| CAAP Announces DSA Nominations | |
Honoring those that have made an outstanding contribution to service for low-income families and communities in Pennsylvania...
CAAP is pleased to announce the expansion of the annual Distinguished Service Awards for 2014. For several years, CAAP has given the Sargent Shriver Community Service Award to an individual who represent all the qualities Sargent Shriver demonstrated as a champion of many social programs and organizations, including Community Action, to show appreciation for that person's work in community service.
This year, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, CAAP is expanding the Distinguished Service Awards to include a number of individual and agency based awards. CAAP members are encouraged to nominate individuals and organizations that enhance the lives of individuals and local communities through their involvement, innovation, leadership or advocacy, as well as personal and organizational generosity. The goal of the CAAP Distinguished Service Awards Program is to honor persons and organizations for outstanding performance.
Eight awards will be offered: Sargent Shriver Community Service Award Leader of the Year Board Member of the Year Outstanding Advocacy in the Field of Anti-Poverty/Community Development Staff Member of the Year Innovative Program of the Year Professional Advancement Award Public Official of the Year
The awards will be presented on April 9, 2014 during a ceremony at the CAAP annual conference in Harrisburg, PA. Nomination form can be downloaded from the CAAP website.

| He Belongs to the Ages | |
On Thursday, December 5, 2013, one of the world's most recognizable peace leaders passed away.
Nelson Mandela's willingness to forgive and forget helped peacefully end an era of white domination in his native South Africa. But as news of his death spread, mourners there and around the world professed that he, himself, would never be forgotten.
"Mandela's biggest legacy ... was his remarkable lack of bitterness and the way he did not only talk about reconciliation, but he made reconciliation happen in South Africa," said F.W. de Klerk, South Africa's last white president before giving way to Mandela, the country's first black leader.
After ordering flags to be flown at half-staff, President Obama read from a proclamation, "the United States has lost a close friend, South Africa has lost an incomparable liberator, and the world has lost an inspiration for freedom, justice, and human dignity -- Nelson Mandela is no longer with us, he belongs to the ages."

| Corbett releases draft Medicaid waiver proposal | |
The Corbett administration released a draft Medicaid waiver proposal at 9:00 a.m. this morning. The Pennsylvania Bulletin published the draft of Pennsylvania's Medicaid waiver proposal that embodies Gov. Tom Corbett's "Healthy PA" plan.
The big concepts - health care access, quality and affordability - are the same, as are the general components - a private option for newly-eligible Medicaid recipients and a retooling of the current Medicaid program to include such things as premium and a minimal work search component - as those imparted a few months ago when the governor announced his plan.
Some of the most notable highlights are probably the proposal's two biggest hurdles to clear with federal officials: the imposition of a premium as well as a work-search component.
