On Thursday, June 16, Ed McMahon will serve as the keynote speaker of the Friends of Midcoast Maine Annual Meeting in Damariscotta. His talk "The Dollars and Sense of Preserving Community Character!" will be informative, provocative and inspiring to community members and leaders. McMahon's insights have provided encouragement and inspiration to communities across the nation.

Ed McMahon is a nationally renowned authority on sustainable development, land conservation and urban design. He is the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Charles Fraser Senior Resident Fellow for Sustainable Development, based in Washington, D.C.

McMahon is an attorney, community planner, lecturer, author and expert on the topics of sustainable development, land conservation, urban design and historic preservation. Formerly at the Conservation Fund, he worked to improve both land conservation and land development practices through programs that balance economic and environmental goals. 

The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Theater in beautiful downtown Damariscotta. Refreshments and hearty appetizers will be included in your registration.

Heart & Soul Community Planning

Round 2 Announced

The Orton Family Foundation has announced the second round of applications for the Heart & Soul Community Planning project. Friends of Midcoast Maine assisted Damairscotta with its application several years ago and has been working with Damariscotta ever since in this important project that includes story-telling, community engagement, visioning, and implementation.  FMM is looking for another town to work with on the application and to serve as the non-profit partner.

Tools to Improve Public Engagement: Presentation Available

Thanks to all the folks who joined our newest sets of public workshops on Improving Public Engagement. Attendees used key pad polling and other techniques in this interactive workshop where many methods were modelled and described. You may visit the presentation at Workshop Powerpoint.

In collaboration with the Orton Family Foundation, Friends of Midcoast Maine will be offering two more workshops over the next few months on specific tools to improve public engagement.  These interactive workshops are open to everyone and will focus on tools communities, organizations and others can use to enhance public participation and to build consensus. Specific topics will include The Community Network Analysis, Youth Engagement, and Meeting Facilitation Tips (especially methods to build consensus). A separate workshop on Form Based Codes will also be offered soon.  Stay tuned!
