Slowly Breathing in Strength
A Simple desire to make everyone healthier has prompted one man to organise World Tai Chi Day from his Kansas home South China Morning Post, April 1, 2000
[World Tai Chi & Qigong Day Founder, Bill Douglas] has staked his life savings on setting up the website www.worldtaichiday.org and getting everything organised - the fax bill alone last month was about $15,000; what return can he possibly expect? "I don't know. I have no idea," he admitted on the phone from his hometown of Kansas City, "I just knew I had to try it."
Douglas ... first became interested in spreading the word about tai chi when his mother died several years ago during an angioplasty operation. Already a teacher of the martial arts form, he tried to interest his parents in trying tai chi for their health, but both had rejected it as "too weird."
But afterwards he found a note his mother had written just before the operation.
"She said she wished that a couple of years ago she had paid attention to the exercise I wanted to teach her: she said she wished she had done it so that she could see her grandchildren grow up."
It made Douglas think about how many other people he could help before it was too late: "I wanted tai chi to be so widespread that nobody could think of it as weird."

During the historic International Tai Chi Symposium at Vanderbilt University, when WTCQD Founders met with the five grandmasters of the Chen, Yang, Wu, Wu Hao, and Sun styles of Tai Chi. (Chen Zhenglei, Yang Zhenduo, Wu Wenhan, Ma Hailong, Sun Yongtian), all five grandmasters agreed that ALL styles of Tai Chi offer the same benefits when done correctly, thereby once and for all ending any need for conflicts or arguments between Tai Chi players of various styles.

Meta-Analysis Study by Japan Geriatrics Society finds Tai Chi Reduces Depression
Tai chi and reduction of depressive symptoms for older adults: A meta-analysis of randomized trials
Depression is a significant mental health problem. Worldwide, depression ranks second only to heart disease in terms of impact on disability-adjusted life years ... The present review aimed to overcome some limitations of existing reviews by analyzing the effectiveness of tai chi on reducing depressive symptoms among older adults using the vigorous systematic review method detailed in the Cochrane Handbook.
Abstract:
The aim of the present article was to systematically review the effectiveness of tai chi for reducing depressive symptoms among older adults ... Tai chi appeared to have a significant impact on reducing depressive symptoms compared with the waiting list control groups.
Conclusion:
Based on the results, we can conclude that tai chi is effective in decreasing self-reported depression compared with a waiting list control.

Breath to Ease Hot Flashes
... women who practiced slow [qigong-style] breathing -- defined as six breaths per minute instead of the usual 14 or so -- for 15 minutes twice a day reported slightly more relief from hot flashes after two months [than a control group who only did it once per day, or breathed normally for 10 minutes a day].

Australia's Brisbane Times reports:
US medical research group the Mayo Clinic says the health benefits enjoyed by an estimated 2.5 million American tai chi practitioners include: decreased stress and anxiety; increased aerobic capacity; increased energy and stamina; increased flexibility, balance and agility; and increased muscle strength and definition.
There is evidence that tai chi can enhance sleep quality and the immune system; lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure; improve joint pain; improve symptoms of congestive heart failure; and improve general wellbeing in older adults as well as reduce their risk of falls, says the Minnesota-based not-for-profit Mayo.
Web-based Medical News Today lists dozens of scientific studies that show health benefits associated with tai chi include: helping patients with Parkinson's Disease; improving memory and brain function; relieving arthritic pain; and combating depression.
A new Sydney University study, published in the European Respiratory Journal, found that tai chi "significantly improved" exercise capacity, muscle strength, balance and quality of life for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Study leader Regina Leung, a physiotherapist and PhD candidate in the university's health sciences faculty, said patients also reported improved concentration and decreased stress.
Texas Tech University Health Services Centre published a study showing that tai chi boosted bone health and muscle strength.
"Participants taking tai chi classes also reported significant beneficial effects in quality of life in terms of improving their emotional and mental health," researchers said.
Hospitals from Brisbane to Toronto are turning to tai chi to help patients suffering from chronic pain.

