Abdominal Obesity
a.k.a. belly fat, love handles, muffin top, spare tire, beer belly, pot belly....
Is your waistline expanding?  
Having a healthy body is more than just about your body's weight, but carrying extra weight around your abdominal area can further increase your risk of serious health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke and certain cancers.  When there is increased abdominal fat, or visceral fat, it not only lies just under the skins surface but also surrounds your vital organs which causes the serious health problems!

Your waist-hip ratio can let you know if you are at an increased risk for serious health conditions.  
Take your waist measurement (over your belly button) and divide it by your hip measurement (over widest part of the hips).

Ideal Waist to Hip Ration 

Men should be less than .90

Women should be less than .75

 

Toning and strengthening your abdominal muscles are great exercises, but spot exercising will not reduce your abdominal fat.  A healthy lifestyle with routine exercise and daily physical activity will help fight obesity.  To lose the weight, the calories you burn must surpass the calories you consume.

Layer these fruits and serve as a side dish or as a dessert.   

Purple Grapes ~ helps treat constipation, indigestion, fatigue and the
                           prevention of cataracts.
Blueberrieshigh in antioxidants & acts as an anti-inflammatory
Kiwi slices ~ High in Vitamin C, Vitamin E, potassium & fiber.
Pineapple slices Contains Bromelain enzymes that can aid in                                         digestion, healing & inflammation. High in Vitamin C,                               potassium, fiber and manganese.   
Cantaloupe slices
High fiber, low calorie fruit that will help curb your hunger!  Rich in potassium, Vitamin A & C and beta carotene which helps protect against cell damage.  Its a great antioxidant & helps boost your immune system.
Strawberry slices ~ high in Vitamin C & disease fighting

Educating our patients and having them understand their treatment plan enables us to help you permanently improve your health status.  If a patient doesn't understand the importance of why they are doing something, they will not be motivated to stick with the program.  Motivation is a powerful tool in achieving your goals!

Reconditioning exercises
Although spot exercising alone will not reduce belly fat,  
go ahead and do these targeted abdominal crunches because:
  • muscles burn more calories
  • it strengthens your core & supports your back
  • it helps improve your posture and
  • once the belly fat is reduced, your beautifully toned abs will be revealed!

 Proper form is important:
  • Chin should be tucked in fist distance staying in alignment with your spine.
  • Feet should be slightly wider than hip distance.
  • Arms crossed at chest NOT behind your head.
  • Lift upper body crunching ribs towards the hips.
  • Lift shoulder blades off the floor.
  • Slowly lower to the floor pulling ribs away from hips.
  • Repeat for 3 sets of 10.
  • STOP if you experience any neck pain or strain!
