 Poverty Tour Continues
The House Republican Policy Committee continues its tour around the state to discuss systemic problems in poverty.

Kicked off with a press conference to introduce "Empowering Opportunities: Gateways Out of Poverty," a policy initiative by the committee. Following the press conference, legislators participated in a poverty simulation. Eighteen legislators and their staff spent several hours living in poverty.
Policy Committee Chair Dave Reed

Rep. Tom Sankey (R-Clearfield) was a 16 year old with a truancy problem. "I ended up in juvie and my 'mom' ended up in jail because I missed too much school.  All because she was so consumed with trying to keep us afloat," said Sankey.

The following day members of the policy committee visited a Circles program in Lebanon. Then the group visited the Altoona Hospital to discuss poverty related health issues. A forum on housing and transportation was held in Clearfield county with CAAP member Stacy LoCastro of Central PA Community Action helping to organize the event.

The committee is also planning on visiting Pittsburgh area to talk hunger and food insecurity, then onto the Philadelphia and Pocono regions.

CAAP has been working with the policy committee as a primary partner.

34K Homeless in the System

An estimate by the National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) found that235,000 Pennsylvanians were homeless, living doubled up with family or friends in 2011.

These data suggest that families and friends are taking care of our homeless neighbors. By contrast, the public homeless housing system served 34,657 in fiscal year 2012. The 34,657 number does not include homeless persons from one region who did not submit data for this report, who were denied or not allowed in shelter, census from domestic violence shelters, runaway youth, and people living on the street or other public places.

 A Major Need

The National Community Action Foundation (NCAF) is in major need of donations for its operations and for CAP-PAC.

For longer than one can remember, NCAF has been the front line protector of NCAF Community Action, CSBG, Weatherization and LIHEAP. The legislative struggles overcome in the past are because of the tireless efforts of NCAF.

Please donate today and ensure the continued efforts of NCAF.

 Volunteers Gain Valuable Employment Skills

Deloitte has released their 2013 Volunteer IMPACT survey. Survey results indicate that skills-based volunteering experience provides a marketability edge for those seeking gainful employment.

The findings support the value HR executives place on skilled volunteering, as well as its relevance for college graduates and veterans transitioning to civilian life.

A Mobile App for Collecting Nonprofit Donations

Collecting nonprofit donations is tough. Often, people want to give but aren't sure they can make a difference or don't know how. Google's latest app for Android users helps demystify the process.

A dollar a day: When President Obama punched his first ticket to the White House in 2008, a lot of credit for the win went to his campaign's ability to raise money via social media, specifically in the form of nominal donations from average Americans. A new app for Android users from Google called One Today applies a similar philosophy and approach to nonprofit fundraising.

Each day, users who download the app are presented with a new nonprofit project for which they are asked to donate $1. One click, $1. If they don't wish to give, they can simply skip the donation and save their generosity for another cause. Venture Beat writer Jolie O'Dell says the app shines in its simplicity. It makes the decision to donate easy, and makes it easy for nonprofits to ask.

"Nonprofits can create projects in about 10 minutes, and the more people share the project, the closer it comes to being fully funded," she says. How does your organization ask for funding?

   Shake Up

With several new staff announcements over the past couple days, the Corbett Administration is shaking up positions in several legislative and communications positions.

After the announced departure of Kevin Harley, long time communications director for Governor Tom Corbett, came rumored announcement of Lynn Lawson to take the communications helm and Valerie Caras from the State GOP also signing on to the team. Former State Representative Katie True will take on the position of Secretary of Legislative Affairs, replacing Chris Carusone. Additionally, Andrew Ritter, Deputy Secretary for Legislative Affairs, also tendered his resignation.

   It's a Little Pitchy

First Lady Michelle Obama will be releasing a hip hop album next month as part of her Let's Move! campaign.

Though she will only be in the videos and not singing, many big artists such as Jordin Sparks, Ashanti, Run DMC, Doug E. Fresh and Monifah will be featured. The album is named "Songs for a Healthier America." It will have 19 tracks and include songs entitled "Veggie Luv" and "U R What You Eat."
