President's Message

While enjoying the beautiful snow drifting down outside my window this weekend, I was glad to be safely ensconced at home. I know the cold, snow and ice has been a challenge for many of our schools and school children lately. I always worry when we have school, "will the children waiting for the bus have mittens, coats and be warm enough?" or when we don't have school, "will they be supervised and have enough to eat?".

At OASN, our challenges are not as immediate as our students', and yet are just as urgent. As Licensed School Nurses, we need to articulate our value to our administrators, school boards, parents and the community. What kind of "bang for your buck" do you get with a Licensed School Nurse? Why should I pay for a Licensed School Nurse instead of a health aide? These questions can be hard to answer without some preparation. The Board is developing a working document to define the roles of different levels of health care provided in schools. It will clearly articulate what Licensed School Nurses can do for schools and school children.

OASN has also spearheaded an effort to introduce legislation mandating epinephrine auto-injectors in schools. Virginia's law mandating this has already saved the lives of two children. Much work has been done by the board to research and craft this proposal, which, hopefully, will be introduced soon to the Ohio legislature.

Finally, I encourage all of you to come to the OASN Conference in Cleveland April 19-21. The agenda looks interesting and thought provoking and it's a great time to network with school nurses from across the state. I know it is hard to get out of our buildings sometimes, so if you can't come on Friday, please join us on Saturday and Sunday! Hope to see you there!

SEEKING OASN VICE-PRESIDENT

Nominations are currently being accepted for our next OASN Vice-president for 2013-2015.  Nominees must meet all eligibility requirements for active membership in OASN and be able to attend all meetings of the Board of Directors.  Most importantly, the Vice-president serves as the chair of the Program and Resources Committee whose primary responsibility is planning the annual OASN conference.  Conference planning meetings occur regularly throughout the year in order to secure the site, arrange for speakers and CNE's, acquire corporate and organizational sponsors, prepare printed materials, and manage budgeting and registrations.  While this may sound overwhelming, remember that the volunteers for the conference planning committee have traditionally been extremely committed, hard-working, professional, and creative...and have lots of fun.   Interested persons should submit a letter of intent and resume or CV to presidentelect@oasn.org by February 25.  A digital photo will also be needed for the ballot.

Call for OASN VP Nomination

The OASN Executive Board is publishing a call for nominations for the position of Vice President. The Vice President is a member of the Executive Board and serves a two year term. The Vice President serves as the chair of the Program and Resources Committee and would preside in the absence of the President and President-elect. Please send a CV or resume and a letter of intent by March 8, 2013 to Mary Massey at marymassey211@gmail.com.

Congratulations!

On February 18th, 2013, one of our own OASN members, Ann Cipriani, Health Services Coordinator for Toledo Public Schools, received the Children's Hunger Alliance Breakfast Program of the Year Award. Ann was instrumental in increasing the breakfast participation in Toledo Public Schools by implementing a "Grab and Go" breakfast program. As we all know, children who eat a healthy breakfast are better learners. Way to go, Ann, for helping the children in Toledo to be healthy, better learners!!

Treasurer's Report
by Joan Keith, Treasurer

Welcome to Treasurer Elect Linda Wyman of the central Ohio area who will assume treasurer duties this spring following the Annual Membership Meeting which is held during the Annual Conference. Linda is a full time licensed school nurse employed by Columbus City Schools.   Linda comes to the position with past experience as COASN's treasurer.

As the treasurer for the past 5 years, I have learned a great deal about our organization as well as formed new friendships. School Nursing can be an isolated setting for many of us so networking with our board of directors and with school nurses throughout Ohio has enhanced my practice.   I encourage you to get involved on the state and local levels in your profession!

OASN's IRS Federal Tax Filing Form 990 is now available for review upon request.

NASN News

On Tuesday, January 29, 2013, NASN Board Members participated in more than 120 meetings with Congressional offices in Washington, DC, to discuss NASN's annual legislative priorities and raise their voice on behalf of children across the country. The opportunity allowed school nurses to highlight the health status of children in their state and local school districts and educate policymakers about the value-added role of school nurses in ensuring children have a healthy, safe and successful future.

NASN Board Members left the nation's capital empowered to share their stories at home. Building and strengthening relationships with local decision makers, stakeholders and community members is essential. School nurses must continue to make the case to decision makers that investing in critical student health services will create a long-term path for a healthier and more economically sound future for all of our nation's children.

