MAY IS BIKE MONTH
MAY 2103

Greetings!

Make this the month you start your bicycling lifestyle change.  Bike to Work Day is this Thursday, May 9.  Why not make it your first day of a bike commute? You will be encouraged on your ride by businesses, bike coalitions and advocacy groups with 'energizer stations' along the way as well as other cyclists, many of whom are doing the same as you-giving it a go.

Clay will once again be at Bike To Work Central in Frank Ogawa Plaza performing bike safety checks. Stop by our tent next to the EBBC Bike Valet, say hi to us and get a free water bottle!

After work, head to Old Oakland for the Bike Happy Hour, with beer, music, food and games brought to you by the East Bay Bicycle Coalition.  Stop by their booth and enter the raffle to win this bike:

Enter to Win Tern Link Uno with trolley rack

Don't have a bike yet, but want to join in all the fun this Bike to Work Day? Consider renting a bike for the day at our Jack London Square location. We're offering a BTWD special--pick up your bike Wednesday afternoon, and return Friday morning for only $25.

Still not sure? The East Bay Bicycle Coalition's website has a dedicated section for new cyclists and a program called Bike Buddy.  This is great starting point for those new to bike riding or who haven't been on a bike in a while.

Of course, we'd love to see you in the shop where our friendly and helpful staff will spend the time getting to know you and what you want out of your bicycle experience, and then put you on some bikes to test ride.  Every one of us is dedicated to the same goals: getting more people on bikes more often, generating more smiles all 'round.

Happy BTWD & Happy Trails,

The Ladies Ride
Bay Area Bikes for womenAs a woman (co-) owner of a bike shop and as a bike coalition board member, I feel that I have a responsibility to make the biking world less intimidating and more accessible to women.  I feel that I practice this every day--we carry a large selection of  women-specific bikes, saddles, clothing, and other  accessories in our stores.  More important, everyone on staff strives to make each person that walks in our door feel welcomed and respected.  We will take the time to understand your needs and explain how our bikes and products will meet those needs.

I now feel a duty to 'preach what I practice'.  Starting with this edition, I will dedicate a section of our newsletter to topics that I hope will educate, enlighten or encourage more women to incorporate the bicycle in their daily lives.  Be sure to check out our website; the section "Bike Commute-Me?" on the left side of our homepage has links to many more resources.

But how can I possibly do a bike commute with kids?  These same words  were uttered by Susan, mother of two and environmental planner with the Port of Oakland. Last year she decided to give it a try, so she loaded her kids on the bike and in the bike trailer, dropped them off at preschool and then proceeded to the Oakland International Airport.  The trip through Oakland and Alameda only took 45 minutes and she was surprised at how easy it was.  "It took some planning, but the riding turned out to be the easy part!"

It does take planning, but it also takes the support of your employer or school. Bike to Work Day is the perfect time to encourage your employer to consider what they can do to facilitate more of you to bike to work. From offering Commuter Checks to providing bike parking and shower facilities, businesses in the Bay Area are stepping up. We suggest talking with your HR department and encourage them to check out the resources we have listed in the section "BTWD Resources."
