We open this newsletter's articles with a Memoriam article on Grand Master Chu, an exquisite human being who organized the World Tai Chi Day events in beautiful Bryant Park in Manhattan, New York.

We could tell you about what a shining human being Master Chu was, and how he allowed his light to shine, a brilliant sun shining in the center of the Big Apple, where he quietly altered the lives of people and changed the vibe of the entire city, by cheerfully sharing the wisdom and gifts he had acquired in his life, and then paid forward to better the world.

But, the below video will tell you this and more, better than we could, and in the article on down in the newsletter you can learn more of Grand Master Chu's journey and achievements.

In Memoriam - Grand Master C.K. Chu

Obituary: Grand Master C.K. Chu was one of the great tai chi masters of the twentieth century.
He taught thousands of people Tai Chi Chuan.

New York, New York: Grand Master C.K. Chu, one of the great Tai Chi masters of the twentieth century, died at New York Presbyterian Hospital Saturday, October 12th, 2013, after a nearly two year struggle with cancer. He was 76.

STUDIO FOUNDER. A retired teacher of high school physics at Brooklyn Tech, Master Chu is best known as the founder of the world-famous CK Chu Tai Chi (http://ckchutaichi.com) school in Times Square that was the center of his teaching, training, and writing for 41 years. The school continues teaching his tai chi system, in accordance with his wishes. A dedicated teacher, Chu was at the school six days a week and he personally taught first-time students as well as advanced practitioners. For decades the highlight of the school's traditional Lunar New Year banquet was Chu's toast about the meaning of the new year's zodiac animal; whether rat or rooster or dragon, the moral was invariably to do more tai chi and Nei Kung in the coming year.

PUBLIC HEALTH OUTREACH. The related non-profit Tai Chi Chuan Center-also founded by Chu-has delivered more than 18,000 student hours of tai chi public health programs to senior centers and parks around New York City since its creation in 2000. The largest component, on the Fountain Terrace in Bryant Park from May through September, kicks off each year with World Tai Chi Day and typically attracts 45 students twice a week for free 7:30 AM classes.

Manhattan NY
Master Chu organized the beautiful Manhattan, New York, World Tai Chi & Qigong Day events whose iconic photos were seen by the tai chi and qigong family worldwide, inspiring people all over the world to get involved in World Tai Chi & Qigong Day.

FIGHTING ART. Although the slow, graceful movements of tai chi are widely studied and appreciated for their health-improvement value, Chu never separated health from self-defense. "Tai Chi Chuan," he would say, "is a fighting art." Chu delighted in training tai chi students who won full contact martial arts tournaments, often to the surprise of proponents of hard-style martial arts systems. At the 1981 Madison Square Garden martial arts finals, students Vincent Sobers and Richard Trybulski each won their respective middleweight and heavyweight titles by knockout. At the New York Chinese Martial Art Championship and Tri-State Kung Fu Full Contact tournament in 1996, student Hugh Marlowe also claimed the heavyweight division by knockout. Undefeated for two years in US finals in Baltimore, John Signoriello went on to fight on the United States Kuo Shu Federation Team in Singapore; in 2006 that organization named Signoriello Fighter of the Year.

AUTHOR & TRANSLATOR. Chu's first book, "Tai Chi Chuan Principles & Practice" (Sunflower Press, 1980) includes his translations from Chinese of classical Tai Chi Chuan texts including The Tai Chi Treatise and a famous Question & Answer dialogue with Chen Wei-Ming, along with Master Chu's commentary and interpretations by other famous 19th and 20th century masters. In his 2006 introduction to the third edition, Chu wrote: "Looking back...I see how the tai chi classics are more relevant today than ever. In the 1970s few people had heard of tai chi here in America. Now we have the opposite problem. It's almost as if there's too much tai chi.... The authentic meaning, once available only through a few rare sources, now threatens to be lost in a mountain of information.... For this reason I say consult these classic texts at all times." These classics were part of Chu's everyday instruction: "four ounces," he would say, "deflect 1,000 pounds." Other of his books, in addition to numerous instructional videos, include Why Tai Chi? (2011) and how-to guides The Book of Nei Kung (1986), Eternal Spring Chi Kung (2004) and Chu Meditation (2002). He was also working on two more books: one on Taoist philosophy and another how-to guide, this one on the tai chi short form. His tai chi program was incorporated into the curriculum of the first Martial Arts Studies B.A. Program at the University of Bridgeport (CT).

 Manhattan Master Chu

Master Chu leading the World Tai Chi & Qigong Day events he organized in beautiful Bryant Park in Manhattan, New York. Master Chu's organizing work the iconic photos of his events inspired tai chi and qigong players worldwide.

Born in 1937 in Hong Kong, Chu was educated in martial arts and calligraphy as a child. He studied: Northern Shao Lin from Master See; Fut Ga (Buddha Fist) from Master Lee; Cheng Wing-Gung's Wu style Tai Chi; Yang style from Master Chan a student of Yang Cheng-fu and Tung Ying-jeh; and Judo from Gom Jen (Golden Well), a Japanese Master. Chu has never claimed to be a lineage bearer.

