This 3rd session of The Community Institute and will feature a 1 1/2 day training session with national and regional faculty members, hands-on field work and leadership skills. It will be held in Belfast on Thursday, May 7 and Friday May 8. Faculty include John Massengale, co-author of Street Design:The Secret to Great Cities and Towns, and Chuck D'Aprix, founder of The Downtown Entrepreneurship Project and downtown marketing expert. We will also be sharing local success stories including Mary Kate Reny of the Damariscotta-Newcastle Twin Villages Alliance. Street Design - The Secret to Great Cities and Towns Join us for a FREE evening presentation, open to the public, with John Massengale, co-author with Victor Dover of "Street Design: The Secret to Great Cities and Towns". The talk will be held on Thursday, May 7th at The Colonial Theater in Downtown Belfast at 7 p.m.
John Massengale, AIA, is an international thought leader on the connections between urban design, architecture, placemaking, and walkability. Co-author with Victor Dover, FAICP, of Street Design: The Secret to Great Cities and Towns, he has won awards for architecture, urbanism, historic preservation and architectural history. Massengale is a Board member of the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU), the founding chair of CNU New York, and a former director of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. Massengale has taught architecture and urban design studios at the University of Miami School of Architecture and the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture. With Robert A. M. Stern, he was coauthor of New York 1900: Metropolitan Architecture and Urbanism 1890-1915 and The Anglo-American Suburb. This session of The Community Institute will be held in downtown Belfast at the Colonial Theater and is sponsored by Camden National Bank, Maine Association of Planners, Our Town Belfast, the Belfast Creative Coalition, the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce and others. Grants
Maine Coastal Program grants are now available: The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry's Maine Coastal Program announced that it is seeking applications for a new round of coastal grants for FY 2016. The grants are for municipal and regional projects in Maine's Coastal Zone. The two types of available grants covered by this announcement are Coastal Communities Grants and Shore and Harbor Planning Grants. Funding for these technical assistance grants comes from Maine Coastal Program's annual grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as well as the Submerged Lands Program within the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. The Coastal Communities grants have a maximum award of $50,000, while the Shore and Harbor grant have a maximum award of $30,000. Those eligible to apply include towns in Maine's coastal zone, groups of towns in Maine's coastal zone; coastal Regional Planning Commissions; and coastal Councils of Government.
