Tai Chi: The No-Sweat Way to Boost Immunity
Prevent colds and flu with this easy 20-minute workout
By Marianne McGinnis, Prevention Magazine
To keep sick days at bay, trade your vitamin C in for a dose of tai chi. It's cheaper, more effective (revving up your body's disease-fighting defenses by as much as 47%), and even triples the protection you get from a flu shot. The secret to tai chi's elixir-like quality, scientists suspect, lies in its slow movements and controlled breathing. Tai chi then marshals the power of both to fight germs. It also zaps stress and helps you to sleep better--both key to a healthy immune system. Get started today with our no-sweat 20-minute routine--you don't even need to change!
Bill Douglas, a Kansas-based tai chi instructor [founder of World Tai Chi Day] and author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to T'ai Chi and QiGong, designed this workout.

URGENT ACTION!
The White House Petition to Cover Acupuncture for Medicare Patients EXPIRES 2/10. IF YOU WANT TO SIGN IT, IT MUST BE TODAY!
WorldTaiChiDay.org just received this request to sign the White House Petition to cover acupuncture for Medicare patients.
We advocate this for one simple reason: acupuncture works. Medical research proves that acupuncture can be a cost effective therapy for a host of health issues. It is unfair to deny its coverage to Medicare recipients who could benefit from acupuncture, and it ends up costing the nation more in health costs, when acupuncture it not covered.
By not covering acupuncture, patients are pushed to rely on more expensive and invasive and risky pharmaceutical or surgical solutions that acupuncture may help them avoid.
Here is the message we received asking us to sign the petition, with the link to the petition.
The petition, started one month ago,
needs 25,000 signatures by February 10to get a response from the White House regarding the inclusion of acupuncturists in the Social Security Act. Currently, we have over 10,000 signatures. If you have not yet signed this important petition, please do so now by visiting the following link by February 10:
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/recognize-acupuncturist-healthcare-providers/NTNpVFnp
Please immediately spread the word and forward this petition to your friends and family as every signature counts !
Thank you for your support and fast action !

How Tai Chi and Qigong are Like Dental Flossing ... mental flossing?
An article I saw in Everyday Health Ezine (The Link Between Gum Disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis), quoting Dr. Scott Zashin of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, explained that a lack of dental flossing can lead to mouth inflammation and infection, "setting off a cascade of events where inflammation develops at the sit of the joints or arthritis."
I had also read years ago that poor flossing habits could lead to heart disease, because fighting infection is hard on the heart, so a chronic dental infection puts constant strain on the heart.
So, what does this have to do with Tai Chi and Qigong, you might be asking yourself? Everything!
In the newly released fourth edition of my Complete Idiot's Guide to T'ai Chi and Qigong, I mention various medical studies reported worldwide have found that Tai Chi can boost your immune system foundational defense of Helper T-Cells by anywhere from 50% to 100%. Helper T-Cells are your body's main defense against infection, they actually eat bacteria, virus, and even tumor cells.
The Western student is often disspointed to learn that they must do Tai Chi or Qigong for the rest of their lives in order to enjoy these benefits. They've been conditioned to turn over their health to a physician to "cut out bad things" or to "give them a pill" that will "fix" or "kill" bad things. But, Tai Chi and Qigong are really akin to dental floss in this way. You need to floss everyday.
The difference, really, between flossing and Tai Chi and Qigong, is that Tai Chi and Qigong can be very enjoyable, whereas flossing ... not so much. A huge hurdle for me in sticking with Tai Chi and Qigong was getting over a lifetime of conditioning that had taught me that exercise had to hurt. I tell my students, when I was in Jr. High football in West Texas, at the end of practice the coach would make us all run until one of the kids threw up. It was the only time in my life that I actually wanted to see someone throw up. This left me hating exercise, until I discovered Tai Chi and Qigong.
Tai Chi and Qigong are about learning how to move effortlessly, and to learn how to savor and enjoy the sensation of movement. In my book's first chapter, I teach what's known as "the unbendable arm." The subject uses all their muscular strength to try to keep their arm from being bent, and then I teach them how to relax and let qi, or life energy flow down through their body, shoulder and arm, and then they find that their arm will not bend, even though it seems much easier than when they were using their muscles, with a relaxed arm and energy flowing through it, it simply will not bend. This is a profound life lesson. Life does not have to be hard. Tai Chi and Qigong do not have to be hard. They can be easy, fun, loose, and enjoyable.
That attitude is what keeps us coming back to these arts. By enjoying them, we make them a daily practice, and in doing so, we floss the mental strain from our mind, heart, and body.
The Chinese talk about the "3 - dan tiens," in this short video from my book's web-video support videos, I explain how we are made of energy, something Chinese researchers learned thousands of years ago, but western science has only discovered in our lifetime through quantum physics research.
We are an energy field, and this energy field can "magnetize" or "squeeze onto" old stresses, or it can breath, loosen, and visualize those old pressure and tensions being exhaled and massaged away by Tai Chi and Qigong's gentle flowing movements.
Tai Chi and Qigong are like flossing the accumulated stress out of our mind, heart, and body, so that all of the body's functions are clearer and more effective. By doing it daily, we not only cleanse the stress tartar and plaque that we've collected that day off, but we begin to get deeper down into old collected stresses that we may have buried deeply inside us from years or even decades before.
TCM, Tai Chi and Qigong, are really forms of "energy medicine" when you boil them down to their essence, and less about "making" things happen, and more about surrendering to the radiant power of our effortless nature. A famed Taoist line sums it up, "In doing nothing all things are done."
Force, effort, strain ... these are all masculine or yang approaches to life. Contemplation, surrender, yielding, receiving ... all feminine or yin traits. The great Taoist poet, Lao Tzu wrote, "Know the masculine, but keep to the feminine." He also wrote that that quiet still yin part of the world is by far the most powerful.
Practicing these yin, internal arts, of surrender, yielding, and "letting go" help us cleanse the accumulated stress loads, just the same way dental floss cleanses accumulated bacteria. Just as dental hygene helps promote heart and immune system health, so do Tai Chi and Qigong support all aspcts of our mind, body, and emotional health.
Tai Chi and Qigong are a highly evolved form of "mental floss." it is wise to floss daily :-)
Below are a couple of video excerpts from the web-video support in my newly released fourth edition of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to T'ai Chi & Qigong."

