The latest news from Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama

September 12, 2013

Welcome to GSSA Weekly, the council's e-newsletter.

At right, Girl Scout Press Rep MacKenzie shares her blog entry on our favorite Girl Scout song, Make New Friends.

MacKenzie writes:

In this case, my new friend is also my old one. I was cleaning out my closet when I found a picture of my old Brownie troop from when I lived in Prattville in first grade before I moved away for six years. I was looking at the picture, and I thought I recognized one of the girls. I looked on the back of the picture at the names...

E-Council Membership Registration is Here!

We have started inviting troop leaders to enter their Girl Scout membership registrations through E-Council and have been getting great feedback!

If you haven't received your invitation, please send your email address and troop number to Teri Eversole at teversole@girlscoutssa.org.

We are happy to address any questions as we work through this process together!

Dauphin Island Sea Lab Mini-Destination

Spend a weekend on beautiful Dauphin Island!

Journey into the Gulf of Mexico on the Research Vessel Alabama Discovery, where we will collect fish, shrimp, and crabs to study. Go seining in the salt marshes, take a beach walk, and visit the Estuarium.

This is a great opportunity for girls in grade 5 and older (and their moms) to spend a weekend learning about our amazing marine environment (AND it costs much less than a weekend trip with hotel and meals).

Safety Activity Checklists -- Updated for 2013

Safety Activity Checklists are regularly reviewed and revised, as needed.  Our website has been updated with the latest versions, so please visit our forms page and re-download the checklists that are applicable to your troop's adventures.

Click here if you would like a pdf file (4 MB) of all the checklists.

Knife Safety Skills Kits Available to Check Out

Knife safety is an important outdoor (AND indoor) skill.  We now have Knife Safety Skills Kits available for troops to check out.  Each kit contains 12 knives and a laminated skills sheet.

The cost to check out a kit is $5 with a $25 refundable deposit.  Use an Equipment Rental form (on the Forms page of our web site) to check out a kit from your nearest Council Service Center.

Girl Scout Volunteers are Patriotic

It is a week to remember fallen heroes -- a week of patriotism and reflection.   While we reflect on those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom, it is always good to take stock of ourselves, as well.  What would we have done?   What do we do to make the world a better place?

I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with our volunteers last week.  This is always a delight because I have the privilege of working with some extraordinarily gifted people.   I never cease to be amazed by GSSA volunteers.   So why do they do what they do?
