The Medill Justice Project wins four Peter Lisagor Awards
The Chicago Headline Club, one of the largest chapters of the national Society of Professional Journalists, awarded The Medill Justice Project four Peter Lisagor Awards for Exemplary Journalism. In the past five years, MJP has won nine Lisagor awards and been named a finalist for 18. This year, we were recognized for our various investigations of wrongful convictions and other criminal justice matters. Since 2012, MJP has won or been named a finalist for over 55 journalism awards in local and national competitions open to both students and professionals. The Chicago Headline Club established the Lisagor awards in 1977 to inspire Chicago-area journalists to follow the example of Peter Lisagor, a former Washington bureau chief for the Chicago Daily News, and to recognize superior contributions to journalism. The awards used to be limited to the best professional journalists based in Chicago and northwest Indiana, but this year the region expanded to include the full state of Illinois in addition to parts of Indiana.
