World Tai Chi Day 2013 Auburn Alabama
World Tai Chi Day Event in AUBURN, ALABAMA (USA)

Dear World Tai Chi & Qigong Day supporters,

SAFETY FIRST REMINDER: If your local coming WTCQD 2015 event involves a "teach-in" where you show the crowd a few moves of Tai Chi or Qigong to relax and so they can be part of the world wave ... KEEP IT FUN, LIGHT AND EASY. Many come to TC and QG because of health research they are reading, and may be dealing with mobility issues. DO NOT GET NEW PEOPLE TO DO CHALLENGING TAI CHI OR QG MOVES -- KEEP IT LIGHT, EASY AND FUN FOR EVERYONE, when you do the inclusive part of your event.

THE ZEN OF TAI CHI ...
THE ZEN OF BEING:

YinYang

Whether you are new to Tai Chi and Qigong moving meditations or have been doing them for decades ... we all often experience ourselves slightly rushing them, knowing it is good for us to do, so doing it, but with the goal of finishing it so we can move on to something else we have to do.

But as we become more experienced with Tai Chi and Qigong, we catch ourselves in this "utilitarian mode" quicker, and then return to the breath, the letting go, the soong (the sinking), and sink deeply into the experience of that Tai Chi or Qigong movement ... reveling in the center of the moment and the sensation of it.

When we slow down enough to experience that "Zen state" of fully feeling the splendor of all the sensations of our being as the bandwidth of our mind relaxes open to feel "everything all at once," is when life feels miraculous.

The world is constantly in a rush these days. Tai Chi and Qigong's "sinking" or "soong" experience, where we freefall into the center of what we are feeling at that moment ... this is when life becomes miraculous and precious beyond words. It is a state of gratitude and effortlessness where we fully appreciate this miracle of life we have been given.

THIS IS A MODEL FOR LIFE!  As we practice being "in the moment" during Tai Chi and Qigong, we begin to do so more when washing the dishes, feeling the silky sensation of warm water on our skin, or allowing our eyes and mind to fully drink in the colors of the veggies in the super-market produce aisle--an art exhibit beautiful beyond any found in museums. We begin to see the miracle in the mundane. Watch the below video of a World Tai Chi Day event in Belgium, where suddenly all the rushing commuters suddenly feel as though something miraculous has unfolded before them.

TEACHERS, ASK YOUR STUDENTS TO PONDER THIS:

I have been telling my students in preparation for World Tai Chi & Qigong Day 2015, "You may have exciting lives and amazing places to be all the time, like the man in Carly Simon's "Clouds in My Coffee" hit, where he's always in some exotic place watching a full solar eclipse or something. But my life isn't like that, so to have the opportunity once a year to "Play Tai Chi with the entire planet," and then hang out with a very interesting and eclectic group of people (which all Tai Chi or Qigong groups are), is something ... well, something you just don't get to do every day. So, I hope you'll see what an extraordinary gift is being offered to you on Sat. April 25th, 2015, and will open to it--be in the moment, not rushing to the next busy task--and experience something truly amazing, rather than just the old normal stuff. Be a healing part of history!"

As when doing Tai Chi or Qigong, "take a breath and let go of everything" and the world will come to you ...

TAI CHI & QIGONG AS MEDICINE! (PARKINSON'S DISEASE)
Medical Tai Chi

TAI CHI & QIGONG AS MEDICINE (PARKINSON'S DISEASE):

Today and me and Angela's University of Kansas Hospital Tai Chi Meditation classes for people with MS and Parkinson's Disease, one of the longer time students noticed that a new student's "tremors" subsided after our Sitting Qigong meditation, and he told the man that he had noticed that happening to himself. He asked the newbie if he had noticed, and he responded, "YES! I DID notice. I thought this Tai Chi stuff was a bunch of crap. But, I see the light now. I am going to pour myself into this program."  We refer all our students to the Tai Chi Parkinson's research from the New England Journal of Medicine, just one of the tons of research links WorldTaiChiDay.org offers as a free public service and for Tai Chi and Qigong teachers, health professionals etc.  You should absolutely be sharing this research with your students and local community.

To Tai Chi teachers, if you teach people with Parkinson's, you may have to create a modified form to make it accessible and safe for them, as balance and coordination can be a huge challenge. Over time, they will evolve and can learn a long form.

Like Dr. Jeffrey's (see below THANK YOU article), who has created a powerful Short Form approach to Tai Chi, we have created a very short Tai Chi form of about 7 movements here in Kansas City that we loop to make a longer form, and combine it with Sitting Qigong and Moving Qigong meditations to relax and loosen the mind and body--to UNSTRESS students. It has been HIGHLY EFFECTIVE. If you teach only a Long Form, you might consider creating an effective Short Form of a few moves, with lateral, and the 4 angles of movement in it from your Long Form.

We also talk to Parkinson's and MS students about FOOD AS MEDICINE, and refer them to the amazing documentary "Forks Over Knives" because diet is being looked at as an aid to people dealing with these issues, as well as all the rest of us for better health, Food is a huge part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which Tai Chi and Qigong are part of as well. We recommend that food as medicine become part of your teaching as well, and this documentary is mind-blowingly powerful in that regard.

Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans has its students going to culinary school, reports NPR. What do the culinary arts have to do with medicine? When you think about it, a whole lot.

"I think it's forward thinking to start to see, to view food as medicine," says Piper, a fourth-year medical student at Tulane med school. "That's not something that's really on our radar in medical education. But with the burden of disease in the United States being so heavily weighted with lifestyle disease, I think it's a very, very logical next step."