Kathleen Sebelius:  Bring Mental Illness Out of the Shadows  Fifty years ago, President John Kennedy shattered the national silence when he delivered a message to Congress  calling for a bold new community-based approach to mental illness that emphasized prevention, treatment, education, and recovery.  The vast majority of Americans with a mental health condition are not violent; but in some instances of mental illness can develop into crisis situations if left untreated. More often than not, those with mental health conditions direct violent acts at themselves. Tragically, there are more than 38,000 suicides in America each year...   Ohio Department of Health

School Nursing Program

Education Galore!

The Ohio Department of Health has expanded its educational offerings this year. There are several new opportunities that will either target Ohio School Nurses specifically or have information School Nurses will find helpful. Each of these trainings provides opportunity for you to earn nursing continuing education contact hours. Information about the upcoming trainings is below:

  • Regional Head Start Nurse Conferences- The ODH School Nursing program has developed a relationship with Ohio Head Start programs in the last year as we now provide the nurses that work in those programs with access to ImpactSIIS. We found that nurses in this setting are interested in training opportunities tailored for them. As a result, the ODH School Nursing program will be offering three ˝ day Head Start Nurse Conferences in conjunction with the Regional School Nurse conferences. All nurses working with the early childhood population are invited to come. Space is limited and Head Start Nurses have priority. More information about the conferences may be found at http://www.odh.ohio.gov/~/media/ODH/ASSETS/Files/chss/school%20nursing/2013%20RSN%20HEAD%20START%20CONF%20(2).ashx
  • Regional School Nurse Conferences- Back by popular demand, these annual conferences will be held at three locations around the state. Registration is currently open for this year's conferences. Information about these conferences may be found at http://www.odh.ohio.gov/~/media/ODH/ASSETS/Files/chss/school%20nursing/RSNI%20REGISTRATION%20SCHOOL%20NURSE%20CONF%20TO%20PRINT%20120412.ashx
  • Public Health Nurses: Successful Partnerships with Ohio Schools- Also by request, this is a new series of monthly webcasts targeting PHNs that work in the school setting. These 1-hour webcasts will each cover one topic related to healthcare services provided in Ohio schools. The first webcast in January was titled, "What is School Nursing?" This series debut was well-attended and received high ratings from those taking the training. Future webcasts will be on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 2-3 pm. While PHNs working in schools are the target audience, all nurses working in Ohio schools are invited to attend. More information about the webcasts may be found at http://www.odh.ohio.gov/~/media/ODH/ASSETS/Files/chss/school%20nursing/LIVE%20PHN%20Successful%20Partnerships%20with%20Ohio%20Schools%20Save-the-Date%20Flyer%20Jan-March%202013%20(5).ashx
  • Archived: Public Health Nurses: Successful Partnerships with Ohio Schools- The webcasts described above will be archived and available for viewing at your convenience through OhioTRAIN. Allow about one month after the live webcast for the archived version to be available. Contact hours will be available for that, too. Information will be available at http://www.odh.ohio.gov/odhprograms/chss/schnurs/conf.aspx
  • Summer Conferences: Public Health Nurses: Successful Partnerships with Ohio Schools-In addition to the monthly webcasts, PHNs requested an opportunity for a face-to-face conference. We will be offering two regional conferences in June-one at the Mansfield-Ontario-Richland Health Department on June 14 and another at Public Health Dayton-Montgomery County on June 18. Details for conference registration will be posted on the ODH School Nursing Program website (http://www.odh.ohio.gov/odhprograms/chss/schnurs/schnurs1.aspx ) under "Conferences and Trainings."
  • Human Trafficking- The Governor's Office has an initiative to reduce human trafficking in the State of Ohio. Ohio School Nurses have been identified by the Governor's initiative as people on the front lines, as many of you have students in your schools are being trafficked. The ODH School Nursing program is working with the ODH Domestic Violence program to bring you a 1-day training about this topic on June 25 in Reynoldsburg. Registration information will be available on the website above when it is open on OhioTRAIN.
  • ImpactSIIS A-Z- Ohio School Nurses will have the ability to upload information into the ImpactSIIS database. To learn how to do that, as well as about the other upgrades to ImpactSIIS, please take the online training. This training is for both new and experienced ImpactSIIS users. Information about this training is available at http://www.odh.ohio.gov/~/media/ODH/ASSETS/Files/chss/school%20nursing/Registration%20Notification%20for%20OhioTRAIN%20ImpactSIIS%20A-Z.ashx
  • Vision & Hearing Screening- Additional online trainings regarding vision and hearing screening are available online at http://www.odh.ohio.gov/odhprograms/cfhs/hvscr/OhioTrain%20Trainings.aspx
  • Medication Administration: Training for School Personnel- This online train-the-trainer course is still available through OhioTRAIN. Information about this training is available at http://www.odh.ohio.gov/odhprograms/chss/schnurs/conf.aspx

