Field Work Video Clip

Paul Dreher and Trisha Sears from Newport, Vermont led an exercise on Form Based Codes in Downtown Damariscotta last week.  Newport has developed form based codes in a very participatory process involving the entire community in decisions about what should go into the code.

In the field exercise, people were asked to identify things in the downtown that were part of the fabric of downtown--doorways, window heights, amount of glass, distance between doorways and anything else they noticed that makes Damariscotta the place it is. They later worked on writing the elements of a code to replicate that. The exercise and two additional meetings helped everyone understand more about what Form Based codes might do for Damariscotta.

Next Steps

Over the next few months, the townspeople and consultant Robert Orr will be working together to develop a revised code for downtown, Route 1B and the Piper Common areas of Damariscotta. DPAC will help to steward this process and ensure that everyone is involved and stays informed along the way. Stay tuned!

Please forward this information to your friends, neighbors and colleagues who may be interested in hearing more about DPAC and the future of Damariscotta.

Sincerely,
