Sferra-Karen

Dr. Sferra welcomes Karen Lin, Licensed Acupuncturist, to NMR!

Acupuncture Now Available at NMR!

Acupuncture, a component of traditional Chinese medicine that originated over 5000 years ago, is now being offered as a holistic approach to pain management at Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation!  Acupuncture can provide drug free pain relief for people with chronic pain and suffering by encouraging the body to promote natural healing.  The needling of acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release pain-relieving chemicals (endorphins & serotonin) and hormones in the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These chemicals are the body's natural painkillers.  The body produces them to influence its own internal regulating system and healing abilities to fight disease and maintain a healthy physical and emotional state.

Acupuncture is drug-free pain management for our patients to help them progress along more quickly in their rehabilitation program.  Physical rehabilitation plays a critical part of most patients care at NMR.  Joint, muscle and spinal problems demand stability, strength and conditioning if one is not only to feel better but also to restore function and prevent similar or worse problems in the future.  Incorporating acupuncture into a rehabilitation program can help people with chronic pain or suffering from things such as:

      • Headaches & Migraines
      • Back, Neck & Joint Pain
      • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
      • Fibromyalgia
      • Myofascial Pain
      • Trigeminal Neuralgia
      • Menstrual Cramps
      • Osteoarthritis
      • Sciatica
      • Tennis Elbow

Acupuncture compliments the services provided at NMR to help patients with their pain management and move toward not only feeling better, but actually being better and stronger!

A complimentary half hour consultation is being offered
to new patients to see how acupuncture
or the other services provided at NMR may benefit them.
Just call before January 31, 2013 and mention this newsletter!

Mental outlook
NMRTriangles
"Laughter is one of the best medicines around for relieving stress and for creating a more healthy spirit.  And, one of the greatest aspects is that it is totally free and can be done by anyone. "
~ Byron Pulsifer

Stress...it may be the culprit to many of your health issues.  It can effect your body, your mood and your behavior.  Your body may suffer from headaches or an upset stomach, your mood may display signs of depression or irritability and your behavior may also change.  For example, you may over-eat or under-eat during times of stress.

Untempered stress can lead to many health concerns such as high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity.  Learning to recognize stress symptoms and learning techniques to temper your stress will help.

Massage Therapy is just one way to ease away stress.  Massage therapy aids in the relief of muscle spasms, improve circulation and  mobility and helps reduce physical and mental stress.

NMR's Spa Massage is designed to melt accumulated tension from the body and release accumulated stress from the mind.
Reconditioning exercises

Relaxation position - "Savahsanna"

It's important that the body be placed in a neutral position.

  • Lie on your back on a firm surface.  Relax both legs, and allow the feet to turn out equally and soften the lower back.
  • Then relax the arms on the floor and turn them outward resting the backs of the hands on the floor allowing the fingers to naturally curl inward.
  • Make sure the shoulder blades are resting evenly on the floor.
  • Relax the neck and position the head so your ears are equidistant to the shoulders.
  • In addition to quieting the body, it is also important to pacify the sense organs.  Soften the root of the tongue, the wings of the nose, the channels of the inner ears, and the skin of the forehead, especially around the bridge of the nose between the eyebrows.
  • Let the eyes sink to the back of the head.
  • Stay in this pose for 5 minutes using the following breathing awareness.

Inhale and notice the breath entering and exiting your body.  Notice the full dimensionality of your breath as it radiates out in all directions, the fullness in the lungs as the breath fills them and how they gently collapse as the breath flows out.  Notice the internal sensations and how the belly and ribs move with the breath.  You are not trying to control or change the breath, however, as you become more aware of your breath, you may notice the quality of your breath change.

MindBodyExercise
A study in "Neuroreport" found that Breath Awareness Meditation is associated with greater thickness of "grey matter" in the cortex of the brain.  It suggests that meditation can prevent age related cortical loss.  Breath Awareness Meditation is associated with improved attention, memory, awareness, thought, language and consciousness.