Additional trainings are under development. If you have particular ideas for training topics for licensed nurses, please feel free to share them with the ODH School Nursing program staff. While it might take a while to see those requests filled, the staff is always looking for ways to help you be more successful in your professional practice. Please feel free to contact the staff below with any questions or suggestions:

Congratulations School Nurse of the Year 2013

Maureen Mullen Knowles

Toledo Ohio nurse, Maureen Mullen Knowles, is awarded the '2013 School Nurse of the Year' by the Ohio Association of School Nurses (OASN). This prestigious award is bestowed to the nurse that has demonstrated professionalism, shown exceptional implementation of the Standards of Nursing Practice, collaborates with students to provide Quality of Nursing Practice and partners with staff and parents in providing the best outcomes for students and staff with medical concerns and issues.

Maureen claims the Capstone of her school nursing career occurred when she became an integral part of a planning committee within in her school district in developing a scholarship competition program.  This program focused on enveloping wellness and community involvement of high school student teams whom were challenged to redesign an elementary lunch program. With Maureen's' insight, leadership, advice and commitment a pilot program was implemented. This program provided education programs for students and parents regarding nutrition, exercise and healthy living and lifestyles. Due to the overwhelming success of this program; in 2009-2010, another competition program was brought to the forefront, and was further supported by First Lady Strickland and her commitment to our Ohio's obesity prevention initiative.

The School Nurse of the Year award is conferred to a school nurse within the state of Ohio and reflects their commitment and diligence to school nursing. The selected nurse is involved with national and state wide affiliations, embraces and integrates research and best practice findings into their nursing practice daily and holds high education degrees and certifications.

OASN is proud to award Maureen Knowles as the 2013 School Nurse of the Year. Maureen received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of North Dakota, her Masters of Education from the University of Toledo, and Maureen attained her National School Nurse Certification in 2005. She is currently a school nurse within the Toledo Public School district, where she has been employed since 2000. She has also shared her nursing arts at the National Youth Sports program in Toledo, Ohio, and The Toledo Hospital/Toledo Children's Hospital, Toledo Ohio, Albert B. Chandler Medical Center, Lexington Kentucky and St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo North Dakota.

Congratulations to Maureen for this distinguished award. Maureen will be recognized amongst her colleagues at the 40th annual OASN Conference April 18-21, 2013 in Cleveland Ohio.

Dear School Nurse Colleagues,

I hope you are all staying warm and healthy during our cold Ohio winter.

Please be alert to an email invite for our spring meeting & program to be held on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at NEOMED (Northeast Ohio Medical University) in Portage County.

Our program will focus on diabetes, including issues related to children with diabetes in the school setting, management recommendations and interventions that impact the child with diabetes, and a discussion of current ADA recommendations and intervention guidelines.

We are honored to have Dianne Weisner, MSN, APRN, CPNP, CNS, CDE as our program speaker. Dianne has a wealth of knowledge to share with us. Dianne's presentation will additionally allow for

"hands on" demonstration of the newest diabetic management technology.

I have been honored to be your NEOASN president this year. As I prepare to leave office, I extend my sincere gratitude to our hard working board members: Lisa Mason, Past President; Kim Stanislo, President Elect; Lori Hogue, Vice President; Shelly Mountjoy, Secretary; Laurie Celik, Treasurer; Dawn Delmoro, Membership; Pat Forrai-Guntner, OASN Representative; Susan Inscore, Newsletter; and Chrissy Killey, PR.

As Ghandi stated, "Be the change you want to see." Our organization is only as strong as its membership. In order for our organization to move forward, I am asking each of you to "be the change" by becoming more directly involved in NEOASN. Please consider taking over one of our vacant board positions. We currently have openings for President -Elect, OASN Representative, Secretary, Membership, and Newsletter Chair.

School Nursing is changing before our eyes and we must take control of these changes before they take the control from us! Please contact me or any of our current board members to discuss our open positions and how you can keep our organization strong and alive. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your President.

Sincerely,

Maureen Barrett RN, BSN, M.Ed, NCSN

SunWise

Last year, over 12,000 students learned about sun safety and UV radiation by submitting posters to the SunWise with SHADE poster contest. We are looking forward to another great contest this year and invite your students to participate for the chance to win a shade structure for their school and a family trip to Disney World. Poster submissions are due April 1, 2013
The contest is organized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency SunWise program and the SHADE Foundation of America to teach children how to protect their skin and eyes from overexposure to the sun. Please join us in spreading the word about this contest and raising awareness of the importance of sun safety. More information is available at
.

Please feel free to contact me anytime regarding the poster contest or the SunWise program. Thank you in advance for your efforts to educate children about UV radiation and skin cancer prevention.