He came to New York in the 1960s for college and graduate studies. He earned a masters degree in physics from Queens College where he met and married Carol Monsees. They raised four daughters at their home in Forest Hills, Queens. Chu always said he began teaching Tai Chi to further his own training. He studied with Master William C.C. Chen and assisted teaching at his school; and he took classes at the Judo Center in the East 70's. By 1970, he was teaching Tai Chi both at Aaron Bank's Karate Academy and Hank Kraft's Judo School in Queens. Finding he had so many students he opened his own school in 1973. On typical weekdays in the 1980s he would leave a full day of teaching at Brooklyn Tech to open the Times Square studio for four hours of classes starting at 4:30 PM, to arrive home by 10PM.

Master Chu is survived by his wife, Carol, their four daughters Elizabeth, Linda, Diane, and Stephanie, and nine grandchildren. The family asks in lieu of flowers that contributions in Master Chu's honor be made to the Tai Chi Chuan Center (http://taichichuancenter.org). A memorial was held at St. Peter's Church (54th and Lexington in Manhattan) at 3 pm on November 9th, 2013.

Australian Women's Maximum Security Prison Now Offering Tai Chi!

WorldTaiChiDay.org advocated Tai Chi & Qigong for Prison Programs for years. Our vision is now reality!

Tai Chi @ The Beach Owner and Master Tai Chi Teacher, Bev Abella,
at t
he Bandyup Maxmum Security Womens Prison, Perth, Australia

The very forward thinking Recreation manager, Steve Adams and his team, requested Tai Chi classes to become part of their activities. He hopes that offering Tai Chi to the inmates will encourage those who don't normally take part in physical activities to become more active.

Also he hopes it will promote a calming atmosphere in an environment often fraught with stress ... and Mr. Adams chose the world acclaimed Tai Chi @ The Beach Program's master Tai Chi teacher, Bev Abella to teach for their prison program.

Judith Trethway, Tai Chi Chih teacher at Folsom Maximum Security Prison in California was a pioneer in prison Tai Chi programs, and has inspired other teachers worldwide.

After she invited Bill Douglas at WorldTaiChiDay.org to present at Folsom, it inspired several other prison Tai Chi programs, including one for the Kansas City Metro court rehabilitation program designed to rehabilitate offenders instead of incarceration.

Folsom's prison statistics showed that inmates practicing Tai Chi Chih had seen a dramatic decline in recidivism (return to prison) rates, and this is in line with other studies teaching meditation to inmates in various prisons.

Currently, WorldTaiChiDay.org is donating Tai Chi and Qigong resources to a Tai Chi program at the Allred Unit, a Maximum Security Prison in Texas, and working with Allred inmate, and Tai Chi group organizes, Willie Milton, to provide Tai Chi resources to prisons all across America. The publisher of The Complete Idiot's Guide to T'ai Chi & Qigong has offered to donate copies of the book to prison Tai Chi program organizers to support their work.

Linda Bowers also pioneered a prison Tai Chi program for the Kansas State Penitentiary for Women in Topeka, Kansas, and certified to inmate students in that program as certified Tai Chi and Qigong teachers.

Genetically Modified Food May Be DANGEROUS, Says Long Term Study!

With many Tai Chi and Qigong teachers now teaching through health institutions, with classes helping those dealing with chronic health challenges, diet becomes part of our training, as Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on Tai Chi, Qigong, Acupuncture, and Herbology or Diet.

A recently released long term study on Genetically Modified Foods showed shocking results that all our students should know about.

Longest-Running GMO Safety Study Finds Tumors in Rats
The researchers say their results show "severe adverse health effects, including mammary tumors and kidney and liver damage, leading to premature death" from Roundup-Ready corn and Roundup herbicide, whether they were consumed separately or together. Almost all of the ill effects manifested after 90 days. By the end of the study, 50 to 80 percent of the females had developed large tumors, compared with 30 percent developing tumors in the control group. In males, liver congestion and necrosis were 2.5 to 5.5 times higher than in the control group, and there were 1.3 to 2.3 times more instances of kidney disease. Overall, among the rats receiving GM corn and/or Roundup, up to 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group.

A documentary "Forks Over Knives" shows how dietary changes can profoundly affect our health, focusing on a whole foods plant based diet, which we can see by the above study should also be organic and non-gmo based as well.

A Qigong Approach to Sub-Flubs
Western Subconscious Fixed False Beliefs & Taoist 5-Element Philosophy

The Subconscious, which rules 85-90% of the energy-body and mind can have belief patterns (tapes or programs) which get fixed (recreated) early in this life and integrated as truth, but are false because they don't have the complete story. They are active below the conscious level of awareness and create most of our outer reality, which can be observed in our repeated life story themes.

Sub-Flubs (subconscious mistakes or untruths) describes these false beliefs... as viewed through the lens of Taoist 5-Element Theory, the 5 great themes of humanity & nature. If one wishes to truly take responsibility for their lives, they must, in some way, name and approach their Sub-Flubs with compassion & love not from their conscious mind but through that deeply centered place (the qigong state) which reaches below the conscious level.
