effacing.   Not one to draw attention to herself in any way, she is always at annual meetings and council events, present involved and engaged in the business of the council.

Other Opportunities
Because we want our girls to have many learning (and fun!) opportunities, we offer this additional calendar for programs that are not presented by our council. Some of these programs are presented by our volunteer Troops and Service Units, others are put on by groups in the communities we serve. Calendar listings do not imply endorsement by the council.  This calendar is available on our Events & Programs page
Please contact the volunteer listed in the program for more information and program status.
