The GSSA Weekly from Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama

July 23, 2015

Welcome to GSSA Weekly, the council's e-newsletter.

At right, members of Troop #8015 teamed up with employees of Mobile Gas to make dinner for the residents of Ronald McDonald House.

Well done -- and LOVE your t-shirts!

Remembering Wanda Robbins

Longtime Girl Scout volunteer Wanda Robbins passed away suddenly, but she leaves a legacy that local girls in Monroe County will never forget.

Ms. Robbins volunteered with Girl Scouts for over 11 years serving as a troop leader, Service Unit secretary, treasurer, and manager and also began working as a part-time field executive last year.  She was a wonderful asset to the Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama and led in-school troops of girls at both Monroeville Elementary and Blackshear Elementary teaching them courage, confidence and character, and how to make the world a better place.

"She will always be remembered for her sweet nature and passion for serving girls in Monroe County.  We will miss her ever-present smile and always-positive attitude", said Karlyn Edmonds, COO of GSSA.

Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama looks for volunteers who are role models that girls will never forget; Wanda Robbins was just that and will be missed by many.

Invest in a Girl!

Matching Gift Donations
What do the Southern Company, AT&T, PNC Bank, Regions, Coca-Cola, BP, Home Depot, Sherwin-Williams, Sprint, and State Farm all have in common? Employee Matching Gift Programs! These are corporate giving programs where the company matches donations made by employees to eligible nonprofit organizations.  Some companies may even match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses.  Your $50 donation can become a $100 donation!

If your company is eligible, we encourage you to check with your employer to request a matching gift form and for more details.  The impact of your gift to girls in southern Alabama may be doubled or possibly tripled. Please consider making a gift today. Thank you to all our current donors and Matching Gift programs for supporting our mission!

Interns/Volunteers Needed: Fund Development
Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama is seeking interns and volunteers interested in fund development.  This is a great opportunity to learn basics in fund development and to earn college credit and community service hours.  For more information, please contact Melinda Stallworth at [email protected].
Thank You, Camp Volunteers!

It is always nice to be up close and personal with volunteers over a sustained period of time.   I have many opportunities to interact with volunteers, but not over days or weeks.   A shout out to the volunteers who were wonderful and worked at resident camp this summer, doing all sorts of great things and made camp that much better this year.   Rusty and Gwen Black, Caroline Breshears, Elizabeth Conner, Vivian Martin, Tina Savell, and Dana Jones were so very helpful during the camp season.   Thank you for sharing your gifts with the girls.

It is always interesting during the summer to listen to the girls talk about their troop experiences and Girl Scout experiences.   I am always amazed at the wide variety of experiences and adventures these girls have with your planning and assistance.   I found the girls at resident camp this summer to have a high sense of exploration, confidence to get out of their comfort zone, and knowledge about the natural world.   I listened to some girls talk about different types of bugs.   We had another girl who wore her cowboy boots because she was fearful of snakes...
