You can also help support our work, and get a PERSONALIZED version of the banner with|
your local group/school/organization's website included on the poster.

Also, you'll find FREE 3' x 4' POSTER Artwork you can use to get posters printed for

USING YOUR CELL PHONES HD CAMCORDER TO VIDEO YOUR
WTCQD EVENT!

Almost everyone's new cell phones have HD video recorders. Start learning how to use yours, so on World Tai Chi & Qigong Day you can use it to create short 3 to 5 minute video clips of your WTCQD event. Look in the "Apps" icon on your phone screen, and you may find your phone has a high quality HD camcorder feature. Play around with it to get familiar with it.

PRINT OUT A BANNER OR POSTER, using our above artwork, so that it can mark what your event is in the video. Print or write your city, state, country on your WTCQD banner, so people will know where you are from. You can print out the Banner/Poster Artwork and take it to Costco or Kinkos, etc. to print a local event banner, and then write your local group/school, city, state, country on it so when the world sees your WTCQD video, they'll know who you are.

You can post the video clips on Youtube, and use them to promote your local classes, send them to local media to get media coverage of your local group or classes, post on your local group or school's website. Short 3 to 5 minute videos are best. You can shoot a lot of them, but keeping them short makes them more interesting and uploadable. IF YOU ARE A TEACHER WHO IS NOT "TECH SAAVY" - ASK YOUR STUDENTS, SOME OF THEM WILL BE.

After WTCQD we'll do a call for everyone to send in their Youtube video url links, so we can post them on the worldwide website and WorldTaiChiDay.org Ezine Magazine Newsletter, so the world can see your local celebration.

We'll also tell you how to post your video on CNN iReports, etc.  We'll send out how-to's in our newsletters as WTCQD approaches. So, start playing with your cell phone's HD video recorder now, and practice loading video to Youtube, or downloading it onto your computer, so you'll be able to do it quickly on WTCQD when you get home from your event. Our goal is to collect videos from all around the world all day long on WTCQD and post the Youtube links onto our website all day long that day, so you can see the global event unfold.

Thoughts for World Tai Chi Qigong Day 2013
from Mark R. Reinhart - President
National Qigong Association

WTCQD 2013 is on Saturday, April 27, 2013

   National Qigong Association

It's hard to imagine that 2013 marks the 15th year World Tai Chi & Qigong Day has been celebrated now throughout the entire planet! What started as I vision in the heart and mind of Bill Douglas, has blossomed into an event celebrated around the world as humanity shares in the healing power of Tai Chi and Qigong. The simply and eclectic nature of people gathering together to share breath and movement transcends any form of political, religious, ethnic, or socio-economic distinction. As a matter of fact, WTCQD is a perfect way to break down those imaginary boundaries which all too often form the walls that separate humanity.

To move and breathe in harmony with others is a profound simplicity that has to be experienced to be truly understood and appreciated. The styles and systems of Tai Chi and Qigong are as varied as the people who
practice them. But regardless of the style or system, the foundational thread of the principles set forth by the ancients unite all forms. In much the same way, music has the basic structure of sound and rhythm from which infinite permutations of styles and interpretations can result. Do Tai Chi and Qigong share the distinction with music of being a 'universal language'? I'd like to think so. Realigning with the wisdom of nature has been at the heart of all forms of the Ancient Arts since the beginning.

The National Qigong Association (NQA) has always walked hand-in-hand with WTCQD from the early days when one of the NQA's founders Dr. Roger Jahnke suggested to Bill to include Qigong into what was then titled World Tai Chi Day. It was a natural. Since then the mission of spreading the word about the benefits of the Chinese Energetic arts, bei it Tai Chi or Qigong, has evolved into a wave spreading around the world in an exponential fashion.

In this day and age, there is new means of communication which, while bringing the world closer together runs the risk of doing it in a less personal way. In my humble opinion, there will never be a substitute for the person to person sharing of energy where communication on all levels can occur honestly and genuinely. So let us all gather together on the last Saturday in April to once again celebrate WTCQD. We at the NQA seek to keep the energy flowing throughout the year via our annual conference, an ever increasing number of Regional Events around the country, and NQA Day on the first Saturday of October.

Please join us, Bill, Angela and the NQA, as we Cultivate Wisdom, Health and Peace by sharing One World... One Breath.

