World Tai Chi Day.org: News for People Changing Their Lives and Their World w/ Tai Chi & Qigong ...
WorldTaiChiDay.org Newsletter:
New England Journal of Medicine reports on study showing Tai Chi effective in treating Fibromyalgia . . .
Why Aren't Tai Chi & Qigong Revolutionizing Healthcare?
WTCQD Founder, Angela Wong-Douglas speaks at National Council on the Aging meeting organized by Roger Jahnke (to Angie's left), creating an efficacy guide to help aging professionals incorporate Tai Chi into their aging programs.

NEW HEALTH RESEARCH:
Below is an article on how Tai Chi has been proven to help treat Fibromyalgia, with a link to the study. In the conclusion of the study it recommends Tai Chi for further study.
In this newsletters title we asked the question "Why Isn't Tai Chi Revolutionizing Healthcare?" Of course, given that Tai Chi and Qigong dramatically boost immune function, lower high blood pressure, reduce depression and anxiety, lessen chronic pain, build bone mass, improve balance, and so much more ... the should be commanding massive research budgets.
In fact, Harvard Health Publications wrote that Tai Chi should be called "medication in motion" because of all its myriad health benefits.
So, again, why aren't Tai Chi and Qigong revolutionizing healthcare and commanding massive research budgets? It may surprise you to know that only about 1/2 of 1% of the NIH budget goes to fund Complimentary and Alternative Medical Treatments. This means that Yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, Aromatherapy, Acupuncture, Massage Therapy, etc. etc. have to compete for the tiny crumb of "one half of one percent" of NIH funding for research.
What is wrong with this picture? When a UCLA study found that Tai Chi boosted immune system function by 50% that should have sent an avalanche of funding to Tai Chi and Qigong research, because it portended billions and billions of potential healthcare cost savings if fully explored.
But, it didn't. Why didn't it?
It is time to start asking what is wrong with our health care system? Is it a healthcare system or is it a drug system? Are we as a nation dedicated to health, or are we dedicated to a drug industry?
Remember that these NIH dollars are our tax dollars. They belong to us, and we deserve to have some answers.
You can participate in this poll at www.WorldTaiChiDay.org found on the right side of top of homepage.
A new documentary "Escape Fire" is challenging the very tenats of the modern healthcare system, that also explores mind-body solutions. See below trailer, and below articles explaining how Tai Chi and Qigong can be part of a global health revolution.
Let's spread the word about this coming new documentary, so that we can expand the national healthcare discussion, and thereby expand options for the future of healthcare.

Tai Chi Treats Heart Disease
TAI CHI CAN TREAT HEART FAILURE ! -- BBC News
A total of 29 studies met inclusion criteria, including 9 randomized controlled trials, 14 nonrandomized studies, and 6 observational trials. The study subjects included patients with coronary heart disease, heart failure, CVD, and CVDRF (hypertension, dyslipidemia, impaired glucose metabolism). Tai Chi interventions ranged from 8 weeks to 3 years, and the sample size ranged from 5 to 207. Most studies reported improvement with Tai Chi intervention, such as reduction in blood pressure and increase in exercise capacity. In addition, no adverse effects were reported. The authors concluded that Tai Chi may be a beneficial adjunctive therapy for patients with CVD and CVDRF.- Medscape Today, from WebMD, 10/26/2010

Tai Chi 'can treat heart failure'
A US study of 30 patients found regular classes gave patients better movement and reduced BNP levels, a measure of heart failure.
A number of the patients attended twice weekly classes for 12 months while a second group had standard treatment.
The British Heart Foundation said the study was "excellent news" and Tai Chi could be adopted into treatment programmes in the UK in the future.
Heart disease. A 53-person study at National Taiwan University found that a year of tai chi significantly boosted exercise capacity, lowered blood pressure, and improved levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, and C-reactive protein in people at high risk for heart disease. The study, which was published in the September 2008 Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, found no improvement in a control group that did not practice tai chi.
Heart failure. In a 30-person pilot study at Harvard Medical School, 12 weeks of tai chi improved participants' ability to walk and quality of life. It also reduced blood levels of B-type natriuretic protein, an indicator of heart failure. A 150-patient controlled trial is under way.
Harvard Medical School's Health Publications, May, 2009
HEART DISEASE. At the Institute of Psychology, Academia Sinica, a research study found that T'ai Chi and QiGong practice can positively affect the states of mind of subjects to lessen the incidence of Type-A behavior patterns, believed to increase the risk of heart disease.

Tai Chi Treats Lung Disease COPD - Says Australia Lung Foundation.
Evidence-Based Tai Chi Treatment
Australian Aging Agenda, 8/16/2012
A new study from the University of Sydney, hailed as one of the most comprehensive and conclusive studies of its kind, suggests that Sun-style of Tai Chi is not only a valid but an incredibly effective form of exercise therapy for people with COPD, which improves a person's capacity to improve exercise capacity and quality of life.
Recently published in the European Respiratory Journal, the research has also found that the more gentle brand of Tai Chi may be as beneficial as the traditional exercise of standard pulmonary rehabilitation. . . .
According to Australian Lung Foundation figures, the treatment could help an overwhelming percentage of people with COPD, as only about one per cent of the population with the disease currently have access to pulmonary rehabilitation.

NIH Says Tai Chi Treats High Blood Pressure
BREATHING, ACHES, BLOOD PRESSURE: ...participants observed a "big increase in breathing capacity", a disappearance of backaches and neckaches, those with high blood pressure claimed a drop of 10 to 15 mm Hg systolic at rest, and all participants claimed to have more energy in their daily work. Hawaii Medical Journal - Vol 51 No. 8 August 92
BALANCE: A ten year study on aging through Harvard, Yale and Emory University determined not only that T'ai Chi was superior to more technological balance therapies, but that T'ai Chi reduced the risk of injury by falling by 48%.
Complications from these injuries are the sixth leading cause of death in older Americans, and account for about $10 billion loss per year to the economy. USA Today, May 1996
The beneficial effects of Tai Chi Chuan on blood pressure and lipid profile and anxiety status in a randomized controlled trial.
Source
Institute of Nursing, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan, People's Republic of China.
RESULTS:
After 12-weeks of Tai Chi training, the treatment group showed significant decrease in systolic blood pressure of 15.6 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure 8.8 mm Hg. The serum total cholesterol level decreased 15.2 mg/dL and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased 4.7 mg/dL. By using STAI evaluation, both trait anxiety and state anxiety were decreased.
CONCLUSIONS:
This study shows that under well-designed conditions, Tai Chi exercise training could decrease blood pressure and results in favorable lipid profile changes and improve subjects' anxiety status. Therefore, Tai Chi could be used as an alternative modality in treating patients with mild hypertension, with a promising economic effect.