PBS Airs Tai Chi Program Viewed by Tens of Millions!
In 2009, Arthur Rosenfeld set off on a pilgrimage of sorts. A tai chi master and practitioner of the Chinese martial arts for over 30 years, Rosenfeld was ordained a Taoist monk by the Chinese government (in association with the Chun Yang Monastery in Guangzhou) in 2012. An author and authority on Chinese wisdom for Western audiences, Rosenfeld wanted to understand the science behind the arts of meditation, acupuncture and tai chi. His journey took him to a variety of universities, hospitals, and research facilities where he met and interviewed professionals from a variety of academic backgrounds. His research convinced him that the positive results he and millions of others have experienced with all three of these arts have a firm foundation in science. To share this information, as well as provide instruction and guidance, the results of his research have been compiled into a series of three popular DVD's, distributed by health care practitioners, appropriately titled, Harmony in Motion: The Science of Tai Chi, Energy Medicine: The Science of Acupuncture, and Stillness in Thought: The Science of Meditation. The material was so compelling that, in late 2010 PBS began national airing of Longevity Tai Chi With Arthur Rosenfeld, a show that coupled it with instructional footage. The program is a runaway success with over 56,000,000 households (180,000,000 viewers) tuning in and has reached more people than any other tai chi program to date.
While the "science of" series focused primarily on the science behinds the arts along with a primer of instruction for the viewer, it became obvious based upon the success of "Longevity" that there was an interest in more detailed instruction. The effort to create a series of instructional DVDs began in mid-2011 and culminated with the production of a three DVD set in 2012. The "Healthy Lifestyle" series, also distributed exclusively through healthcare providers, focuses on the "how to" rather than the "why to" of tai chi, meditation, and qigong. Helping thousands directly benefit from these ancient healing and self-cultivation practices, it has also met an enthusiastic audience.
Readers of Rosenfeld's critically acclaimed crime and literary novels and his best-selling non-fiction titles (His 2003 title The Truth About Chronic Pain was a finalist for the coveted Books For A Better Life award) will be happy to hear that this modern-day master has turned his literary attention to the paths, secrets and methods of tai chi. 2013 will see the publication of Tai Chi - The Perfect Exercise. This groundbreaking and enlightening work will delve deeply in the art of which so many enjoy and seek to understand. Until then, you can catch up on Rosenfeld's writings by visiting the Huffington Post, on which he blogs regularly.
2013 will also see the re-launch of Rosenfeld's website at www.arthurrosenfeld.com (or www.playtaichi.com) which will serve as a refuge from the hectic pace of everyday life. Through the site, Rosenfeld will offer wisdom, guidance and lessons for those on the "path". In the meantime, those in South Florida can find Rosenfeld teaching every week at a tucked away park in Lighthouse Point. Stop by, meet him and take a class.
Arthur Rosenfeld is a martial arts master and authority on Taoist wisdom for the Western world. He specializes in using tai chi movement and philosophy for personal growth and transformation. His writing and teaching has been covered in local and national media including Newsweek, Ebony, New York Daily News, Florida Sun-Sentinel, Parade, Fox News Channel, Boca Raton Magazine, and syndicated national radio and television shows. His syndicated blog appears on The Huffington Post and is recurrently featured on Google News, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal and more. The Arthur Rosenfeld award for writing excellence is yearly awarded at the international Action on Film Festival in Los Angeles.

WorldTaiChiDay.org Comment:
16 years ago, World Tai Chi & Qigong Day founder, Bill Douglas, followed Qigong visionary and film producer, Francesco Garripoli, at the podium at the NQA National Annual Conference.
Bill expanded a vision of a global health education event that at the time was called World Tai Chi Day. The NQA board at the time embraced this vision and made it their own. NQA boardmember, Roger Jahnke, urged Bill to rename the global event to World Tai Chi & Qigong Day. And through the NQA's enthusiastic involvement, this vision of a global family of Tai Chi and Qigong practitioners, coming together each year on the last Saturday of April, became the reality of a global health & healing phenomenon that it is today.
WorldTaiChiDay.org wants to take this opportunity to acknowledge that without the NQA, World Tai Chi & Qigong Day, and this extraordinary global tai chi and qigong movement we all participate in each year to educate the entire planet about the benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong ... would not exist.

WorldTaiChiDay.org Commentary:
In a January, 2013 article, Consumer Reports on Health reported "The Fluzone High-Dose (flu) vaccine ... can cause more side effects than the usual vaccine ... Clinical trials have shown that the shot triggers higher levels of flu antibodies in older people, but it's not yet known if that translates into fewer cases of the flu ...
... Fluzone High-Dose causes a greater frequency of the side effects associated with the normal-dose flu shot, including fever, headaches, malaise, muscle aches, and soreness of the injection site ...
Until more is known about how protective the high-dose shot is, the normal dose flu vaccine remains the best option."
In the above mentioned Consumer Reports article on flu vaccine, it advises against the new Fluzone High-Dose vaccine until it is researched more. However, their conclusion is that the normal dose vaccine, which they admit in the article causes side effects of fever, headaches, malaise, muscle aches, and soreness of the injection site, is the "best option."
In our recent WorldTaiChiDay.org Newsletter we listed a summary of a Prevention Magazine Winter/2012 article about a 2012 University of Wisconsin, Madison study that found that mindful meditation can cut your chances of catching a cold by 40 to 50%, and a University of Virginia study that found their university's varsity swimmers using Qigong once a week or more, had 70% fewer respiratory infections.
This followed on the heels of a UCLA study of several years before that found that a Tai Chi group boosted their body's Helper T-Cell counts by nearly 50% over a control group not practicing Tai Chi. Helper T-Cells consume virus, bacteria, and tumor cells.
Given that research is proving again and again that Tai Chi, Qigong, and Meditation boost immune function and reduce our chances of contracting the cold or flu, or other viral infection, why aren't popular magazines giving Tai Chi, Qigong, and Meditation that same constant recommendations that pharmaceutical solutions get? Why does the NIH only fund Complimentary and Alternative Health research with less than one half of one percent of NIH funding?
This is not necessarily an either/or, or one-versus-the-other issue. The Qigong Institute, creators of the Qigong Medical Research Database poured over all available medical research that involved Qigong, and what they found without exception is that in every case, when patients were getting a standard surgical or pharmaceutical therapy in combination, they healed better and responded to the standard treatment better than people only getting the standard therapy, and not the Qigong.
For example, the US National Library of Medicine National Institute of Health's website posts an abstract entitled: Effects of a Taiji and Qigong intervention on the antibody response to influenza vaccine in older adults.http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17708626
Its conclusion, according to Professor and Tai Chi teacher, Yang Yang, is that the older adults getting flu vaccinations who practice Tai Chi and Qigong had much higher antibody responses to the vaccination than the non-tai chi and qigong practicing control group.
Given what science knows about Tai Chi and Qigong's ability to maximize circulation, increase breathing capacity, and boost immune function, with ZERO negative side-effects, why isn't mainstream health media getting it that Tai Chi and Qigong should be advocated in very health related article promoting a pharmaceutical solution.
It is not an either/or issue, it is a "how do we get people the best health solutions" issue, and in every case, according to the Qigong Institute's research, Tai Chi and Qigong are part of that solution.