Blessings, Balance, and Abundant Qi

Ending the Myth of Tai Chi as Religion

One Tai Chi teacher's commentary on the myth
of mind-body arts as religion ... and how that myth
endangers our children's health

Energy Flow

This week the online magazine AlterNet ran an article entitled,

"Christians Protest Yoga in Schools"
Mary Eady, one of the parents organizing against Encinitas' yoga program, described to a Times reporter what she sees as religious content: "They're teaching children how to meditate, how to look for peace and for comfort... It's meant to shape the way they regulate their emotions."
AlterNet by Katherine Stewart

I once had to prove to a hospital board that tai chi wasn't a religion when I started classes at a major 7th Day Adventist health network in our area 15 YEARS AGO. With all the mounting medical research, I thought those days were behind us, I thought we'd emerged from the dark ages, so to speak, and into the age of enlightenment. But, some old superstitions die hard, as the above AlterNet article shows.

Most Tai Chi and Qigong teachers have encountered at least one new student who asked if tai chi or qigong would challenge their religious beliefs. Its been years since this has happened to me, but in my early days of teaching, before all the scientific research proving tai chi and qigong's health beneifts, it used to happen more often. It was never a religion per say that was the cause of it, but rather it would be one individual place someone, or someone's aunt, had attended that taught them to mistrust mind-body practices.

My own stock answer to that odd question, when that question came up in my classes, was, "Well, I am a Lutheran, but I promise not to try to indoctrinate anyone into the Lutheran Church during my tai chi and qigong classes."

Of course, tai chi, qigong, yoga, meditation, etc. are mind-body sciences. These arts are proven to lower high blood pressure, reduce anxiety and depression, etc. etc. It would be neanderthal to ban science from our children's science education, especially when that science knowledge could dramatically improve their lives. The superstitions of a few parents, should not punish the whole of society.

I've had ministers of different churches in my classes, and people of all major faiths, and I have taught tai chi for churches and temples in the past, including one presentation I was commissioned to do for the National Catholic Youth Conference's annual gathering.

Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, etc. all over the world practice the health practices of tai chi, qiong, yoga, and meditation, with no challenge to their faith whatsover, but with alot of great health benefits.

What I have found over the years is that some small sects within religions use religion to justify their own prejudices. I have heard some people say that "things from the East are satanic."

My wife, Angela Oi Yue Wong-Douglas, is from the East. Angela is the furthest thing in the world from satanic, and it disturbs me deeply to hear people spout such prejudices.

Angela

But, I digress. Tai Chi and Qigong are highly sophisticated mind-body sciences that many centuries of studious researchers, from a brilliant and science based Chinese culture, have built to enable human beings to maximize their body's natural defenses against injury and illness.

I want to expand on this point about China being a science based culture. Because the Chinese researchers approached health in a wholistic way that is different from the western reductionist approach does not make it less of a science. The more I learn of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which Tai Chi and Qigong are a part of, the more amazed at just how far ahead of their time ancient Chinese researchers were. For example, Tai Chi and Qigong are based on the same foundation as acupuncture, that there is a flow of subtle energy moving through the tissue of the body and the goal of tai chi, qigong and acupuncture is to balance that flow, and to unblock blocks that impede that flow. In acupuncture there are 361 main energy points on the skin, mapped out by Chinese researchers long before the world had electronic instruments. Did you know that those points can now be detected with something akin to an ohm meter, because the acupuncture points are the points of least electrical resistance on the skin?

Medical Tai Chi

These tools are designed to help cleanse the stress from the energy field that is the mental, emotional, and physical body, and when that stress is reduced the immune system functions better, the mind works more effectively, and people tend to be kinder and more sociable when cleansed of emotional stress.

To deny children the sciences of mind-body practices would be the equivelant of denying a sick child an antibiotic when one is needed in a time of crisis. How is this comperable, you might ask? A UCLA study found that tai chi boosted the helper t cell counts of practitioners by 50%, thereby boosting their immune system function by 50%.

It would be unethical for schools to censor such information from their students, especially at the time we are living in today. The world is changing faster than at any time in human history. Change is stressful, even good change. Our children's world is changing at light speed, and will only accelerate. A prescription for the future is mind body stress management tools. To deny this knowledge to our children is to hobble their future.

Science is science, period. Educational institutions should teach science. Tai Chi and Qigong are health science at its highest level. I've taught them through medical school classes and through major health networks.

Each year since 2010, WTCQD has served to bring together hundreds of Tai Chi
and Qigong teachers and practitioners on the island of Oahu, for a day of
celebration of our common interest in internal martial arts. We have been
privileged to provide demonstrations, workshops and presentations to the
general public free of charge, while also helping raise funds for organizations
through product sales and concessions.

Prior to celebrating WTCQD, most of the teachers on Oahu operated without knowledge of one another, without the benefit of networking with each other to expand our horizons and making referrals to each other when approached by prospective students from various parts of the island. Preparations are being
made for a Fourth Annual WTCQD, one which we hope is bigger and better
than the previous years' events.

Mahalo (thanks) to you, Bill, and your group of colleagues who have worked
hard to increase awareness of the countless benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong to
every part the world.
