 Summer 2012
Dr. Sferra
Happy 4th of July!
Did you know that a standard American diet without exercise could have a person lose 50% of muscle and double their body fat from age 20 - 60!
This is not simply aging!  Its a lifestyle that greatly contributes to chronic degenerative disease in our country. Having a healthy body is more than just knowing your ideal weight or your BMI (Body Mass Index).  A more valuable number to know is your Body Composition, the relationship between your lean muscle tissue versus your body fat.  A healthy Body Composition requires adherence of healthy habits within the NMR Triad of Health.  (The NMR Triad of Health looks at a patients overall health picture including their Nutritional habits, their Mental outlook and their Reconditioning exercises.)  Adherence to these healthy lifestyle habits is the most important thing one can do for themselves to reduce the risk factors for chronic disease (i.e. high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity).
Body Composition can be tested by several different methods with some being more accurate than others.  Infrared technologies are used when we do screenings outside our office.  Within our clinic, we use Electronic Impedance with sophisticated software.
An alternate, but less valuable predictor is your BMI.  This formula will at least let you know if you are within an ideal weight, but unfortunately does not tell us how that weight is distributed (i.e. fat vs. muscle).
To calculate your BMI, use this formula:

___________  x  703   ÷ ______________  ÷  ______________  =  BMI

(weight in lbs)                (height in inches)   (height in inches)

A BMI of over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30..obese! But remember that this does not tell you if the tissue is unhealthy fat or healthy muscle, so know your Body Composition number.  Ideal Body Fat for men is between 10-18% and between 18-25% for women.  In my opinion, it is just as important to know and optimize one's Body Composition as it is with the many conventional blood test markers which we have come to view as important to our health.

Come in and learn how NMR can help you support a healthy lifestyle and obtain better health, better life!

Nutritional habits

When you eat certain foods together
they help the body absorb
even more of their nutrients!
Tomatoes have many health benefits!  They contain the anti-oxidant, Lycopene, which gives it its bright red color.  Lycopene can help the body fight cancerous cells from forming.  Since your body does not naturally produce Lycopene, add food sources such as the tomato, watermelon and pink grapefruit to your diet.  In order for your body to absorb this, it needs healthy fat.
Eat tomatoes with the heart healthy fat found in avocados or olive oil and you will increase your body's absorption of Lycopene.

Guacamole

From NMR's kitchen to yours.

  Guacamole

2 ripe avocados, diced          Juice from 1 Lime
1 tomato, diced                     Dash of Red Pepper
                1 Tbs. fresh Cilantro, minced
                Salt to taste

Combine all ingredients and serve with tortilla chips.

Reconditioning exercises

 Postural Relief Exercise

In order to correct an improper posture, repetitive reinforcement is necessary.  Perform this exercise 5 times daily.  Initially you may develop soreness in the lower neck, front of the chest, and between the shoulder blades, if performed correctly.

 Bruggers

Poor Posture                               Step 1                                Step 2

Step 1:

  • Sit comfortably on a chair, back straight, chest up, head over the shoulders.
  • Position hands at your sides - palms facing inward.

Step 2:

  • Press your shoulders down as if carrying heavy bags.
  • Open fingers wide and rotate through the upper arm so the shoulders open, pointing your thumbs to the wall behind you.

Release to neutral and repeat 10 times.

Good News!

Patient Testimonial:
"I was walking with a cane when I began treatment, and was initially treated with pain-reduction techniques:  electric stimulation, massage therapy, heat and/or ice therapy, and light stretching.  As the pain diminished, the program progressed to more range of motion exercises, and finally to full weight training to strengthen and stabilize my back and core."