BREAKING Medical Research:
* Tai Chi more effective than glucosomine and shark cartilage!
* Qigong Shows Promise in Breast Cancer Study, * ALSO Improves Heart Health, Bone Health, & Balance! * Tai Chi Improves Brain Function, says Harvard!
* Tai Chi is Pain Solution Beyond the Pill Bottle!
* Korean Study Shows Tai Chi for Knee Arthritis!
Researchers from the MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas found that practicing qi gong was linked with decreased depression and increased quality of life in women who were undergoing radiotherapy for their breast cancer.
The findings are important because past research has shown an association between depression and worse outcomes for cancer patients.
The new study, published in the journal Cancer, included 96 Chinese women who had stage 1, 2 or 3 breast cancer and were going to the Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center in China. ...
Researchers found that women who did qi gong experienced a decrease in depressive symptoms by the end of the study, while women who were in the control group didn't experience any decrease in symptoms. They also noted that the women who had the highest scores on the depression scale were the ones who experienced the greatest benefit -- both in decreased depressive symptoms and improved quality of life -- from qi gong.

A recent Harvard study has even found that tai chi can improve your brain functions. According to Harvard Medical Instructor, Catherine Kerr, "Tai chi is a very interesting form of training because it combines a low-intensity aerobic exercise with a complex, learned, motor sequence. Meditation, motor learning, and attentional focus have all been shown in numerous studies to be associated with training-related changes-including, in some cases, changes in actual brain structure-in specific cortical regions."

Another non-drug strategy that may be useful for relieving several kinds of pain is Tai Chi. This exercise regimen consists of a series of postures that are performed in a set sequence. You move in a flowing motion from one posture to the next while centering your mind by focusing on an area just below the navel, described by practitioners as the body's storage point for chi (energy). On the physical side, practice enhances balance, coordination, flexibility, muscle strength, and stamina. On the mental side, tai chi helps to relieve stress, improves body awareness, and reduces social isolation when done in a group setting. Emerging research shows that tai chi has many positive attributes for people with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, tension headache, and other painful conditions.

Mind-body. You can soothe achy joints and improve mobility with mind-body techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation, yoga, meditation, tai chi and guided imagery. A recent study from Korea found that tai chi is significantly beneficial for controlling pain and improving physical function in people who have osteoarthritis in the knee.
