Welcome Remarks By Irene Chia

Good morning everyone and welcome to the 2015 World Tai Chi and Qigong Day celebration in the Philippines.
About WTCQD World Tai Chi and Qigong Day is a global event that is celebrated every last Saturday of April with the goal of promoting the health and healing benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong. Founded by Bill Douglas and Angela Wong Douglas in 1999 in Kansas City, it is now celebrated in over 80 countries. The celebration starts at 10 am in New Zealand and ends at 10 am in Hawaii. This means that every hour, at 10 am, in more than 80 countries, people will be celebrating World Tai Chi and Qigong Day.
In the Philippines, the first WTCQD celebration was held in 2003. It was an informal gathering organized by the Blue Dragon Society. The succeeding celebrations were jointly organized by the Blue Dragon Society, Chevalier Monks of Christ, and Spring of Harmony Internal Arts Club which is now named Peace Blossoms Internal Arts Society. From a handful of individuals, less than 15 people or so, the attendance in this celebration grew to 250 this year.
Theme for this year: PEACE Maraming kaguluhan at paghihirap na nangyayari ngayon sa mundo (wars, conflicts, violence, poverty). Subalit, marami rin ang kumikilos para ipalaganap ang kabutihan. Ngayong araw na ito, kasama natin ang ilang mga grupo na may adhikain o advocacy na kapayapaan.
Gaston Z. Ortigas Peace Institute is a non-profit organization that focuses on peace and conflict resolution. They are active in peacekeeping and peace building efforts in the country.
Martial Arts Federation for World Peace sees that martial arts can pave a path of unity and peace for the 21st century by bringing together various martial arts disciplines to inspire a moral and spiritual renewal among the world's young people.
Our venue, Universal Peace Federation, is a Global Network of Peacebuilders.
Our organization Peace Blossoms Internal Arts Society, aims to promote peace and harmony through Tai Chi and Qigong.
All of these groups have "peace" as part of their vision or mission. Each group has its own expression of peace.
How Can Tai Chi Promote Peace?
The slogan of WTCQD is "One World, One Breath". What does this mean and what is the relation or connection between Tai Chi and Peace?
Tai Chi brings people together--people from diverse backgrounds, from different countries, people from different races, ages (young, middle-aged or old), people from different religious beliefs, political leanings and social backgrounds.
And every last Sat of April at 10 am, Tai Chi practitioners from over 80 countries come together. This day, we are one in spirit. We move as one and we breathe as one.
How can one attain peace through Tai Chi? Tai Chi integrates body, mind and spirit. When practiced sincerely and diligently, Tai Chi transforms us. Tai Chi is inner alchemy. Alchemy is defined as the process transmuting baser metals into gold. Tai Chi brings about a change of consciousness, a purification of our heart and mind. When there is harmony in body, mind and spirit, we are at peace.
What do we in Peace Blossoms want to achieve? Peace on all levels, in our personal lives, in our community, our country, and in the world. All of these are interconnected. We cannot have world peace if there is no peace among countries. We cannot have peace within the country, if there is no peace in our communities. And we cannot have peace in the community, if we as individuals are not at peace with ourselves.
What is happening at the personal level reflects what is happening at the global level. What is happening at the global level reflects what is happening at the personal level. We are all interconnected. Jet li said "We are all one big family." Kaya po magtulungan tayo.
Let us strive to become better people. Let us be kind first to ourselves, then to our loved ones, our neighbors. Let us show kindness to strangers, to disadvantaged groups, to animals. Let us care for our environment because we are not owners but only caretakers of this planet. Let us love our country and contribute to our country's progress.
To all our sponsors, performers, participants and supporters, thank you very much for making this gathering possible.
