Remember: Your Amazon.com Purchases Can Support ECC BSA
As if you needed another excuse to shop at Amazon.com.
Now every purchase you make from the Earth's biggest online store can support the charity of your choice, including Scouting. Through its new AmazonSmile program, Amazon will donate 0.5 percent of the price of your eligible purchase to the 501(c)(3) public charitable organization of your choice. Sure, half a percent isn't much and won't replace your Friends of Scouting contributions that help Scouting function in your community.
But it adds up, costs you nothing and is a great additional way to support Scouting.
The one-time setup takes just a couple of seconds (instructions below), and you get the same prices, products and service you're used to when shopping at Amazon. It doesn't cost you any extra; the only difference is now you're helping Scouting every time you buy.

Dispelling nine myths about lightning safety
There's no safe place outside in a lightning storm. Your best bet's to get inside ASAP. Of course, Scouting adventures take us deep into the outdoors, meaning sometimes there's no "inside" to escape to. In honor of Lightning Safety Awareness Week - June 22-28, 2014 - here are some ways to keep Scouts safe from deadly lightning strikes all year long.

Brothers Earn Every One of the 135 BSA Sanctioned Merit Badges
Two brothers in Virginia have already accomplished at the ages of 11 and 13 what most boys will never do. The pair, Sean and Eric Grapin, have each earned all 135 of the merit badges sanctioned by the Boy Scouts of America. The brothers, both members of Troop 345 in Vienna, Va., were inspired to complete the Herculean task after seeing a poster in a local Boy Scout shop, according to their dad, Mark Grapin, a volunteer adult leader with the Boy Scouts.

Multicultural STEM Outreach Program Celebrates Award Presentations
There were smiles all around for these 21 proud scouts along with their leaders: Multicultural Outreach Director Gwangi Shipp (top left) and Curtis Hendrix, ECO Lodge Program Director (top right). For the past 4 months, these Scouts participated in our after school program at the Boys & Girls Clubs within Pitt County. As you know, this is a scouting program with the emphasis of teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) along with the traditional Cub Scout skills. The Scouts have completed the Science NOVA portion, which is the first phase of the STEM Program by studying Wildlife Conservation and earning the Wildlife Conservation Pin. They have also earned their Cub Scout Bobcat Badge. During this time, the Scouts learned about and had hands on experience with animal tracking, the importance of the food chain, and creating their own ecosystem. On Thursday June 12, 2014 at Pitt Community College an awards reception was held to recognize our Scouts' achievements in completing this part of the STEM Program. We are proud of their accomplishments!

Pack 99 Visits "A Time For Science"
Cub Scout Pack 99 took its first Summertime Activity trip of 2014 to Grifton North Carolina's "A Time For Science" on Saturday June 14th. The Scouts participated in a program from the staff on Eastern Carolina's invasive bugs and planted a pollinator garden that will help attract Native pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
During their program time Scouts learned about "Bug Benefits," "Insects on the Move," "Troublemaker Insects" and "How People Can Make a Difference" in which they learned about two Citizen Science programs they can participate in this summer.

Swimming merit badge revised in time for summer camp
Swimming merit badge, that Eagle-required summer camp staple, has been upgraded and revised just in time for the 2014 summer camp season. The new requirements focus more on teaching Scouts correct stroke mechanics while continuing to emphasize basic water skills. Previous requirements like snorkeling, competitive swimming and CPR (which Scouts learn more fully in other merit badges anyway) have been removed. With the new requirements, the goal is to teach Scouts to swim with greater ease and efficiency, as well as keep them safe in and around the water.
Scouts may use either the old or new requirements in 2014 - it's their choice. On Jan. 1, 2015, they'll become official, and only Scouts who have already started working with the old requirements may use the old ones. Full Article

Eight ingredients that make up a successful Scouting leader
Whether you're a Scoutmaster, a den leader or a crew advisor, this list from a April 1957 issue of Scouting magazine, still proves enlightening today...
- Does a boy get the right start in our troop?
- Do I make full use of parents?
- Do I make full use of the patrol system?
- Are the boys advancing?
- Citizenship and service: Have we visited a patriotic shrine and discussed the deeds of those who made America great? Do we have a regular program of service projects that gives our boys a sense of being participating citizens?
- Uniforming: Most boys want a uniform when they join. Do we nurture this first desire?
- Hiking and camping: Hikes and camping are designed to teach Scouting skills on the learning-by-doing plan and to prepare boys to enjoy themselves in the out-of-doors. Do the boys get these opportunities?
- Home, church and school: Am I helping my boys sense the importance of their homes and of good citizenship in the home? Have we discussed religious awards in the patrol leaders' council? Do I teach my boys that fulfilling school duties is basic preparation for life as a citizen of our nation?

National Youth Leadership Training 2014 at Camp Sam Hatcher
National Youth Leadership Training Scouts recently augmented the staff of Wood Badge S7-426-14 and provided instruction to the students in the course. Scoutmasters attending Wood Badge saw first hand how NYLT can change a Scout's life. Mr. Wayne Brock had the pleasure of having one of his recent sessions here in ECC opened by an NYLT Scout. Give your Scouts the tools and skills that will enable them to take charge. NYLT was "sold out" by April 1st last year and a waiting list was started. Current registrations are on pace to "sell out" early again. Save your Scout's place by completing the registration form with payment and sending it in to East Carolina Council.
DATES: 1st weekend: July 25-27, 2014 2nd weekend: August 1-3, 2014
This Course is open to Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Venturers. Boy Scouts must be 13 years old and have achieved the rank of First Class. All Scouts must have Scoutmaster or Crew Adviser permission.
