NEW PROFESSIONAL STAFF ASSIGNMENTS 

 

As we settle into a new year there are many changes taking place in our council. Due to budget reductions we will have two less field staff than in the past. The following changes are being made effective January 7 to your professional staff.     

 

SATURDAYS SCOUT SHOP OPEN TO BE REDUCED 

 

Store Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm, 

(January & February; September & October only: Saturdays 9:00am-1:00pm)

Tony Spagnoli, New Bern, NC has been hired as the Senior District Executive for the Southern Service Area. Prior to being hired by East Carolina Council, he was employed by the Los Angeles, CA council for three years where his responsibilities included membership development, program and family enrollment for a large district in western L.A. Spagnoli has an undergraduate degree in communications and masters degree in urban planning. He is an Eagle Scout and has completed Wood Badge.  Married, he will continue to live in New Bern and work with John Forehand to serve the units and district committee in the Southern Service Area.

University of Scouting - Feb. 16, 2013 - Course Catalog
8am-4:30pm Sat. Feb.16, Pitt Community College,Greenville
The catalog lists 74 different training courses for Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Venturing, District Committee, General Studies and Youth. Gain basic "how-to" knowledge or credits towards an advanced degree in Scouting.   
The response will be great, Pre-registration is highly recommended!     
Pre-registration fee ($15) includes all course materials, lunch, commemorative patch, and printed personalized schedule.     Online registration closes Monday Feb. 4 @ midnight.

Update the 2009 Wilderness First Aid Curriculum
The 2009 edition of the "Wilderness First Aid Curriculum & Doctrine Guidelines", is being updated, and comments/suggestions offered by the public will be considered until Feb. 1. Please email your input.

New "Journey To Excellence" materials have been uploaded to the JTE section of the Scouting.org website, including information for 2012 JTE year-end and new 2013 JTE goal-planning tools for councils and districts.

National Youth Leadership Training 2013

Registration is now open. The course will be held over the weekends of July 26 - 28, 2013 and August 2 - 4, 2013 and is open to Boy Scouts ages 13 - 17 who have achieved the rank of First Class, Venture Scouts and Sea Scouts to the age of 21.

 

 DISTRICT NEWS

Seven Scouts participated in our Camp Boddie Field Trip and earned their Ultimate Belt Loop! It was a great, fun filled day. The Scouts worked hard and played hard.

 

On Saturday, December 8th Pack 200 scouts and leaders rode a full-size flat bed truck they had decorated with the theme: "Honoring Our Military". Scout families also collected and donated more than 6 full boxes of personal goods and other useful items to the NC PACKS 4 PATRIOTS program.

The Boy Scouts of America annually celebrates its founding on February 8, 1910, and designates the Sunday that falls before February 8 as Scout Sunday. These observances offer an opportunity for congregations to honor Scouts and Scouters, as well as to learn more themselves about the value of Scouting as a youth program. Approximately 50 percent of all Scouting units are chartered to religious groups. Additional Resources

SCOUTING SPOTLIGHT
 "Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout?"
The National Geographic Channel will air this Reality Show this Spring (no exact date yet).  "Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout?" is the brainchild of Thom Beers, producer of such hit action-reality series as "Deadliest Catch" and "Ice Road Truckers;" and himself a one-time Boy Scout.    Go Behind the Scenes.

The BSA has formed a partnership with professional bass angler Tom Redington to help teach Scouts about the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) aspects of the outdoors and fishing and to encourage young people to become active in the outdoors.
 BSA Offers Victim Assistance Support Through ScoutHelp
The Boy Scouts of America is providing support and care to adults who have been affected by sexual abuse years ago, when they were Scouts. The National Council has established ScoutHelp, a help line accessed by a toll-free number (855-295-1531) or sending an email  scouthelp@scouting.org
